- Hello UA-cam friends!
Today I get to show off a brand spanking new Fender Player Series Jazzmaster! (more like Jazzblaster)
This one is in a beautiful # tone sunburst with a HH configuration, and I love it!
The specs are readily available, but in case you don't know them I quickly go through them in the introduction of the video.
When searching for demo's of this guitar, I noticed that none of them really showed any tones that I would look for if I were in the market for a new guitar coming from a grunge/alternative perspective, so I made my own demo!
My thoughts in a nutshell: Great guitar! These guitars are a lot of bang for your buck, and after a setup (as most guitars should have upon purchase) plays amazingly. I love the satin finished neck, its a very comfortable shape and plays fast! I made the guitar a new nut and shielded the cavities, which while in a perfect world I wouldn't have to do, but is honestly something I do with all my guitars anyway so wasn't off putting for me. I highly recommend this guitar for any genre, but it really fits the bill if you're looking for a versatile jazzblaster! 9/10
As always, I don't own all of the music played for demo purposes, so all rights go to their respective owners!
Check out some of the tones in the video (use headphones for best sound). This was recorded using the low normal channel of my AC30C2 mic’d with a GRIT mic and an sm57. Please remember to like, comment and/or subscribe! Thanks everyone for watching and supporting the channel!

Thanks for this review! I’ve been looking to buy this model and your song selection is exactly what I enjoy playing, helped me a lot!
Thank you for playing deftones :0
I discovered this video because I'm thinking about buying this guitar, and you play literally what I would play on it. Thank you, the choice is made =))
@@user-lb9wf2hq1z you’re welcome, enjoy the guitar! 🙂
the clean bridge pickup is beautiful
This guitar gives some really nice Nirvana tones. I want this guitar!
Chair Wood yeah I was surprised how well it handled that stuff actually
@@alexrcowan Why?
I have the same one in white! It’s awesome!!!
@@TRAGUSUCKS i know this is 4 years old... Just i'm about to pull the trigger on a cherry red HH jazzmaster and play everything from math rock to pop punk to heavy groove/stoner fuzz metal and was wondering if because of how well it handled the nirvana sound if you guys think it would be a good decision as i am a Fender guy, not a gibson (not keen on the idea of a snaoped headstock lol) so an SG is out of the running and this is top spot at the moment for me. Anything i should know? Thanks in advance :)
Gotta love Jazzmasters!
Beeswax 153 yep, love me a jazzmaster
Great video, as always man! It sounded great and I liked the song selection. Nicely done!
Thanks Greg, glad you liked it. Was originally going to play a lot more riffs, but also wanted to keep this video relatively short. Ah well, there's always more video's to make!
4:32 Wasn’t expecting Quiet there. Haven’t heard that in ages. Nice review by the way
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the review! And quiet is a ripper track!
It looks like a Jaguar, I don't know why 🤔
Maybe it's the pickguard color
04:32 *EARGASM* wtf that sounds so perfect
Haha they both have extremely similar shapes, also not having those soapbar jazzmaster pickups might also be adding to the confusion. And Thanks man! :D
@@alexrcowan Ohhh. That's it. The pickups. I knew something there was reminding me of a Jag!
The song playing at 04:32 is quiet by the smashing pumpkings of you were wondering
@@ldub9150 Thank You! Although I already knew the song xD
@@alexrcowan Hi! Could you please tell me which one of these two is more suitable for hard rock? Jaguar or the Jazzmaster Player Series? I've also read that the Jaguar has Alnico 3 and the Jazzmaster has Alnico 2. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for the honest review!! Very helpful. The set up you did sounds great. Loved the songs you played. I got a hold of a just a MIM player Jazz body and all the electronics hardware, so wanted to know what they sounded like. Before I finish the build. Hopefully the neck I have will fit. Thanks mate!
Thanks mate, glad you found the review useful! Good luck with the build, hope the end result is a killer axe! 🎸
I love this guitar man. Great demo, exactly my kind of music! Such a dope finish too, I want one but I just got a sunburst mustang, lol.
Jeremy yeah these player series jazzmasters are cool hey! And thanks man! Hahah get yourself a jazzy too!
