I have used this lanskey croc box for years. I clean rods with barkepers cleanser and scotch Brite pad with water. Comes out perfect. Thanks for the detailed vider6
Hello from Atlanta Georgia hey I really love your presentation you did a great job in showing us how this Lansky tool works for sharpening your knife I really like your formula you did great I learned something today God bless and I will buy one I subscribed to your Channel
Thanks nice video however I would like to suggest well you do that sharpening you turn the box around so you hold the opposite end of the turn box puts your hand much further away from the blade just in case also cleaning the rods is much easier with comet cleanser and a Scotch-Brite pad No effort at all clean and very easy
The mention of that eraser rubber made my day. Found my old skateboard griptape cleaning rubber, so now my sharpening stones are clean to the touch again :D thanks
Canadian Cutting Edge They cost right around 35 usd including shipping here in europe. just under 40 usd for the deluxe version with a darker pine wood box. i contemplate buying this. but then again. i have the tools and wood to make it myself :) all i need is the rods. i hope to find a nice set of rods cheap some day, and then make some modular system out of the supplies i already have in stock :) win win
Hi Jake hope you and the family are well am always including you your family and your mom in prayers. I just ordered the turn box system and eraser through your link after watching your video LCD5D. Can't wait to get it. :-)
Thank you for your prayers. My mon's health is steady on, not getting worse or better. I am sure that after just a little practice you will be very happy with how the turn box rods perform.
I have both the Lansky turnbox system you reviewed in this video and the Spyderco Sharpmaker, which costs 4x as much as the Lansky. Believe it or not, I sometimes will find I just can't get a knife sharp with the Sharpmaker but when I take it over to the Lansky, it sharpens right up. I speculate that maybe the very hard and smooth Sharpmaker rods sometimes just flip a burr back and forth but don't always remove it. The Lansky rods, being a bit rougher in texture, might just catch and rip the burr off. The best way to clean any ceramic rod that I have found is to put Bar Keepers Friend or other powder cleanser on a wet Scotch-brite pad and scrub them down and rinse them off. They clean up real fast. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Joe. That is a very telling comment. One thing that I have found over the years in the knife hobby, as far as knife maintenance goes is that: More expensive seldom = better. THANKS for the hint on how to clean the rods more efficiently. I don't know the product "Bar Keepers Friend" but I will look it up. Scotch-brite pads... well that makes complete sense...
Joe P yup. Bar keepers friend works best. I actually make a wax with it, once it’s hardened, wet it a bit and rub a toothbrush or nylon brush in it to make a almost soapy lather, then brush away, and wipe dry. I might have a new innovation here lol.
Simone Stella or perhaps acquire some freehand skills? Practice practice practice then do it some more, until you’re at the point where you can take your knife on a camping trip, without the silly sharpmaker, and be confident enough that you can hone the blade on any flat stone surface. This way you won’t have to rely on gadgets and toys to sharpen your knives, you would be able to take any whetstone, or honing stone/finishing stone, and create a surgically sharp blade once you master free-handing. If you cannot freehand, you can NOT sharpen a knife, period.
Great video and review Jake. I have a Spyderco Sharpmaker, and to clean metal filings I use white toothpaste. It is gentle yet abrasive enough to get the rods clean.
Good instructional video. I would suggest starting on the 20 degree rods and finishing with a 25 degree micro bevel. The Lansky system works great. No need to spend more.
Some people like micro bevels, I don't use them much. I don't say that they are a bad idea, not at all, just not the way I do it, but it certainly is a valid way to go if that is what a person prefers.
OK, thanks. And to clarify, I mean rotate but not left or right, but like downward, directing the point of the blade towards the wood. It seems you do rotate downward, directing the point towards the wood. Does that matter?
What I like about this sharpener is that it doesn't remove too much metal from the blade so the blade will last much longer. It's also the perfect sharpener to pair with Ganzo knives.
It took me a whole weekend to decide between this and the blademedic. But the smaller size and price won me over. This does look like good system though.
If I could have only one, either this or the blademedic I would have had a tough time too. I would buy one and then save for how long it took to get the other one because they compliment each other, moreso than compete.
It sounds like the section on cleaning the rods hit a cord with a lot of folks, it's the most common point that people are commenting about on this video. Good ideas. Thanks for the idea about cleaning stropping leather too!!
By the way, have you actually done a measurement to see if the 20 and 25 side are what they say they are? My turn box, the same one you have, the 20 side is more then 20 degrees, way more, I don’t think they drilled the angle correctly. The 25 side is about right. Please let me know if your turn box has issues with the angles, so I know whether to write Lansky themselves or just fill in the holes and make my own angles, thanks.
I hadn't done so before now, but I just checked and mine are quite close for both sides. I would contact the company for warranty replacement or simply take it back to the vendor for a replacement. It could be a batch issue too. Maybe a whole batch came out wrong - that would be my guess if you go back to the store and the second one is the same as the first.
Canadian Cutting Edge thanks for getting back to me, I’ll probably just turn that 20 side into a 15 cause that’s what my pocket knives seem to like anyways, take care.
Oh yeah, it matters. If you rotate your hand you are changing the angle - that's a big NOPE if you want a consistent angle along the length of the blade.
@@CanadianCuttingEdge OK, thanks. And to clarify, I mean rotate but not left or right, but like downward, directing the point of the blade towards the wood....
Thank so much for subscribing. I believe you will find that this Lansky system will work very well for you. Be patient in learning to perfect the use of it.
My Lansky turnbox system just came in today, after watching your review I was convinced I needed it. My Y-Start Jin01 came not so sharp so this sharpening kit will definitely help with that. Too bad that I could not order it for much cheaper on Amazon, because I don't have a credit card (why don't they support Paypal?).
eBay owns PayPal (or visa vera) and that is why Amazon doesn't use PayPal. I just switched banks to one where they gave me a VISA - debit card. That means it uses VISA card system but the money comes straight out of my bank and it is not a credit card at all, but I can use it anywhere a VISA credit card is accepted. Maybe there is some bank where you live that has that kind of VISA - debit card?
I recommend it over the spyderco for the person who has a tight enough budget. There really is nothing the Spyderco can do that I can't do on this, so for most of my viewers I would suggest they go with this Lansky.
Nice video. However, at 2:40, when you talk about Lansky’s 8inch ceramic rod, you mention that it is a fine ceramic rod. That is unfortunately not the case. I ordered that same rod off Amazon, and the rod that is advertised, is the medium ceramic , so not the (fine) white rod in the turn box set, but the grayish rod instead. Just wanted you to know this for future reference.
I sharpened knives for fellow worker pocket knives and knives for working using nothing but the old three stone system and and old belt for stropping. Dunt think there were manu knives this wouldnt sharpen hair shaving sharp.
Harry, I totally agree with you. Those who are good at good old fashioned sharpening like you describe are becoming rare, and I salute you!! I look for more modern systems that work quickly and are fast to learn because that is what many people are asking me about - they don't want to take the time to learn how to hand sharpen the good old fashioned way. Or like me, some people with hand pain, in my case arthritis, simply want a system that is easier in that regard.
Thanks for the video on this. What's the best place to buy knives within Canada with good pricing? I don't want to ship in from USA with the crazy border security guards stealing the goods.
There is no one place that is best. Canada customs is indeed taking away a lot of locking folding knives. But if you want other types of knives then don't be concerned about getting them from outside of Canada. ruikeknives.ca has a very good selection of knives at great prices, those are all within Canada already, but that is just one brand. The biggest store in Canada is BladesCanada, also known as Warriors and Wonders, from Vancouver. their prices are good compared to all stores within Canada but are a fair bit more than buying knives outside of Canada. What I usually do is have my purchases sent to a friend in USA and he then mails the knives to me. Canada customs allows personal packages through with much less investigation than packages from knife stores. That is also why I like WhiteMountainKnives.com - the owner ships using his personal name and not his business name. None of the orders I have placed with him have ever been stopped by customs, but of course, there is no guarantee. Even when I factor in the #'s of knives that customs has taken away from me, it is still cheaper for me to buy from USA than it is to buy from Canadian vendors (except for from ruikeknives.ca - they have awesome prices).

