    Thursday: A video, I think. Not sure what it is.
    Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

      Michael Caine clearly loved working on this. He took it just seriously enough so that Scrooge's meaness stood out and was able to be taken seriously yet still had Michael Caine's gentle charm to it that made him fit in with the Muppets.

      Also known as the Reverse Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick told half the cast of Dr. Strangelove that it was a comedy, and didn't tell the other half, who played their parts as if the whole thing was on the level. Then came Blazing Saddles, where everybody played it straight. Then came Airplane! where all these action film and TV stars were told to play it straight no matter how funny it was. And those might be the two funniest movies of all time.

    Scrooge doesn't hand out loans. In fact it was stated in the opening song "He charges folks a fortune for his dark and drafty houses."
    So this would make him slumlord.

    • @CamaroAmx
      @CamaroAmx 4 роки тому +58

      MD Jester he hands out high interest loans and when the people default on them, he takes their homes and rents them out or sells them, no matter the conditions of the homes. He obviously doesn’t maintain them either. He’ll loan to anyone but is very strict and swift on foreclosures (miss one payment and your history) hence the story of them kicking kids out of an orphanage. He’s a combo of a loan shark and a slumlord. Which sadly was very common in Victorian England, as there were little rules to control the banking industry and landlords. Orphanages relied totally on donations to continue. And there was also debtors prison.

The book also has a much harsher rebuke of Scrooge's comments about "the surplus population", by the Spirit. He pauses on his way to the grave to tell the spirit that "a life can be made right", in a way that makes it vey clear that he's referring to himself more than this mysterious dead person. I disagree that Scrooge is crying like he wasn’t expecting to see his name on the tombstone. Based on his emotional buildup and dialogue, I would argue that he absolutely knew that it would be his name but was in denial out of sheer horror. When he wipes away the snow, it confirms his fear and dashes any hope of not seeing that. It’s like that dread you feel when a loved one is in a bad accident, waiting, and then having it confirmed that no, they did not survive. That’s the emotional progression of Scrooge in the tombstone scene. And going back, he was aware but in denial of his fate for the previous few scenes as well. He knew that everyone was talking about him, but hung on to that little bit of plausible deniability provided by the other characters playing the pronoun game like a lifeline.

It still tears me up inside to hear the speech from Kermit after Tim's death knowing that the entire cast and crew were all feeling the absence of Jim and probably thought of him immediately when the phrase 'first parting among us' was said. Truly beautiful film!
    I love your reviews and the outtakes afterwards! However, now I'm stuck with the image of Scrooge texting Belle "I want to put my spoon in your Christmas pudding, love." Thanks!

    A sin for Scrooge using his money to do nice things? His character arc is learning not to be greedy but generous. He had pinched every penny; collected every cent; deposited every dollar. Hey Jeremy. The reason Scrooge gets a second chance is explained in one story I read a while back. It's from Marley's point of view. In order for Marley to get a second chance, he has to change Scrooge's heart. This is his task because Scrooge is even more heartless than Marley was, so it is a very difficult task. And Marley is revealed to be the spirits of Christmas in disguise.
