IMO the most infamous ghost goal that I know of was Sulley Muntari's goal in the match between AC Milan and Juventus in the 2011/12 Serie A. It was a title decider, and the decision is still being talked about to this day in Italian football circles.
@Vizeh as a Milan fan I can add to it that it wasn't directly a title decider, as the game was played in February (matchday 25), but it was indeed a top of the table clash between Milan and Juventus. Had that goal been given, Milan would've gone 2-0 up in the first half, instead the game finished 1-1. Milan went on to lose a lot of points in other games later down the stretch, gifting the title to a resurging Juventus. However, there's always going to be a "what if" that goal had been rightly given, would things have ultimately gone differently? Alas, we'll never know.
There's no clear indication about why Muntari had initially started this curse, but in 2021, Juve's domination was over and two Milan sides won the Scudetto each other after this. In 2023, Juve had a plusvalenza scandal with 10 points deduction, Napoli ended 33 years of hurt, and there were 3 Italian clubs playing in the different European finals, along with Inter Milan.
@@ezraezra2928 it wasn’t a curse. Milan missing out on the scudetto meant they also missed out on prize money that comes with it. And they desperately needed that prize money to keep their best players. Without it, they were forced to sell Thiago Silva, Zlatan and Cassano. Their veterans also needed to retire or leave because the wage bill was too high. Nesta, Gattuso, Zambrotta, Seedorf just to name a few. And it all stems from that Muntari ghost goal.
Stefan Kießling's ghost goal was insane. The funny thing about that he orignially missed the shot but he saw his teammates coming to him as the ball was in the net

The earliest ghost goal I remember was, I'm sure, by Clive Allen for Crystal Palace in the 80s. The goals we use today are a European design that we've adopted. The goals that were in use back then in the English league was like the ones you'll still find in lower leagues and grass roots football, with a goalmouth and the net draped over a pair of stanchions in the corners. He belted the ball from outside the area and it flew into the top corner, only to hit one of the angles inside the goal and pop back out again. Ref thought it had hit the bar. Just found a mention of it in the Wikipedia entry on Ghost Goals. I would have been 11 at the time.

You should do these honorable mentions, which will be added on Part 2 of your video: 1.AC Milan vs Juventus in 2012. Sulley Muntari had a goal being disallowed, despite it went to line before being bounced back by Gianluigi Buffon. The game ended in a draw and thus allowed Juventus to win the Scudetto. This also changed the Italian football, where 2 Milan sides didn't taste the Champions League glory for almost 10 years while Juventus won 9 consecutive Scudettos between 2012 and 2020, after which they crumbled down and then 2 Milan sides won each other in 2021 and 2022. 2.England vs Ukraine in 2012. Marko Devic scored a goal, which was disallowed because the ball accidentally hit by John Terry out of the goal line. Ukraine, who were the co-hosts of Euro 2012 along with Poland, lost by Wayne Rooney's solitary goal and were eliminated. 3.Barcelona vs Valencia in 2017. Lionel Messi's ball was hit by Valencian goalkeeper Neto, at which it passed Neto toward the goal line by several inches, but the referee disallowed because he was out of the sight. Barcelona failed to win this game after that (1-1). 4.Kasimpasa vs Galatasaray in 2015. It's just like what happened for Frank Lampard. Ryan Donk fired a rocket, at which the ball hit the crossbar and fell to 9 cm inside the line. The host, who trailed 0-1 at the time Donk's goal was anulled, only narrowly avoided defeat by 2-2 draw. 5.Spurs vs Chelsea in 2012. Juan Mata had a goal being given, despite the referee claimed that there was one Spurs player who deflected the ball out of the goal line. On a rare occasions, a ghost goal can also happened during the penalty kick, such as the one happened by Nigerian national football team during the 2000 AFCON Final, when they, as co-hosts along with Ghana, faced big favourites Cameroon. Victor Ikpeba had a ball being hit by the crossbar, at which it fell to several inches of goal line. The referee, however, recognized Ikpeba's penalty as a "missed one" because of nature rule, where the penalty may only be scored if the ball entered the goal line. Nigeria then failed to win the title by losing 3-4 after drawing 2-2 in 120 minutes. This harsh referee decision sparked a heavy riots in Lagos after the game.