My Spyderco Sharpmaker won't sharpen my Cold Steel Master Hunter to save my life. Maybe this Lansky system will?

Thanks for the idea of toothpaste, it is indeed a great mild abrasive for many things.
I bought this sharpener a few months ago and just started using it recently. It is slowly becoming my go to sharpener.
I do like it a fair bit. Good for maintenance of edges that are just a bit dull but otherwise in decent shape.

oh, that type of rotate - that's no problem. Do whatever is more comfortable for the person doing it.
What I like about this sharpener is that it doesn't remove too much metal from the blade so the blade will last much longer. It's also the perfect sharpener to pair with Ganzo knives.
Exactly, slow and easy with only a minor touchup, that way the blade will last as long as it possibly can.

I've been looking at these for a while, humming and hawing, wondering if these were any good. Thanks for showing it to us.
Glad I could show you something about them
I use a Faber-Castell white pvc free eraser to clean my Lansky stones, learned this from youtube, cleaning stropping leather with a pink eraser.
It sounds like the section on cleaning the rods hit a cord with a lot of folks, it's the most common point that people are commenting about on this video. Good ideas.

Hi, Jake, I would like to recommend dish liquid soap and scrouthing pad, it works wonders for me. Piggy

Do you have to move straight back as you go down? Some people rotate their hands as they go down. Does it matter?

There are loads of different pronunciations of words in the English language, and it all depends on where the speaker grew up.