*Did I heard Grunge?!?*
* *Sniff* *
Song choices are perfect 🔥
Thanks for this detailed review - just what I was looking for, especially about the issues you mentioned at the start
Decent review - soon as I heard the deftones, thought this would suit Siamese Dream era sounds, nice to see you tossed in a Corgan riff!
Gotta love a review that starts off with a Deftones riff
kidpresentable haha love me some deftones!
Pixies tune sounded dope. Nice playing and overall review.
Thanks mate, I appreciate it. Glad you liked the video!
best vdieo on the player series
Thanks mate, wanted to take a different perspective to the normal demo's I've seen
Great video and playing!
Thanks as always Oliver! :)
alexrcowan Np :)
Awesome playing!
Patrik Žarković thanks man! 😁
Try running the big muff with a light drive before it into the dirty channel with the gain down low.
The nut was correct, strings are NOT spaced prefect equal due to the different string widths, nice demo
Eric Filsinger nope they were off by a mile. They felt off, and were measured using a string spacing ruler which compensates for string width as you say, and that only confirmed the incorrect spacing
@@alexrcowan OK strange My Road worn was fine but I ended up selling the neck because I had a USA RI neck from a different guitar
These sound and look great mate!
Cheers John! Didn't play any in the vid but these are also great for Sonic yoof
Penny royal sounds amazing
Beatiful!!!!
GrungeKid thanks mate! She’s a beaut! 😊
which is better: a kurt cobain jaguar or this jazzmaster?
Navanhy Mendieta Perez pretty different guitars despite looks. I don’t think I could say one was necessarily better than the other, especially since they cost very different prices. Perhaps I will do a video doing some tonal comparisons since I’ve already been asked to do this on instagram. I’d say the KC jag does the whole guitar-on-steroids grunge stuff better, whereas the jazzmaster is more of a jack of all trades kind of deal. In the right hands either are a great instrument.
I own the KC jag... it’s great for distortion... cleans are a little iffy. This guitar would be kinda would be worse at distortion but better at cleans. The kc jag is super comfy and I really like it. I have no issues with it.
Another note is the finger board material is different. And scale length.
Darker distortion with the Jazz, overall bright sound with the jag despite humbuckers. Wasn't impressed with the KC Jaguar despite frothing at the mouth for it since I was a kid.
Very helpful video, thanks!
Ay man I’m getting a fender player mustang
Great sampling of the player. Do you think, apart from price, it still retains the functions and features of a more traditional jazzmaster? If I understand correctly, the player series does not have the separate rhythm circuit. Does it still poses the jazzmaster sounds?
I love the new jazzmaster acoustasonic. If like to buy one, but still want an electric jazzmaster. I'm trying to discern if the player will allow me to have both instruments, while saving some $, but still have the jazzmaster sounds.
What amp and settings are you using? Playing sounds great btw
Agreed, the stock pups are very decent.
Hey man, your pickups are sounding like single coils and not humbuckers, any reason for that? It sounds like humbuckers in the other video reviews. NICE choosing on the demo songs btw!!! You gotta love the 90's rock!
What’s the correct pickup height for the Kurt cobain Jaguar? I moved the height on mine and don’t remember how it was when I first bought it. Can you help?
4:32 amazing...
Cool deftones riffs.. drive, change
SWARATAMAN Grunge all time greatest Deftones tracks!
Awesome video man!
Really nice riffs
If it's Deftones approved, then is a great guitar
4:14.....House Of Flies? Deftones?
Jack Tilghman yep, it sure is man!
5:31
Was that Sappy?
yep, the home recording version of sappy
alexrcowan sounds great!
Fender jaguar is the shit, love those guitars
It's a jazzmaster though
Hey Man!!! I hope things are well (I've watched this video about 5 times lol) Just gonna hit you with a few video ideas, i think i remember you saying that you would demo some of your mos-rites and those guitars?, not 100% sure, but that's probably the way to go, also maybe remake your old how to tone videos, i reckon you could get way closer now!! you don't have to, just some suggestions, anyway, Hope things are well, excited to see your next video!!
Hey Joseph! I'm well thanks! Hope you are too! Yeah I really want to remake my old tone videos, you're right I've come leaps and bounds since I've made those so I think I can make some better ones. Unfortunately a mosrite video will be tricky to do now since I've sold mine haha. I've been trying to downsize my collection to necessities and since I hardly used them they had to go :/
haha, cool, thats all good, good idea btw, anyways, looking foward to future videos!!!
