I love the part where after you have anymore than 3 projects, the project window becomes an absolutely ungodly mess, and there is no search function or sub folder project management.
To be honest I mostly keep it at the smallest size. If I'm a job where they have a lot of projects in one place (wouldn't have that on my system but in facilities or studios it's totally necessary) I'll just open them from the Finder / Windows explorer. A search function would be nice though...
Fair enough. I've used it on a short film and two features without too much issue but it's still got issues and do encourage the use of subcap as a substitute.
I believe you can still batch re-import still images. I demo'd in the video still doing batch reimport with image sequences which are the same format essentially. Try it and let me know how you get on. Batch re-import is still there it just doesn't work for QuickTime based media like ProRes, H.264s etc
@@theavidassistant you are correct. I asked/spoke too soon. I'll have to test the work-around for QT-based files as I often need to replace many graphics at once. I'll take another look at your video. Thank you for this.
I would like to know what happened to super bins and the ability to add meta-data and keywords for searching for clips. I don't like the new UI. I like the old school look and feel of it so much more.
You can still add metadata in the same way and you can still use the UI just like the old way of you wish with floating windows and the project window. Those options haven't been taken away. There's now just new options as well.
Not sure I've ever used that method even in classic titler. You could use subcap if it's for titling and import properly formatted titles that will then be laid down across the timeline. But pasting from a bin I'm not sure. You can make titles and save to a bin but it wouldn't be how I'd go about making subs.
@theavidassistant Preparing a dialogue list with TC is much more time-consuming, and the appearance of the subtitles using Avid tools is unacceptable (ugly). Only preparing the subtitles in advance in the classic titler gives satisfactory results. AVID took away this option and I can't use it anymore.
Are you by any chance on a windows machine? If so you can still use the classic title tool in the same way. Otherwise it may have to be done on the subcap tool. Which is highly customisable and you can have you subtitles look however you want.
@theavidassistant Yes, on Windows. How can I use the classic titler on MC 2023? Maybe the subtitle tool has improved ((although I suspect that it will not be able to handle the appropriate, automatic arrangement of punctuation marks, etc.), but preparing the TC list takes too long.
Do you mean jump from one cut to the next? There is a function you can map to the keyboard from the command palette called "Go to next event / go to previous event". This will jump along cuts (and if you want keyframes and stuff). In the user settings under "composer", go to the "move" tab and you can enable/disable "ignore track selectors" which will change how this works in terms of respecting specific tracks. Either that or just hold alt/option while you do it and it will invert the function to respect track selection or not.
Unfortunately you may be right. I was helping an editor earlier today who was cutting on a trash can mac and 2018.11 avid. And that was a large Amazon prime show too...
@theavidassistant I'm still using 6.5 and I can't upgrade to the new version because of the title generator. I have 300+ subtitles in each video and doing it in 2023 is impossible.
Titler+ is the worst thing ever created in any software. Buggy as hell. Please, don't defend this pos, it's unnacceptable. Avid knows that and they are doing a total overhaul of it. I wish they were faster, because any time I have to use Titler+ and get angry at the company.
While "worst thing ever created in any software" may be a little stretch, I do agree. I've never been in defence of titler+, I just grow tired of the CONSTANT complaints about it so I try to give a different take. Plus I try to maintain a fair balance. If you want my honest two cents on it it's this: I like the design of it an how it was INTENDED to work (with a few exceptions with it's controls in effects editor) but that's about the only nice thing I can say on the topic. Not only is the performance glitchy and inconsistent but I've also seen it change things when I've been away from a title. For example colour filling a word blue and then going away and coming back to find it white. Rendering doesn't seem to solve playback issues for some reason either. All in all it is a catastrophic blunder. HOWEVER my biggest issue isn't with the titler itself but with Avid's handling of it. I had a bit of a rant on the Avid Users of FaceBook page about this (though most people missed the point and just saw it as another I HATE TITLER+ rant) about how Avid really screwed the pooch on delivering this tool and handling the bad release. They should have had a WIDE public beta beforehand with elaborate testing and fixes, regular communication at all times of what they were doing to fix the issue, they should have ditched it and built a new tool earlier and most of all there should have been a public statement of apology put out for the whole thing. This would have helped to maintain customer trust and support. Instead they stayed relatively quiet. Just asking you to send your data to software teams to review. When you stay quiet it just looks like you aren't doing anything about it. And after four years, that's what many people came to feel. Now I know they are doing a total overhaul of it. I've had zoom calls with the developers on that topic. Still there should have been a lot more communication on this to the community.
@@theavidassistant great take. You got a subscriber. I completely agree. It's just that I've embarrassed myself enough in front of a director trying to use titler+. Thank God even them know how trash it is. Avid is a so well thought software that Titler+ really stands out as something completely unacceptable. We are talking of an ultra simple tool, that you often have to use, that just destroys your project or make you lose 10x the time you should spend in such an easy task. And to end up with a mediocre result that you don't wanna touch anymore because you're afraid it's going to explode in your face. Thank God that they are re-doing this atrocity.
100% agree. That's what I always use. I just never mentioned it in this video as colour levels were really part of the topic. I'd say Avid is fine for PNG image sequences but not ideal for single PNGs on their own (Avid's never been great at stills). If there's a more flexible layout that you'd like to suggest o Avid for media composer feel free to Make a feature request through Avid link and the Devs will see it :)
*Note* classic importing (including MP3s) and batch reimporting are now back on MacOS as of version 2023.12 (along with other nifty features!)
Thank you! Great Video!
Glad you liked it!

Thanks, I'm making the leap from 2018 to 2023 starting tomorrow. 🤞
super video. thanks especially for dynamic link tip. but i stil would skip the titler part of presentation.

the loss of batch reimport has been one of my biggest regrets moving away from 2018!
will this wokraround work for imported still images?

Is it possible, like in a classic titler, to prepare a bin with several dozen subtitles and then paste them into the timeline?

In the timeline how do I go cut the cut by selecting only v1 for example

Thank you
what about avid new proxy settings
Which new proxy settings you referring to? I don't think that's changed. Except in media composer enterprise which I can't get my hands on
It'll be 2040 and people will still edit with 2018

color level 'treat as legal range' is better for import and export!
