Lyrics:
If you are the dealer
I'm out of the game
If you are the healer
It means I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory then
Mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame
Magnified, sanctified
Be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the help that never came
You want it darker
Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my Lord
There's a lover in the story
But the story's still the same
There's a lullaby for suffering
And a paradox to blame
But it's written in the scriptures
And it's not some idle claim
You want it darker
We kill the flame
They're lining up the prisoners
And the guards are taking aim
I struggled with some demons
They were middle-class and tame
I didn't know I had permission
To murder and to maim
You want it darker
Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my Lord
Magnified, sanctified
Be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the love that never came
You want it darker
We kill the flame
If you are the dealer
Let me out of the game
If you are the healer
I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory
Mine must be the shame
You want it darker
Hineni, hineni
Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my Lord
Hineni
Hineni, hineni
Hineni
I am a huge fan of Leonard Cohen, and one day, I was at a music festival where Paul K played this as the opening of his set. I was socked to recognise the song, such a great moment, I was so happy to hear this song in such a place. For me, this remix is amazing and really respectful to LC original track.
That must have been an amazing moment.
@@FirstMetalHamster Absolutely. I can't quite imagine how I'd react if the opening bars of this came out of nowhere, unexpectedly. I'd discombobulate. Wow, what a moment. What a track.
lollapalooza 2016?
after about 30 years of listening to godawful dance remixes of hallelujah, i am glad this has all the poetic quality of a true cohen song. I will keep playing this, in the memory of one of the greatest lyrical writers of our time (who is generally not suitable for the dancefloor :)
The 90's style piano music at 03:26 took this to another level.
Brillant, Paul. Starker Abgang des Meisters der Melancholie…
Paul Kalkbrenner and Leonard Cohen what a great start of Friday
I understand why some people don't like this, and they're perfectly fine for doing so.
But I enjoy this remix alot, so cheers for it being here to listen to.
Bonjour Mr COHEN
Magnifique chanson et musique , excellente création, Bravo à vous
MONICA
Kalkbrenner doesn't destroy the original, as he has no such desire. He just pays tribute to the legend Cohen, by showing love and respect to his artistry. He doesn't try to be better than him, to create a better version. He just took a piece he loves and respects and re-imagines it. This is called 'homage'. Personally, I like both versions equally, for different reasons, their uniquely beautiful, each with its own way.
P.S. R.I.P. Cohen... you are truly missed.
I was ready to put a thumb down.
Your comment stopped me. It's true in fact, that this song is a tribute. Who I am to judge a fan work ?
I don't like this version because I found it a bit lazy.
Instead the tribute deserves a thank.
Greets to you to make me clever.
@@jean-christophelagier4444 The Original itself is pretty minimalistic :-)
@@agridecumates1238 I must say there are way better remixes of it. At first I liked it but then with the voice of cohen it self, na..
Can't say this holds water when compared to the original, but bless your point of view and your insight friend 🙏🙏🙏
As someone who has been a fan of Leonard Cohen for 30 years and had the pleasure of fulfilling a dream to see him live in one of his last shows, this song is not blasphemy or wrong. It is reworking a master to bring a new feel to the work and attract a new audience to the original. It's not better, but very interesting all the same. Think about all the different takes on Shakespeare.
The comparison with Shakepeare is a bullseye. Keep the intent of the play/song, its heart, its core and build around that, tweak, lift and shift and love it... There are so many crystal clear novel ways of interpreting Shakespeare's gift and this does a similar justice to an incredible origin. I can't imagine much better than this version but your angle of this being interesting shows how music can move from one style to another, bring in one audience then another, keep the heartbeat alive. Just lkike Shakespeare. What a great comparison.
Hehe, this pretend character Leonard Cohan has nothing on William Shakespeare. Get a grip ffs.
This song has its own powerful vibes not everybody can understand. For me, Paul made a masterpiece.
lol, curb your super powers of arrogance.
Hells yeah 👻🤟💗
I don't know if Leonard is still alive, but a version of Neil diamond's I am I said would be badass
4:42 "I am ready my Lord"
RIP Mr.Cohen
from Bulgaria
Green City Project that part gave me goosebump
I cry every goddamn time
RIP Leonard...
Well done Mr.Paul...Thanks for this masterpiece...He must be proud about it!
paul made me discover leonard cohen, and im thankful. this remix is great. get over it.
Turbul3nce_Productions welcome to the fold. Cohen is a holy experience.
cool. bring L Cohen to the youth. He is a timeless artist. remix and spread the word!
Agree
I doubt anyone below their 50s listens to Kalkbrenner.
Well you be wrong
If this song made it to official Leonard chanel, before his passing - he must have loved this song, and so do I
If someone ask me about my own impressions - a masterpiece. Mr. Leo - i think - could be proud. Anyway - great mix. Second part - when sun rises above the clouds. There is a hope. Still.
Paul Kalkbrenner gave the energy that was needed for a so powerfull song! Great respect to the legend behind it that let this happen.....
No, Paul Kalkbrenner cheapened and gutted a masterpiece.