Starting the demo with Deftones. Already my kind of review. How's the tuning stability been so far?
@@TobyKBTY This was a great guitar for the earlier Deftones era for sure! I don’t own the guitar anymore, but it was always solid. I’ve very rarely seen a tuning stability issue on a Jazzmaster that couldn’t be fixed!
At some point are you going to be recording some nirvana tones with the harley benton hi flyer?
Unfortunately not, cool story though, I ended up selling the guitar to one of my subscribers on youtube. It can nail the tones though, if that's what you're trying to find out! The thing oozed bleach era goodness
Aww thats a shame
@@alexrcowan What was that Harley Benton called? I just can't find it.
@@metrokett the JA-60 I believe
@@firemarshal2629 The Jazzmaster is JA-60. I just can't find the HB hi flyer. I think they dont make them anymore
Great music taste. That sounds far more expensive than it is.
Thanks mate! Yep it has a lot of bang for buck value!
I bought this model a few months ago and have been plagued by bridge rattling that I havent been able to fix. I've tried teflon tape, next I'll try loctite.
Sometimes the issue with bridge rattling with offsets has to do with neck angle and bridge height. It's common. I added a shim in the neck pocket and raised the bridge. Solved the problem. It helps to think about Jazzmasters and other offsets as being more similar to archtops than to strat or tele type guitars.
Putting fender deluxe pickups into this without rerouting??
Yeah,do video about comparisons KC jag and this jassmaster, here is not actually understandable all stuff. Nevertheless can this jassmaster use for pank and grunge? И видео очень классное!
Personally I would drop in a set of oversized P90’s and use the push pull pot for phase switching. Personally I think it would Grunge even better... just my take on it .
4:16 That was Change by the Deftones right?
AntiZer0 yep, you’re correct!
What is the song at 4:50 mins please help me
I may be getting the KC Jaguar, Is there any problems with it?
Nah man the KC Jags are excellent! Love mine to death
Is the coil split only for the bridge pickup or does it split the neck too?
It splits the neck too
🔥🔥🔥
This or the classic player?
caribOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Great tune!
Sounds amazing......I want one now
Bro i just got this guitar and it’s noisy hope the shielding works
Did it work dude?
Does it stays in tune?
would you ever do a telecaster grunge tones video?
If people wanna see it then yeah!
Which is better Telecaster player with humbucker or JazzMaster player?
Couldn't say man, I haven't played the tele player. The Jazzy is sweet though!
You should check the 2018 player jaguar series, i thought i would be dissapointed because i don't like what fender has been doing recently, but it was actually a perfect mix of my *likes* for jaguar, a single coil on the neck and a humbucker on the bridge, it's like a combination of my favorite jaguar players. I saw a lot of people on instagram very angry because it was a *piece of shit* but it was made for people like me.
basic mario tu-toriales yeah I do like the look/idea of the player jaguar. I feel like these jaguar/jazzmasters are a step in the right direction by offering Guitars that are more versatile. The purists will always hate them but there are more vintage style offerings also being put out by fender so there’s something for everyone
alexrcowan I just got a sansamp classic original from 90s however, it seems to sound like there is not tone and sounds as if on my mustang i turned down the tone knob all the way, is it broken?
Possibly could have a faulty component. Might be worth getting the pedal serviced
Кузьма хорошо сыграл на гитаре.
Sick review
Thanks mate!
How’s the bridge? Any issues there with the saddles moving from playing?
It's solid with the right break angle. I haven't encountered any problems
What is the song at 5:32 seconds .. please help thx 🙏🏼 for
Sappy by Nirvana. Sounds like the home recorded version, which is on Outcesticide.
subscribe because shut up and drive was the first song you played !
Caius Madison haha that’s been my favourite tune recently!
Deftonessss mmmmm
I'm currently split over a Fender Player Jaguar or a Player Jazzmaster. I know traditional Jaguars are much less versatile than Jazzmasters, but with that HS setup the Player ones have now, you think they could be just as versatile as a Jazzmaster? It's just that Jaguars have that 24" scale over a Jazzmaster's 25.5" scale, and I'm a dude with smaller hands so a Jaguar would be more comfortable for me. But at the same time, I don't want to sacrifice playability just for versatility. I primarily play Indie/Garage Rock/Grunge but also delve into some 70s-80s Metal. I'm pretty sure the Jazzmaster could pull off the latter with it's HH setup, but I really don't know about the Player Jaguar. Your input on this would be really appreciated, thanks.
