Dear Peter, your such a noble gardener, I’ve been watching your videos and have inquired great knowledge from you sir. I admire the way you explain in great detail and hope to continue learning more from a wise mentor.
I'm sad but comforted to know that only two out of the ten class participants have had success. I am not having success with my maples. But I will keep trying. Great video, as always Peter.
Great video Peter, could you please describe the season instead of which moths to make it easier for us in the Southern Hemisphere. It hurts my brain trying to work it out. Then I miss your valuable information. Thanks
This is the first video I've got to watch since my pacemaker implant surgery on the 28th. I love the peaceful effect it has on me to watch you display your masterful artistic talents. Thank you again Peter, and all the wonderful people @ Herons for your mindful inspiration. May you all be blessed more than abundantly in your health, wealth, and happiness. I can't wait to get back to building my Penjings and Bonsai Projects. Have a Very Merry Xmas and Happy holidays. Sincerely Richard Towle
Love how quick they have rooted so quickly. Cant wait to see the follow up vids on styling the original plants they got cut off from they look like some lovely trees
I’ve successfully air layered my lime tree, Japanese Maples and now I’m trying some Junipers as well. Thank you so much for your guidance Peter!! (PS: can’t wait to receive your book either!!) 😁👍🎉
Would like to hear you speak on the geometries of bonsai design, as 'cascade, over rock, raft, forest' etc and what species are better for the various designs and pot choice for them.
Great video Peter🙏 I have had great success air layering Chinese juniper and turning a rather tall tree into two much more beautiful, smaller and more interesting shaped trees. Cuttings from trimming and shaping the tree also root very readily, if a little more slowly to get established.
Wow, just started watching and learning from you, I'm giggling with joy as you show the new roots! I'm so excited to start my journey with you. Thank you so much!
It’s refreshing to hear someone say it’s ok to air layer throughout the year. I like to practice and experiment. I do so on all kinds of trees. I have one pine I use for just grafting practices. It’s has 30+ grafts put on its. It will never win any awards but it holds a large variety of genetic material including Pinus Sylvestris Beuvronensis which is for some reason very rare in the US. I found one at the local botanical garden and borrowed a tiny cutting which I grafted. I have also collected many varieties of cork bark pines all grafted on my practice pine. Grafts may do better in early summer but I have lots of them that have taken during other times of the year as well. I finally got a Japanese black pine to root from air layering. It’s taken about a year to do so. I’ll probably separate the tree once it warms up a bit in spring. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm. Mats H
Thank you.... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan this is another of you videos that is brimming with knowledge. You answered two of my less than intelligent questions and made me realize what you have stated many times. The trees are awesome, it is amazing how easily you multiply plants. I love Junipers almost as much as you love maples. I think I will have quite a few more Junipers, now. I do have another question. Have you ever successfully separated vertical airlayerings, one atop the other? Again, thank you, very much. 🎄🙏🖖🙏😔🙏🙏🙏🎄

I have about 6 junipers, 15 years old, planted in soil outside that I want to air root. Their trunks are about 4 feet long. Can I air root more than 1 at a time per trunk? Do you need to water moss before wrapping it up and once it's done rooting and you pot it into moss how often do you water it? When do you pot it into soil? Lots of??? Thanks again for sharing this! I absolutely 💯 ♥️ your channel!!!
You can but if you are not an expert dont try it because if you are too severe with the bottom air layering the top one won't get enough moisture of nutrient to survive.
Speaking of junipers, are you ever going to post an update on that half dead one you restyled last year? Even in the neglected state, the final result had a kind of terrible beauty to it. I would love to see what that tree looks like in good health and with new growth.
I’m always astonished at how easily he does this and his success rate. I have never succeeded in any of my air layerings. In fact, my most recent attempt failed and I nearly killed the whole tree (it’s in ICU right now).
Try ground layering, it’s easier bc you don’t have to worry about controlling moisture. Scratch the branch, cover it with soil and put something on top to keep it down. Water occasional or leave it be depending on location. I did this with my rose and hydrangea, actually I have a video on my rose result if you’re interested.
Hi Peter great vid again . I have a very big juniper in the garden when is best to dig and put into a pot looking forward to a Christmas trip to herons

Great info thanks😊
Wonderful informative video! Thank you! Do you water it strait in the bag as you are waiting for the roots?
Can I do this with the juniper growing in my back yard? It’s winter here in north central North America.
Yes
Will the moss stay moist until it roots or do you have to pull down the plastic every few weeks and add water?
Does it have to be a greenhouse plant, or could it be a garden plant? Would sudden night frost damage the roots in the moss ball?
If you air layer juniper in winter it needs to be protected from frost - that is why we use a greenhouse to keep ours in.
@@peterchan3100 thank you!
I was just imagining a deer shredding a mountain Juniper's branches off only to return the next year to see more Junipers.
Any time? Could i do this now even without a greenhouse? Are crytomeria the same?
Without a greenhouse would take a long time -you might as well wait till Spring.
is this the right time for airlayering junipers?
He airlayerd it august 24, and the time off recording(cutting layer) is 24 September. So today would be to late in similar climate(uk) I think
I air layer junipers throughout the year - in winter too.
I noticed you didnt cut a strip into the juniper like you do on maples or did i miss something?
Yes we do cut
Thanks Peter great video
Super !!!!!
Do you not need to remove bark on a juniper for the air layer then ?
Can i air layer a piece glauca, thank you for all you great video.
Piceas are more difficult to air layer.
Hi, where can I get the rooting powder?
Addicting videos Peter. Do you air layer with Japanese Black Pine as well?
I have never been successful with any pines although some of my US followers tell me that they have had good results with Black Pine.
Can i buy some some maple seed that that leaf turned orange?
We can only send to UK customers