Clearly we will disagree for different reasons, so be it. It really doesn't matter, masterpiece, pop music, whatever...
I have every idea about music. I've been in the business for 50 years, won 8 Grammys and sold 120 million records. The song is a masterpiece by a master. It's about aging and mortality -- serious subjects -- so a mindless, abrasive club mix that any 16-year-old could do in his bedroom is not a great accomplishment and it is not appropriate for a song of this gravity. Grow up.
And you have no idea about the English Language.
+John Denson HAHAHAHA john denson yes, the most experienced guy all over the industry. you are nobady dude, and your opinion sucks just like your music. At least i can make other people understand me in a foreign lenguage, do u speak any other lenguage, 50 yearold arrogant?!
Leonard Cohen is a legend, his lyrics and poetry are brilliant beyond words, and I've loved him my whole life, and yes the original song is amazing and dark, but I love how this remix juxtaposes a bit of a lively younger energy to Mr. Cohen's timeless mastery without sacrificing any integrity, good job, Paul!
So many emotions trough this song!😮😮😮
This song is the only song thats powerful enough in every way to fight my demons.
Listen to Heilung.
i'm 28 yrs old, still a bit young i think and personally this version for me its more powerfull than the original, with this electrified touch of bass, drums, beat, mixed with such mythical lirycs from the elder wisdom man, Mr. Cohen. The original version maybe will like me more when i hit the 50's but for now this likes me more. Is more adaptated to youngers generations.
To the comment "gutted and cheapened" a masterpiece. Overstatement much? He's not painting over the Sistine chapel here. He having his response to the genius of Mr. Cohen. I applaud the effort. In particular, since these variations can attract a wider audience to the Master himself.
Exactly what I thought.
A painting is not a song is not an orange.
You're missing the point John. This is more like all the high praised, modern interpretations of Shakespeares work. It's not the same, it doesn't pretend to be, but it pays its respect to the original. Also, like a lot of electronic music, which is known for combining influences from all over the musical universe, it makes people interested in the original.
And I'm having a hard time respecting your opinion, when you're calling us 'ignorant distracted masses'. Who are you to tell me what I am? Most people I know who listen electro/techno (like Kalkbrenner makes) are highly educated, widely interested and most of all lovers of all kinds of music. Some of these musicians are even composing with world famous orchestras (Jeff Mills in Amsterdam)..
I could send/show you some examples of good electronic music if you like?
Empty parasitic FAD that adds NOTHING except abrasiveness to the brilliance of the original. Like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. Sheeple ...
He's just cashing in on a great song.
THIS IS THE BEST REMIX OF LEO
Leonard got it. God, The Son, nailed on the cross.
*Magnified, sanctified Be thy holy name Vilified, crucified In the human frame*
echt su per zalig schijfke twee iconen in één plaat! Kalkbrenner You rock!! Lenord Cohen very dark but intense RIP
This was posted from the official channel of Leonard Cohen, so somehow, it received the approval of the master, so maybe it's about time to stop the hate!
He was ready, Lord :(
RIP Mr Cohen
why r u sad mate
Both are good but for different reasons. That's why Leonard Cohen is the best and that is poetry.
hail Leanard, thx Paul
Cohen is great, the original is great, this remix is great, it is al great! Give the man a nobel prize already
I would call this a tribute. Rest in peace LC.
The darkness and the emotion of the original version appealed to me. This is too bright and Cohen's voice is suppressed by the rhythm sounds and keyboards
So you want it darker?
Damn straight! Maybe it's because I mostly listen to some heavier music than this anyways
Are you still on this earth? Your comment is on point. But I can appreciate this version too. Maybe ehere I came from suits you better: the Solomun remix.
@@Calligraphybooster I very much am hahaha. Isn't that what we always think about some old comments, are they still alive? :D I didn't have much recollection of this remix but I can still say I don't like it. The background sounds good by itself but it just doesn't fit the track. I definitely prefer that Solomun remix from the get-go. Sounds both darkwave-ish and trance style. I would be super hyped to hear that shit at a club!
This is madness
I've loved LC since the early 1970s. This is good, but not better.
Incredibly powerful truth. Gd bless your soul, beloved Leonard!
Minulla(kin) on sinua, Leonard Cohen, IKÄVÄ! Löysät mullat ystävä.. Korvienvälitasoilla ratsastamisiin... .
This is so good. It actually deepens the message of the original song. Thank you Kalk.
Temazoooo!! a ver si esta disco
Cant get any darker than this! Masterpiece!
I really don't feel it that way. He took it and somehow turned it into a celebration of life. I think of it more positively.
Cohen for the dance floor or late night. Excellent work. Thanks to all for this
Yes, the mindless, drunken masses love to dance and party to songs about God and death. Idiot.
You really think that people who love to dance and drink (Leonard being a complete teetotal of course) can't overlap with people who think about God and death? Try listening to Depeche Mode, Moderat Massive Attack, James Blake, Faithless... Bomb the Bass, Baaba Maal...
I guess I won't see you singing the Hallelujah song at closing time.
John Denson Sorry, gotta go. The Jazz Police are coming
Sounds like an old Nick Cave. Love it. ❤️
Omg totally amazing
Great combination :)
Superb! Really
Good track
Rest In Peace Mr. Cohen...God Bless Your Soul!!!
God bless...? Is this a joke???its a blasphemous song!

