I hunted the Crest in Vallejo, Ca (ghetto) last March. Risky! While we were in the park the police rolled up across the street with guns drawn on dude. We figured nobody would be foolish enough to hunt there.
Fred you will need an acid test kit.Lots of chains are fake.Especially if they say italy since they are associated with high quality jewelry.My gold chain was fake.You also may want to run your etrac over some real gold chains.It will scare you how big a chain of gold a detector won't see.I got an $800 chain,and my excal or dfx neither one sees it.It tries to recognize individual links and fools the detector.Smaller chains ring up by the clasps.Hope it's real.
could be fake. I've heard of a lot of fakes with the italy .925 on it. That's really the only thing that makes sense. I've never had any kind of silver jewelry ring up low....of course I haven't found that many either...lol. Try to bunch it all up and run your coil over it....see if it gives a higher signal with a bigger target.

I had a IH ring up as 10-17 one time.. I still haven't figured that one out..I had it on vid so I wouldn't forget it... Good luck hunting this year.
the size and design of the chain may be the cause for the strange reading...what is important is that you dug it out...nice find..happy hunting...
