      Is this medically legal?
Obviously giving her a tiktak and a cheeseburger doesn’t sound like a crime, but if something seriously bad happened after that, her condition worsened, and they discovered that the doctor deceptively prescribed her a tiktak and claimed it was a cure..
surely “wanting a quick answer to the ED question” does not justify the ‘prescription’ and possible damages?

@@ahumanaperson Well, their job is to diagnose and treat her. Her potentially lying is getting in the way of them diagnosing her, and the sooner they get a diagnosis the sooner they can start treating her. Her condition would have worsened either way, and she'd have to eat sooner or later regardless.
If he gave her the tic-tac and sent her out the door that'd be a different story, but she's still under medical observation.
This was done in her best interest so I seriously doubt the doctors could get in trouble fo that.
Also no doctor would claim something as a cure. Those don't exist. Treatments do, and even when they're foolproof on paper it's still trial and error, because everyone's body reacts differently.

actually in medical studies when they are testing a new drug out some of the people in the study are given a placebo, but none of the patients know if they are getting the placebo or not

@@ahumanapersonit's... something of a grey area. It certainly isn't looked upon fondly to actually register that you gave a placebo to a patient, but simply giving a placebo as part of a diagnostic procedure isn't illegal so long as the use of said placebo isn't inherently dangerous or reckless.
Dr. Charles's approach here was fun for tv, but might be a bit too risky irl. If she is vomiting and the cause isn't known and an eating disorder has not been rules out, making her swallow food could be dangerous. Of course, the issue there wasn't necessarily the tic tac itself as much as the burger that came afterwards, but that's beside the point.

    • @maxi1ification
      @maxi1ification 23 дні тому

@@ahumanapersonplacebos are only standardized in matters of research, where they ARE used in cases of double blind clinical trials, where a group of patients is given the drug being tested and the other a placebo, and neither the patients nor the doctors know which person is receiving which.
Idea being to compare how the progress of a person goes between the drug and the placebo and see not only if there is improvement or adverse effects, but also if what improvements there are justify the cost of using the medicine in question since if it is little better than a placebo then bother spending time and resources with it?
Thus the placebo patients are a "control group" to have a frame of reference.

Note that the placebo was used to confirm that she didn't have Anorexia. She actually had a physical condition that was making her sick. Not an Eating Disorder, or ARFID, or Munchausen(how do you spell this) by proxy, aka Factitious disorder imposed on another.
    * The fat surrounding her stomach that was there to support it reduced causing her stomach to lay in a position that caused an obstruction. She didn't want surgery and was given a feeding tube to ensure she got nutrients.
*Some people seem to have poor reading comprehension. Im not speculating, just explaining what the TV SHOW says she has. It's a one-off appearance and was resolved in the episode.
Anyone that is going through or has been through an Eating disorder, please know that you are strong and can overcome it. You are beautiful and amazing.
I encourage people to read my comments to learn more about different kinds of disorders people can go through. To everyone in my comments, I wish you nothing but the best hope that one day you will get better or achieve stability.

Symptoms were nausea, abdominal pain on my right side after meals, and violently and involuntarily throwing up everything I ate, no matter the amount or what it was. My options were punish a healthy organ for working way to well by removing it, or trying a diet change. Just a quick note; it wouldn't be by proxy. By proxy is if you are doing it on someone else's behalf. If she was making her mom sick or if mom was making her sick. If she was doing it to herself, for attention, it is just considered Munchausen. 😊

Ive been having stomach problems for almost a year.
Hard to eat, could hardly function, sick to my stomach and felt like i was going to pass out.
    8 months of hell.
Finally a new doctor that actually believed me and didnt think it was caused by stress, she actually belived me that i wasnt crazy, did some blood work.
I have less than half the vitamin D i need and my calcium levels were hanging on by a thread.
Low vitamin D and hypocalcemia can cause everything i was feeling.
Im on the track to recovery. Such simple little things caused so much damage.
Sometimes it is psychiatric and that should always be an option and should be looked into and ruled out, but sometimes it is something physical and to reject that as a possibility will make the patient feel like they are insane and make them feel worse.