Fuck the haters. Leonard would love it!
No, some marketing puke at the label talked him into it.
Sounds like someone pissed in your cornflakes John Denson.

Just Wow !
I’m down the middle about this remix. But I just stumbled on this quote from Mr. Cohen himself in an interview cited on “Brainpickings”:
"Echoing young Sylvia Plath’s assertion that 'once a poem is made available to the public, the right of interpretation belongs to the reader,' Cohen casts a benevolent eye upon the large and loving body of covers of his songs:

'I’m always pleased when somebody sings a song of mine. In fact, I never get over that initial rush of happiness when someone says they are going to sing a song of mine. I always like it.
[…]
That song enters the world and it gets changed, like everything else - that’s OK as long as there are more authentic versions. But a good song, I think, will get changed.’"
He is referring to covers, but I think a remix counts as well. There can be arguments made whether this is “more authentic” or not, of course (see the flame war here in the comments). But either way, it looks like Mr. Cohen gave us the last word on this in advance, doesn’t it?
RIP Mr.Cohen

He deserved a PK remix, TOP !
Why not ? Leonard Cohen ♥ miss him

Love this too.👍🏻
Cheers. ✌️😎
This is gold
Great remix
Cool remix of an amazing song - something you use as background music when working... very nicely done!
cool! love the dirty sound
It's with this remix just as with the remixes of Riders on the Storm. Haunting! I like this.
But nevertheless, I prefer the original version.
👌 good remix
very cool!
that warm feeling you get, when that one person looks at you :-)
RIP Leonard Cohen x

ME QUEDE FLIPANDO!!! ES GENIAL!!!