The thing about the Garcia ghost goal is that we should have had a penalty anyway, after Baros was taken out during his attempt on goal. Anyway, great video as always.
Fun fact: ronaldos ghost goal against serbia saved someone’s life. Some guy got on the pitch an picked up ronaldos captain badge that he threw on the ground moments before. The guy took it home and sold it for a lot of money. He used the money to pay for his daughter’s hospital bills and she survived.

If you ever want to make a part 2, I've got a suggestion: Benfica - Porto 2004/05 season. Some context: Porto just came of the Champions League winning season, but they were struggling without Mourinho and Deco. Benfica were finally on the rise after the darkest period in the club's history (11 years without a league title). Porto took the lead. Then the game went completely off the rails (not that uncommon) with Pepe and Nuno Gomes being sent off. Then the situation itself: Petit (the best one) takes a long range shot. Vitor Baía fumbles the ball, whose last touch on the ground was on the line before it seems to go in. Estádio da Luz celebrates, before it is clear that the ref won't give it. The ref then starts distributing yellow cards to the Benfica players yelling at him. Benfica lost that match, but would go on to win the league. But to this day, this is still one of the most contested incidents in Tugão lore. Porto fans had a habit of calling Vitor Baia "the best GK in the world" after winning the UCL. To Benfica fans, it coined the phrase: "he is so good, he can save goals inside the line"
The Aston Villa v Sheffield United game was also the premier league game since the postponement of the league after the pandemic. So thats why hawk eye was turned off and the fact they forgot to turn it back on is shambolic lol
i do think sometimes, with the Villa ghost goal, if that would have went in and we did go down, how different it would be. also for sheffield united, would have gave them momentum to possibly get europe that season. insane how one goal changed so much. great vid liam
I think the thing with this “goal” is that I believe the keeper had control of the ball when the Villa player pushed him. Not sure it would have counted if it was caught going over the line anyway.
This also created a butterfly effect. This goal caused Bournemouth to be relegated. So after they were relegated, City bought Nathan Ake from them. He made a goal like clearance which helped Man City win the )premier League
Me and my family are all wba fans and when we watched that we all went absolutely spare because that decision pretty much kept you up, remember discussing about how var should’ve been used because goal line technology clearly failed
These videos are great content. I’ve seen so many ghost goals in this game, and the one that sticks out to me was the one England scored in the 2010 World Cup that was disallowed
I watched that England 2010 game at school when I was 11. Don't think it would have changed the difference in the result but I remember that day like it was yesterday
The Villa vs Sheffield goal was funny. Because almost every pundit was saying "well, they still had VAR. Why didn't the referee insist on going to the monitor and looking at it themselves". BECAUSE THERE IS GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY! You wally! For me, the greatest injustice of a ghost goal, was 08/09 Crystal Palace vs Bristol City, at Ashton Gate. Freddie Sears' shot, went in the goal, and ricocheted off the metal bar to keep the net tight. The game ended a 1-0 loss. But if it ended 1-1 or 0-1 to us. It could have spared us an incredibly tense last day of the season. With us needing at least 1 point, and Sheff. Wednesday needing 3 points.. In probably the tensest games i've ever watched..
Kießlings's goal, probably the most hilarious one, was the only one of those I actually witnessed live. Not in the stadium itself but still. It was a really funny broadcast. And since Leverkusen only stood a single point over 5th place at the end of the season I'm really happy it counted haha
To be honest, the Sheffield United match had a butterfly effect ti Bournemouth, I remember seeing a video about it, but something I remember from that vid was the sale of Nathan ake.
For a potential pt2, a fun bonus would be the sterling 'ghost' goal for England in the 2014 woeld cup vs italy. the way it was filmed made it look like a very convincing wonder goal and still insane to me how it did not go in from that camera angle.
For me the England vs. Germany one was the most insane non-goal I've ever seen, mainly because Lampard is my favorite player of all-time. Dude scored from CM like he was Messi, and him and Drogba ran riot for a long time. The ball wasn't like barely on the line, it was a foot over.