Josh Falejczyk Hi Josh. I think first and foremost, the playability has to be a priority. If shortscales are more comfortable for you then for sure go for the jag. If the HH setup is better for your play styles, you can always replace the neck pickup with a humbucker if that proves to be a necessity. Jag single coil neck pickups are quite nice though, and could work well for your style of music. If you go for the jazzmaster and then find it difficult to play I think that would be a bigger problem than swapping a pickup on a jag. However if you can you should try both at a shop, this is the one fail safe way you’ll know for sure which is more your thing!
alexrcowan I actually had to drive out an hour and a half to test out a Jaguar and a Jazzmaster, it was the closest place that had them lol. They unfortunately didn't have either in the Player Series models, but it did give me an idea. And I mean, a 25.5" scale isn't impossible for me to play, I've actually played a cheap Squier Strat up until this point, it's just that it's preferable to play a smaller scale for me. I'm just a broke college kid and so I've been saving up for a while for this, and it won't be a long time until I'll be able to get another guitar, so I'm just really hoping I make the right decision here. What do you think would be pushing the boundaries genre-wise for a HS Jaguar such as the Player Model, could it even pull off a heavy fuzz tone for something like Stoner Metal, or heavy distortion for Death Metal? I'm not sure if you're knowledgeable in those genres and while I really don't play them super often, I might every once in a while. Otherwise, I stick in those genres I listed earlier.
Josh Falejczyk I think you’ll enjoy the jaguar man. You can definitely pull off some Stoner with the jag. With the right amp and pedal setup I think it will take care of everything you want to play and will be comfortable with it’s short scale
alexrcowan I was honestly about to get the Jazzmaster before this but I think you got me sold. Don't get me wrong, J Mascis is my idol, but a Jazzmaster might have to wait for me lol. Oh and one more thing, hate to bother you but I gotta ask, have you had any experience with Mustangs? Fender released this Mustand 90 (a Mustang with P-90 pickups) and it seems pretty versatile and similar to the Jaguar with its 24" scale. Given it's like $200 cheaper as well, do you think it could possibly be a better choice than a Player Jaguar (given my situation and music taste) or no? I'm leaning on the no side but I just would like another opinion.
Josh Falejczyk yep I have plenty of experience with mustangs, I own 3 haha. The p90’s are cool but they will be noisier than Humbuckers. If you dig that shape more than the other offsets maybe check out the duo sonic HS. I think that would be a better fit for you than the mustang 90. I also did a demo video on one of them so you can check that out too
hi can you tell me your pickup heights in mm please? Thanks :)
Igor Takac roughly 1.6mm at the bass and treble side with string depressed at last fret
4:13
I see you, deftones fan.
So is it a strat now?
Do you find palm muting is good on this?
Yep, was super easy! Sorry for the late reply!
@@alexrcowan unfortunately Guitar Center was completely out of stock all over the country and couldn’t give me a time frame on when they’d get another fender? So I left and about an hour later I went back and purchased a Les Paul. I couldn’t resist especially when the wife was cool with it. She has some sweet sweet tones.
Can you tell me the settings to play nirvana on a line 6 iv spider amp but if you can please tell me them with o clocks for example bass at 2 o clock. Thanks
Hi Alex. Awesome video. Just got this guitar as well. I was wondering what song you were playing at 3:48? I know that I've heard it before but I just can't seem to figure it out.
Thanks
On a plain by Nirvana
@@the_snoo_muffin9028 of course haha. Thank you
What's the first song he played
Kantina Be Quiet and Drive (far away) - Deftones
alexrcowan thanks man, judging by that riff I might have just found a new band I love.
Maybe the answer to my question is obvious but I'll make it anyway: Is this guitar better than the Godin SD?
You are like me, just putting the fucking same question in every video hahahahha By the way, I just dont like the Godin shape at all ..maybe is a better guitar..but, for me is very important! Greetings
What song was at 3:03?
Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) by Deftones
alexrcowan thank you!
Fender Jaguar = Nirvana