I just rarely feel hungry and the thought of eating or preparing food is enough to skip it until I'm so starving I'll just eat whatever is fast and easy - idk if my adhd or what is the root of this issue, but I've always been like that and it's gotten worse with age. I have a special place for these people in my heart.
I was NOT anorexic. I didn't have an eating disorder in that sense at all (I probably had psychosomatic nausea from anxiety/stress/ and a fear of vomiting). I was so nauseated all tye time. So nauseated.
    Water was hard.
I got down to 88 lbs. Doctor said if I didn't eat They'd have to tube me. He recommended Boost high protein. Mother bought one of those slushy makers and I managed to eat a quarter, then a half. Over I was still on a liquid diet and things still set me off super often, but I really enjoyed the boost.
I progressed to chicken noodle, then noodles with small amounts of butter and cheese, then toast, small sandwiches, and hamburger helper.
I LIVED off of ranitidine before and after every meal and gasex superstrength as often as it was prescribed on the regular gassex.
Norovirus WRECKED my system and my mental health wasn't good either.
Getting on an SSRI also helped.
I am now medication free and can eat anything I want! To the detriment of my body(is joke, but I am 220, working on getting all my nutrients back in order and then adding exersize).

Once you reach the “point of no return” you’re sick all the time, even when you eat you are sick and could throw it up. Anorexia is scary to deal with, and I also am autistic and have ARFID. This is a SLOW recovery process, you have to teach your stomach to allow more and more food each time, and getting that food down is literal hell on earth. I had to shake my arms and legs as I ate to combat the nausea, I had to get up with my arms up in the air to get more air to my stomach to settle it. Anorexia, no matter what reason you have it is a mental game more than anything. Anorexia also can make you developed a fear of food which is likely what this patient was suffering from as well since all food made her sick, she needed to be told there was a magic pill that would get rid of that for her so she was able to use the placebo effect to think she could eat safely. ❤ I hope anyone who is suffering from this gets the help they need, and take it one day at a time. Recovery is possible. Rely on protein shakes too, those things have literally saved my life and helped my stomach allow more food intake.

i’m also autistic with arvid!! i had anorexia at 13 and am still dealing with it at 22. i’ve gotten much better but i still haven’t gotten my body to reverse how it feels hunger. i don’t get a normal hungry feeling anymore, i just feel empty and nauseous. and yes i eat very regularly. doesn’t matter. i have to eat very slowly if i get too hungry because otherwise i’ll feel like i’ll throw it up. all food becomes disgusting if i’ve gone to long without eating (literally could be just 6 hours but i’ll differently feel DISGUSTING at the thought of eating). i only have textural/flavor avoidances thankfully so it’s not as hard to find safe foods. but yeah, it’s no where near easy. i’m just thankful the last few years i’ve had amazing supports who helped me ❤️ i’ve even gained 30 pounds in the last two years. i’m learning to love this new body and it’s hard but i know i can do it

I remember watching this episode for the first time. I had an eating condition very similar to that, I liked to eat, never was much of a binge eater, but whenever I did eat I got anxious and vomited. It made me lose a lot of weight and, of course, whenever I got to the doctor they would say that it was "anorexia nervosa" and dismiss any other explanation.
Well, it turns out, the perfomance to eat well and fast is what caused me to develop this food anxiety. It wasn't the same as her case, but our symptoms were still very similar (the sitting position with my arms around my legs worked for me too!). I only managed to work that out in the covid pandemic, when I didn't have to worry about "perfoming" to other people.
I remember getting so angry at the female doctor for dismissing other diagnosis because that's something I was sooo familiar with, going to the doctors. But well, at least I've been going strong for 4 years now!