Great video. I remember all of these goals clearly. One goal which I was hoping to be included was the ghost goal in the match between Whitehawk and Stourbridge in the FA Cup first round. With the match at 1-1 going into injury time, one of Whitehawks players hit a spectacular 30 yard volley into the back of the net to win them the tie. However, it wasn't given because the referee had accidentally blown the full time whistle a split second before the ball actually goes in. He is unable to reverse the decision, meaning the teams had to go to a replay, which Stourbridge won 3-0.
You also forgot the match in 2011/12 season where Milan faced Juventus in San Siro and it was 1-1 until Sulley Muntari tapped the ball over the line but as expected,it wasn't counted as one and that lead to Milan not being able to win the Scudetto and it had started the Milan Banter era.
Another ghost goal that i remember is the one that panama scored against costa rica. I'm pretty sure that ghost goal was one reason why the US didn't qualify for the 2018 world cup.
Ronaldo's goal vs spain in the 2010 world cup (wasn't given). It not only would've eliminated spain, who ended up winning the competition, but it also was an amazing goal that would've certainly been nominated to the puskas award
@rednad839 not a ghost goal. A ghost goal is a goal that was either given but didn't cross the line or wasn't given and did cross. Everyone knows that goal went in and it was given, it shouldn't have counted because of a handball. Different situations
@@cell2179 i clearly said "handball" ..of course different situations.. my point is that it's unbelievable we got ghost goals & clear handballs at this age of football.
The earliest ghost goal I remembet that isnt infamous is the one between Bristol City and Crystal Palace by Freddie Sears where the ball goes in the net, clear as day, and yet it hits the bar at the bottom of the back of the net and flies out again. Ref had no idea and Warnock was doing his nut postmatch in a radio call.
About the 1966 final game, all the recent reviews of that goal, that I saw, using modern technology say that the ball didn't cross the line completely. This video is the first time I see one saying it was a goal. Guess we still don't know for sure 😂😂
The camera footage really wasn't great, so impossible to know. Knowing a bit about computer simulations, I also don't trust the "calculations" made that conveniently conclude it was or wasn't a goal. I saw a reconstruction a long time ago that said it didn't cross (done by German scientists, I believe*) It looks to me, from he best angle, as though there was space between ball and line, but it was jolly close: it could have thrown chalk up * Germans are a competitive people: at one stage they tried to "prove" that the KMS Bismarck only sank because their own sailors scuttled it, not the 700 shells and numerous torpedos we hit it with... All good fun
The Bayern vs Nürnberg one you mentioned has another interesting backstory. Because of that goal Nürnberg appealed against the result and the game was being replayed. That already was controversial as DFB just before that stated that the wouldn't have matches replayed due to false decisions by the referees anymore. In order to have the game replayed Nürnberg needed to proof that the ref and his linesmen were breaking football rules by not properly comunicating on what has happened and that was causing the goal to wrongly being awarded. The managed to do so after a public discussion and the game was replayed. Nürnberg then lost the rematch 4 - 1. At the end of that season the got relegated on goals. If the original result had stood they would have just managed to stay in the league meaning that by appealing to the result they caused themself to be relegated.
Ghost goals; When a goal is either awarded despite the ball not crossing the line example Liverpool vs Chelsea or isn't awarded despite the ball crossing example England vs Germany. Because of that infamous moment where Lampard did score but it was incorrectly disallowed, goal line technology had to be implemented for the next World Cup onwards and the top 5 leagues also uses it till this day.
Not watched it yet but wonder if there is a mention of the spurs goal against man utd that pretty much hit the back netting and still got disallowed on what would have been an awesome goal
You say about next video, and I've commented this on previous videos of yours, but I'd love to see a Premier league season review going through highlights/controversies/big moments from the season. Think a video like that would bang!
Love your content Vizeh, can you do a video on undeserved red cards? Like the Chelsea x Ajax game in 2019 when Veltman and Blind simultaniously got red cards and it was absolutely ridiculous. The ref retired after that game and UEFA issued an apology like 3 months later.
another undeserved red card is the second yellow card ronaldo got for "diving" against barcelona during the supercopa de espana when its absolutely clear that he was pushed and didnt dive
Ronaldo’s captain’s armband was picked up by a firefighter and sold in an auction for 64.000 euros. The money was used to help fund part of a treatment for a little boy called Gavrilo.
