Man, all these comments talking about how scary this is... I thought it was weird until I realized what was happening and then I started cracking up. This is a pretty clever and hilarious skit.
+BabyCharmander Watching as an adult, the humor, concept, and message behind it is absolutely brilliant! BUT as a small child, it would have frightened the hell out of me. I was an avid Muppet Show fan as a child(and still am), but for some reason-I missed this one or repressed it because I had no memory of this at all. Only saw it upon purchasing the first season on dvd. In watching their stuff now, their work is genius! They're actually going to be touring the US in January!
This is why Jim Henson was truly amazing. Not just in his own artistic pursuits, but because he had a knack for finding interesting, clever performers and giving them exposure. Definitely one of the best episodes.
I think it goes without saying that the Mummenschanz are in a class all their own. When it comes to pantomime, they’re masters of the craft, and very few performers can match their level of creativity and delivery
Are you one of those guys who would argue about what MY OWN writing means and what I was thinking when I wrote it. Hell, I've had people tell me that I pronounce my own name wrong.
That's the thing. Everyone on here keeps saying "kids show" when the whole POINT of the Muppet Show was Jim Henson and his company wanting to make television for adults AND children and get away from the "puppets are for kids" stigma. The Muppet Show was never just a kids' show.
This is one of the few things I remember distinctly watching from the Muppet Show when I was a kid. I watched the Nickelodeon reruns back then. I don’t think I was old enough to fully understand just how brilliantly funny this group was. I was like many children and was a bit creeped out by them. As an adult they to me are kind of like a primitive version of the Blue Man Group. So awesome!
***** Nah, I just meant I'm fucking incompetent and everyone else is doing shit like it's easy while I just stand watching like "lolwtf?" Not edgy so much as self-deprecating, you know?
MentalMaladies The fact that you think everyone else is doing better than you is stupid considering most people don't even have access to the internet or basic human rights. Be grateful for what you have, and if you feel like failure, don't try to make yourself feel bad, because nobody else will. Do something to change, no one will do it for you.
Whoever called this scary is a New Gen. I find this very nostalgic. I remember watching that 15 years ago and died of laughter. My Core Memory has Unlocked!
Nah they’re just people who can’t appreciate art with comedy. It’s a shame how some of these people are so misunderstood just because of the art they want to perform ;-;
When I first saw this, I related it to kids at school with talents and the ones without it that compensate while trying to do the same things. But when the one with the straight face wrecked the sun on the other, that changed things.
This one just about KILLED me with laughter when I first saw it on 'The Muppet Show' back in '78! After watching it again, nothing has changed! Thanks for posting this classic bit!!
I remember this clay performance very well as a little child and I was laughing all over the floor. So happy I found it back on your channel, thank you so much!!!
When I first read the Claude Kipnis mime book I knew I would never reach the heights of mime and these people have, not better than Marcel Marceau who taught Claude Kipnis but very good, true masters and extremely creative. Well done.
Mummenschanz son lo más original que he visto. Absolutamente creativos. Siempre algo nuevo, más los clásicos que uno desea volver a ver, conforman espectáculos absolutamente deliciosos.
I am exactly FASCINATED by this! I talked about Mummenschanz with my mother and I sent this clip to her. It's so amazing to watch their talents onscreen. A group that combines dance, art, and acting has never been done before! I'm just so titillated by just seeing the talent and effort that they do! 😍😍😚❣ Edit: These comments are really talking about how amazed they are to see this, and with those, I can concur. (^w^)
Came here for a really cool "Scary Child Characters" top. For a child, this must have been terribly frightening. For an adult, it is amazing, beautiful and funny. Love it!
I remember the first time watching this at a friend's house. By 1:40 everyone was screaming in fear and covering their eyes and hiding behind furniture and also we were 20 years old and high.
I was just watching a Shileds and Yarnell video on youtube and saw this link for Mummenshanz which I vaguely remember from the same era as Shields and Yarnell, the 70's, thanks for posting, if I had these on DVD I'd watch them all the time.

When I was a kid, I remember feeling extremely uncomfortable when these weird clay faced humanoids just randomly appeared on one of my favorite shows. They didn't scare me per say but the way that looked combined with their lack of speech just unsettled the living crap out of me. In fact, this episode even gave me a disturbing dream revolving around the concept of bizarre episodes where a bunch of little realistic looking grey aliens randomly showed up on another one of my favorite shows back then (The Simpsons) and just awkwardly watched Homer drinking at Moe's Tavern.
wow! that was great! at first, the eyes kinda freaked me out a bit. masks in general are a bit offputting for me, but it was so engaging I watched it all the way through. I'm glad I did, i enjoyed it thoroughly! very effective