    • @Sereia1
      @Sereia1 28 днів тому

Sick kid here. And no, it’s not, though stressed moms do cause problems - one you have exemplified very nicely.
When a (justifiably) worried mom acts stressed/overly protective/emotional during a doctor’s visit, a young patient’s symptoms are more likely to be perceived as stress-induced, drama-related and thus psychological. Realistically though, there is still a very very good possibility that the patient’s symptoms have a physiological cause - which in turn elicits highly emotional reactions from stressed and concerned parents.
We need education on both sides here. Medical professionals should be more understanding of how mentally taxing a physical disease is for patients and their loved ones and not let their prejudice on emotional behavior impair their judgement. Parents, on the other hand, need to check in with themselves and the medical team on how to best help their child and seek psychological guidance for how to process their emotions instead of dumping it all over the already sick child.
Not too long ago, the girl in the video was me, slowly starving due to an inability to eat (due to a physical cause; we found out two years ago). Being a young female with this type of parent (however well they may intend it) in the healthcare system is so tough. I don’t know much about being a parent of a sick kid from experience and hope I never will, but I bet it’s really hard too. So give them all some grace, for I think of them daily and they need it so❤

Our daughter was diagnosed with an eating disorder after returning to her pediatrician several times regarding nausea and vomiting. We went to a psychiatrist and a therapist for months and things got worse. She then began having double vision in her periphery and we took her in again. Finally, they did an MRI. That day she was on a life flight to children’s hospital in Salt Lake due to two large brain tumors on and near her pituitary. She survived but was in Salt Lake children’s hospital followed by Seattle children’s for the better part of almost three years. She then had non malignant tumors discovered in her twenties, due to the extreme amount of radiation she had when she was 13 and 14. She has a litany of lifelong health issues due to the brain cancer and the treatments including diabetes insipidous, thyroid issues, endocrine issues, etc. She stopped growing even though she had daily growth hormone injections (she is 4’8” and looks prepubescent). I wish we had followed our instincts and demanded further testing when we were repeatedly told it was an eating disorder.

WHOA THIS IS WHAT I HAD. It's called SMA (Superior Mesenteric Artery) syndrome. It's caused when you lose the fat pad surrounding the lower portion of your stomach and the artery resting on top starts to press into your stomach and block digestion. I slowly became unable to eat more than a few bites of anything without extreme nausea and pain. Just before I was hospitalized the most I could hope to eat in a day would be a yogurt, a few saltines, and a couple bites of a measly sandwich, but I had a feeding tube for a while and it is resolved now. I'd never heard of it before being diagnosed but it's cool to see it in a TV show.

If only primary care physicians actually looked into things like this the way docs on ER shows look into their non-emergent patients. In real life, this patient would have been given fluids IF needed and sent home and told to follow up with their PCP.
They don’t run a bunch of tests in the ER to figure out why you’ve felt crappy lately. If you’re walking, talking and breathing then you’re sent home lol b

This reminds me of what i had in high school. Apparently i had severe acid reflux and gerd, some days i could eat fine. Others i couldnt eat anything at all without horrible pain, not even water. Sometimes the pain would come on even if i hadnt eaten anything. I wanted to eat i just couldn't. Only puking could make me feel better, at the time i was underwight and exhausted half the time. Thankfully Beano, Keifer and stress management helped it go away, but it was hell for the longest time, felt like my body was punsihing me for literally trying to keep myself alive because i needed to eat and drink water.

When i had appendicitis, most symptoms talk about nausea, fevers, and specific pain. All i felt was better if i ate something and in pain all over most of the time. My family had a history of Crohns disease and severe obesity, and i was so dang scared this was some eating disorder. I just felt better when eating and eventually went to urgent care after the pain stayed for over a week. I can definitely see where you know there's something wrong, but you also feel on the border of some eating disorder because of how people see you.

The damage stomach acid causes from these types of issues, is the most frustrating part imo.
My stomach does this with most food. Mainly solid. Soft solids are fine sometimes. I have so much damage from all the puking that it also now hurts to eat most foods. Bread is gentle, and the only thing I can keep down sometimes. Sometimes, even bread just won't stay down. I have to sit my cold drinks out for a bit before I can drink it, or it feels like putting freezing water over a burn. It hurts too much to consume cold or hot food. It's not every time I eat. Just most of the time.
It hit me really hard while I was still healing from spine surgery, so that was fun lol.