I remember watching that frank lanpard goal love me and my pops were going crazy cause it clearly went over the line till this day it lives rent free in my head
Im an Atletico Madrid fan and I remember one that actually happened in the 22/23 season. so, we played against Espanyol and around the minute 44 Carrasco took a shot and Pacheco saved it, it was heading towards Griezmann and went for a simple goal, BUT Pacheco saved it off the line and Atletico Madrid's players asked for the goal. The referee went to the VAR and gave it, it was revealed the next day that it wasnt a goal. I think it could have been the goal that made Espanyol descend so, the main reason it was given it was because the cameras werent in a good position and you couldnt tell if it went it. (you can watch the recap of the game in La Liga's channel so you see for yourself). Atletico Madrid is a shitty club but its worth mentioning the ''goal''
I have two notable mentions, one from my neck of the woods and the other one... from thereabouts: - There was this famous phantom goal in 2011 here in Costa Rica that my club (Alajuelense) was a victim of... the problem with that wasn't that the ball did not cross the line, or barely crossed the line, or entirely crossed but was blink-and-miss... the problem was that *the ball went all the way to the back of the net* , players celebrated... and neither one of the three blind mice acknowledged it. Would have been an equalizer as we were 1-0 down... - The other one is far less obscure: Panama against us for the final matchday of CONCACAF qualification for the 2018 World Cup. We were 0-1 up early on the second half, but Panama equalized through a ball that did not go through at all... but the goal was given. Panama scored once more before injury time (albeit legit) which resulted in them qualifying directly, and also leaving the US without a chance as they lost in Port of Spain; and with Honduras beating Mexico 3-2 meant that they were unable to make it to the CONCACAF-AFC intercontinental playoff either.
@@Vizeh Yeah, that second one really hurt the US, since it's what knocked us out of qualification for the 2018 World Cup (though IMO it was far from certain that that squad would've beaten Australia had they progressed to the interconfederational playoff).
I am literally at disbelief at that Reading Goal, i saw someone else say this but im literally not even sure which one was called a goal and i cant believe how aby of those were called a goal 😂
Woww i just realized that i completely misremembered the leverkusen goal, i watched the game live actually and i could've sworn that it was a penalty not a header, crazy details in my head too of Kiessling celebrating immediately. I guess it's that Mandela effect ha 😂 great video though
When a ghost goal happens, people are mad. Saying this, saying that. When goal-line technology exists and the ball crosses the line, the same thing happens. When the referee will be replaced with an automatic robot, the same thing happens. What is going on with football fans nowadays? 🥶
I don't know what clips are available but it might be worth doing a video focusing more on other leagues. With the exception of the Bayer goal, these all seemed to be English or international.
Chesterfield Vs Middlesbrough - 1997 FA Cup semi-final. Chesterfield denied what would have been a crucial goal, which the referee and his assistant failed to spot the ball had clearly cross the line. Game finished 3-3, with Boro winning the replay 3-0!

Means a lot man, thank you!
that Juan Mata ghost goal in the semi-final against Spurs is also very memorable
Nice video! Love the new content ❤
the background music is sick dawg
Great video. Please when doing a part 2, remember Henry's controversial goal when France played Ireland in a World Cup play off
To be honest, the Sheffield United match had a butterfly effect ti Bournemouth, I remember seeing a video about it, but something I remember from that vid was the sale of Nathan ake.
Real betis-barca is missing here, still have no idea how that goal didnt count
Great video and chatter as always Liam. Keep it up!
I was 6 during that world cup and when Lampard's goal was disallowed I almost punched the TV 😂
A 6 year old punching his TV is a funny thought I can't lie
For a potential pt2, a fun bonus would be the sterling 'ghost' goal for England in the 2014 woeld cup vs italy. the way it was filmed made it look like a very convincing wonder goal and still insane to me how it did not go in from that camera angle.
For me the England vs. Germany one was the most insane non-goal I've ever seen, mainly because Lampard is my favorite player of all-time. Dude scored from CM like he was Messi, and him and Drogba ran riot for a long time.
