2018 Fender Player Series Jazzmaster | Overview and Alternative/Grunge tones

  • Hello UA-cam friends!
    Today I get to show off a brand spanking new Fender Player Series Jazzmaster! (more like Jazzblaster)
    This one is in a beautiful # tone sunburst with a HH configuration, and I love it!
    The specs are readily available, but in case you don't know them I quickly go through them in the introduction of the video.
    When searching for demo's of this guitar, I noticed that none of them really showed any tones that I would look for if I were in the market for a new guitar coming from a grunge/alternative perspective, so I made my own demo!
    My thoughts in a nutshell: Great guitar! These guitars are a lot of bang for your buck, and after a setup (as most guitars should have upon purchase) plays amazingly. I love the satin finished neck, its a very comfortable shape and plays fast! I made the guitar a new nut and shielded the cavities, which while in a perfect world I wouldn't have to do, but is honestly something I do with all my guitars anyway so wasn't off putting for me. I highly recommend this guitar for any genre, but it really fits the bill if you're looking for a versatile jazzblaster! 9/10
    As always, I don't own all of the music played for demo purposes, so all rights go to their respective owners!
    Check out some of the tones in the video (use headphones for best sound). This was recorded using the low normal channel of my AC30C2 mic’d with a GRIT mic and an sm57. Please remember to like, comment and/or subscribe! Thanks everyone for watching and supporting the channel!

      @@TRAGUSUCKS i know this is 4 years old... Just i'm about to pull the trigger on a cherry red HH jazzmaster and play everything from math rock to pop punk to heavy groove/stoner fuzz metal and was wondering if because of how well it handled the nirvana sound if you guys think it would be a good decision as i am a Fender guy, not a gibson (not keen on the idea of a snaoped headstock lol) so an SG is out of the running and this is top spot at the moment for me. Navanhy Mendieta Perez pretty different guitars despite looks. I don’t think I could say one was necessarily better than the other, especially since they cost very different prices. Perhaps I will do a video doing some tonal comparisons since I’ve already been asked to do this on instagram. I’d say the KC jag does the whole guitar-on-steroids grunge stuff better, whereas the jazzmaster is more of a jack of all trades kind of deal. In the right hands either are a great instrument.

      I own the KC jag... it’s great for distortion... cleans are a little iffy. This guitar would be kinda would be worse at distortion but better at cleans. The kc jag is super comfy and I really like it. I have no issues with it.

    Great sampling of the player. Do you think, apart from price, it still retains the functions and features of a more traditional jazzmaster? If I understand correctly, the player series does not have the separate rhythm circuit. Does it still poses the jazzmaster sounds?
    I love the new jazzmaster acoustasonic. If like to buy one, but still want an electric jazzmaster. I'm trying to discern if the player will allow me to have both instruments, while saving some $, but still have the jazzmaster sounds.

    • @kharmajavah
      @kharmajavah 3 роки тому

      Sometimes the issue with bridge rattling with offsets has to do with neck angle and bridge height. It's common. I added a shim in the neck pocket and raised the bridge. Solved the problem. It helps to think about Jazzmasters and other offsets as being more similar to archtops than to strat or tele type guitars.

    I'm currently split over a Fender Player Jaguar or a Player Jazzmaster. I know traditional Jaguars are much less versatile than Jazzmasters, but with that HS setup the Player ones have now, you think they could be just as versatile as a Jazzmaster? It's just that Jaguars have that 24" scale over a Jazzmaster's 25.5" scale, and I'm a dude with smaller hands so a Jaguar would be more comfortable for me. But at the same time, I don't want to sacrifice playability just for versatility. I primarily play Indie/Garage Rock/Grunge but also delve into some 70s-80s Metal. I'm pretty sure the Jazzmaster could pull off the latter with it's HH setup, but I really don't know about the Player Jaguar. Your input on this would be really appreciated, thanks.

    • @alexrcowan
      @alexrcowan  6 років тому +1

      Josh Falejczyk Hi Josh. I think first and foremost, the playability has to be a priority. If shortscales are more comfortable for you then for sure go for the jag. If the HH setup is better for your play styles, you can always replace the neck pickup with a humbucker if that proves to be a necessity. Jag single coil neck pickups are quite nice though, and could work well for your style of music. If you go for the jazzmaster and then find it difficult to play I think that would be a bigger problem than swapping a pickup on a jag. However if you can you should try both at a shop, this is the one fail safe way you’ll know for sure which is more your thing!

    • @MySedimentsExactly
      @MySedimentsExactly 6 років тому

      alexrcowan I actually had to drive out an hour and a half to test out a Jaguar and a Jazzmaster, it was the closest place that had them lol. They unfortunately didn't have either in the Player Series models, but it did give me an idea. And I mean, a 25.5" scale isn't impossible for me to play, I've actually played a cheap Squier Strat up until this point, it's just that it's preferable to play a smaller scale for me. I'm just a broke college kid and so I've been saving up for a while for this, and it won't be a long time until I'll be able to get another guitar, so I'm just really hoping I make the right decision here. What do you think would be pushing the boundaries genre-wise for a HS Jaguar such as the Player Model, could it even pull off a heavy fuzz tone for something like Stoner Metal, or heavy distortion for Death Metal? I'm not sure if you're knowledgeable in those genres and while I really don't play them super often, I might every once in a while. Otherwise, I stick in those genres I listed earlier.

    • @alexrcowan
      @alexrcowan  6 років тому +1

      Josh Falejczyk I think you’ll enjoy the jaguar man. You can definitely pull off some Stoner with the jag. With the right amp and pedal setup I think it will take care of everything you want to play and will be comfortable with it’s short scale

      alexrcowan I was honestly about to get the Jazzmaster before this but I think you got me sold. Don't get me wrong, J Mascis is my idol, but a Jazzmaster might have to wait for me lol. Oh and one more thing, hate to bother you but I gotta ask, have you had any experience with Mustangs? Fender released this Mustand 90 (a Mustang with P-90 pickups) and it seems pretty versatile and similar to the Jaguar with its 24" scale. Given it's like $200 cheaper as well, do you think it could possibly be a better choice than a Player Jaguar (given my situation and music taste) or no? I'm leaning on the no side but I just would like another opinion.

      Josh Falejczyk yep I have plenty of experience with mustangs, I own 3 haha. The p90’s are cool but they will be noisier than Humbuckers. If you dig that shape more than the other offsets maybe check out the duo sonic HS. I think that would be a better fit for you than the mustang 90. I also did a demo video on one of them so you can check that out too

      @@alexrcowan unfortunately Guitar Center was completely out of stock all over the country and couldn’t give me a time frame on when they’d get another fender? So I left and about an hour later I went back and purchased a Les Paul. I couldn’t resist especially when the wife was cool with it. She has some sweet sweet tones.

    Hi Alex. Awesome video. Just got this guitar as well. I was wondering what song you were playing at 3:48? I know that I've heard it before but I just can't seem to figure it out.
    Thanks

    Maybe the answer to my question is obvious but I'll make it anyway: Is this guitar better than the Godin SD?