As someone who used to struggle with anorexia, I think the placebo was just to see if she'd be willing to eat. A few times I was prescribed nausea medicine or something else because of my claims, and then when I would be given medicine to correct it, I would still find another issue that would "prevent me" from eating. Either that or I would just make it look like I was eating.

I was in emergency one night 2 years ago. I was in a very bad mental state and my parents were concerned because I said I didn’t want to be around. It was passive ideation but they were scared so dragged me there.
For around a month up to that I had been struggling to eat. Everytime I ate I couldn’t keep it down. I was so constantly anxious and was having daily intense panic attacks. I PHYSICALLY could not keep anything down.
The head adolescent psychiatrist took one look at me and told me to stop being silly and just eat. That refusing to eat wouldn’t solve anything. He wouldn’t listen to mine or my mother’s explanation. He was adamant that I was just some dumb teen with an ED.

There are so many conditions that can make you vomit that aren't ED related. I have cyclic vomiting syndrome and before we figured it out... at one point I was vomiting so much for months on end that I was blacking out. They kept giving me oral nausea meds but I would throw it up before it had any chance to do anything and because I was over weight they kept accusing me of being bulimic. Why would I be going to the Dr constantly to give me med to make the vomiting stop if I was? Thankfully now I have proper nausea patches and we've been eliminating triggers that can be removed.

My friend had a condition called achalasia which caused this. Basically the muscles in her esophagus that open/close to let stuff into the stomach stopped working. So her body would throw it up since it would just get stuck in her esophagus. She lost so much weight, and she was already a skinny girl. She almost died. Thankfully they were able to preform a surgery to fix the muscles.

    • @jennifernorthcutt6462
      @jennifernorthcutt6462 2 місяці тому

@Riivorn it is actually the brain not getting the signal to make the lower esophageal sphincter open because the esophagus has low or no motility. During the surgery they cut that muscle where it is open all the time. Achalasia has no cure & is supposedly rare. In my opinion it is under diagnosed or misdiagnosed as other things & isn't near as rare as they want us to believe. There are not enough of us for the pharmaceutical companies or doctors for it to be profitable for them to find us a cure. I'm one of the lucky ones to have been diagnosed rather quickly. Most spend 5 to 20 years begging for a diagnosis.

It was like morning sickness then at night I felt better. It finally stopped last year. I had a uterine polyp removed and it finally stopped throwing up. Good luck it’s really one of the lesser known perimenopause symptoms and doctors thought I was crazy. I took zofran for it but that made me dizzy. I still don’t know for sure if it was the polyp but a hormone specialist told me it could have caused inflammation. Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ good luck because the sickness is the worst.

I had the same problem in the past. Everyone thought that I had anorexia and would always try to make me eat the food when I couldn’t even finish it before starting to throw up. I even got into a big argument with my mom about that. BUT I like the food , I love eating and I wasn’t even trying to loose weight. I tried to do everything to gain several kgs back ,but it didn’t work out. So ,I went to the gastroenterologist and they found out the problem. And it was not anorexia . The way my family and friends shut up after that and actually started to listen to me .
I was able to gain the weight back and solve the problem with some procedures and medications. But now I have chronic gastritis and very sensitive stomach . So, I still need to look out what food I am eating. 😅

🙄 The tic tac was used for the placebo effect. The patient takes the tic tac thinking that it's medicine going to help. If it does then they know that the problem is mental. But if it doesn't then the problem is physical.

I actually had this issue! It’s called MALS!! I had it fixed through a surgery where they took out my celiac ganglia and trimmed back my diaphragm. I hadn’t been able to eat any solid foods for over a year because of it.

Ah gastroparesis. I’ve been in remission since 2022 and can say you really don’t realize how much you take for granted until it’s gone :)