The ball wasn't like barely on the line, it was a foot over.
Nice video idea!
Thank you pal!
Great work Vizeh!!!
an underrated example of this is when barcelona faced valencia in i believe 2017
Great video bro
Great video. I remember all of these goals clearly. One goal which I was hoping to be included was the ghost goal in the match between Whitehawk and Stourbridge in the FA Cup first round.
With the match at 1-1 going into injury time, one of Whitehawks players hit a spectacular 30 yard volley into the back of the net to win them the tie. However, it wasn't given because the referee had accidentally blown the full time whistle a split second before the ball actually goes in. He is unable to reverse the decision, meaning the teams had to go to a replay, which Stourbridge won 3-0.
That’s crazy! I don’t know if that qualifies as a Ghost Goal by definition but I am sure I can get it involved in something!
Go on the whitehawk
your content is getting better and better
i will keep watching your Awesome videos untill infinity
You also forgot the match in 2011/12 season where Milan faced Juventus in San Siro and it was 1-1 until Sulley Muntari tapped the ball over the line but as expected,it wasn't counted as one and that lead to Milan not being able to win the Scudetto and it had started the Milan Banter era.
That dissapointing hot summer day in 2010 still feels fresh in the memory.
Bless you, Luis Garcia. Watching Chelsea and Mourinho complain about this until *checks watch*, nevermind, they're still doing it.
It’s been over 13 years and I can’t get over how egregious that Lampard disallowed was.
If lampards was given, we go into HT 2-2, completely different game. The mental drop having that goal not given made a big difference imo
Germany were head and shoulders above England that day. Even at 2-2 they’d have ended up hammering England.
@@JF1908x Wouldn't really say that. It felt like england players kinda gave up after that non-goal.
Barca got 3 in one year. Valencia, I think La coruna with Suarez with an amazing goal, and vs Real Betis that cost them the 2017 la liga title
Juan Mata’s “goal” vs Spurs in the FA Cup Semi 2012 surely deserves a mention
I didn’t expect the Lemmino music
Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid this season, was a complete steal
That Lampard goal had me screaming with rage at the TV. Couldn't believe what i was seeing.
Still can’t believe we get ghost goals at this age of football 😂
There ws one with Rochdale and Walsall this season but as it were an imfamous ghost goals I decided to leave it haha
Same thing i said about Henry's Handball vs Ireland.
@@rednad23ah yeah, it really is
The earliest ghost goal I remembet that isnt infamous is the one between Bristol City and Crystal Palace by Freddie Sears where the ball goes in the net, clear as day, and yet it hits the bar at the bottom of the back of the net and flies out again. Ref had no idea and Warnock was doing his nut postmatch in a radio call.
In the past decades, I heard that Clive Allen had a goal being disallowed during the Bristol City vs Crystal Palace game, same as Shears.
I saw a reconstruction a long time ago that said it didn't cross (done by German scientists, I believe*)
It looks to me, from he best angle, as though there was space between ball and line, but it was jolly close: it could have thrown chalk up
* Germans are a competitive people: at one stage they tried to "prove" that the KMS Bismarck only sank because their own sailors scuttled it, not the 700 shells and numerous torpedos we hit it with...
1:43 video begins
Luis Garcia goal was awesome
Ghost goals; When a goal is either awarded despite the ball not crossing the line example Liverpool vs Chelsea or isn't awarded despite the ball crossing example England vs Germany.
Because of that infamous moment where Lampard did score but it was incorrectly disallowed, goal line technology had to be implemented for the next World Cup onwards and the top 5 leagues also uses it till this day.
Hey Vizeh, Panama actually qualified to the 2018 WC thanks to a ghost goal on the last matchday against Costa Rica leaving the US out of the WC!
Not watched it yet but wonder if there is a mention of the spurs goal against man utd that pretty much hit the back netting and still got disallowed on what would have been an awesome goal
Love the LemmiNo music lol
How about Muntari's goal in 2012?? The result of that decision made Juve champions of Italy and not Milan
You say about next video, and I've commented this on previous videos of yours, but I'd love to see a Premier league season review going through highlights/controversies/big moments from the season. Think a video like that would bang!
ordering a josh windass poster soon love the content vizeh
let's gooo brooo!
For those who don't know....the whole ball has to cross the whole line completely to count as a goal. Believe it not, some still get it wrong!!
Love your content Vizeh, can you do a video on undeserved red cards? Like the Chelsea x Ajax game in 2019 when Veltman and Blind simultaniously got red cards and it was absolutely ridiculous. The ref retired after that game and UEFA issued an apology like 3 months later.
There could also be Robin van persies against barcelona. Even as a barca fan, that never should have happened
That’s a good idea my friend!
@Vizeh love from Amsterdam my friend🤘🏼
@iask247 yess for example!
another undeserved red card is the second yellow card ronaldo got for "diving" against barcelona during the supercopa de espana when its absolutely clear that he was pushed and didnt dive
Ronaldo’s captain’s armband was picked up by a firefighter and sold in an auction for 64.000 euros. The money was used to help fund part of a treatment for a little boy called Gavrilo.
Music by Lemino, never thought I’d hear it outside his channel. Good taste.
Atletico Madrid is a shitty club but its worth mentioning the ''goal''
the villa and sheffield goal should have had villla down that season
major injustice
From a Bournemouth fan we would stayed yp if they gave that.
Good luck next season
Up the cherries 🍒 ❤
Just liked and subscribed
Germany were so much better than us that day, no chance the Lampard goal changes the outcome
I have two notable mentions, one from my neck of the woods and the other one... from thereabouts:
- There was this famous phantom goal in 2011 here in Costa Rica that my club (Alajuelense) was a victim of... the problem with that wasn't that the ball did not cross the line, or barely crossed the line, or entirely crossed but was blink-and-miss... the problem was that *the ball went all the way to the back of the net* , players celebrated... and neither one of the three blind mice acknowledged it.
Some good shouts mate!
@@Vizeh Yeah, that second one really hurt the US, since it's what knocked us out of qualification for the 2018 World Cup (though IMO it was far from certain that that squad would've beaten Australia had they progressed to the interconfederational playoff).
Germany - Romania Euro '96, Dorinel Munteanu scored a goal that was overruled
I am literally at disbelief at that Reading Goal, i saw someone else say this but im literally not even sure which one was called a goal and i cant believe how aby of those were called a goal 😂
I feel like ESPN. Did this shit back in the day and u just recapped the same this cool 😂❤
Woww i just realized that i completely misremembered the leverkusen goal, i watched the game live actually and i could've sworn that it was a penalty not a header, crazy details in my head too of Kiessling celebrating immediately. I guess it's that Mandela effect ha 😂 great video though
Brentford , Luton and Bournemouth all in league 2 on that first clip, now all in the PL.
When a ghost goal happens, people are mad. Saying this, saying that.
When goal-line technology exists and the ball crosses the line, the same thing happens.
When the referee will be replaced with an automatic robot, the same thing happens.
What is going on with football fans nowadays? 🥶
I think that The Most INFAMOUS Ghost Goals In Football History was the one done by Geoff Hurst in the final of the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
It was probably a goal :)
To be honest. If the Luis Garcia goal was not given, a penalty would have been awarded.
Exactly and you can clearly see Geoff hursts hit the line🤣
I don't know what clips are available but it might be worth doing a video focusing more on other leagues. With the exception of the Bayer goal, these all seemed to be English or international.
You forgot Messi vs Valencia 2017, but great video
Chesterfield Vs Middlesbrough - 1997 FA Cup semi-final. Chesterfield denied what would have been a crucial goal, which the referee and his assistant failed to spot the ball had clearly cross the line. Game finished 3-3, with Boro winning the replay 3-0!
When I think of 'Ghost Goals' I automatically think the Frank Lampard Vs Germany. That ruined my childhood
Ghost goals season?! Alright, OK, I'm interested!
I've never seen anyone do a video on this, very proud of this idea!
@@Vizeh pretty great so far into it, another banger Viz!
Freddie Sears for Crystal Palace vs Bristol City in 2009
When lampards goal against germany wasn't given my mate picked up and smashed his telly off the wall😂😂
Do a video on worst own goals in history!
