This is a great video. I just bought a new 2023 Gold Wing, non DCT a month and a half ago. I did the first oil change myself and before draining the oil I checked the dipstick and it read over full. With this in mind I drained the oil, poured it into a graduated cylinder and it was 700 ml over full. This bothered me. I put in the specified amount and the oil level read perfect when checked according to the owners manual. I did mention this to the dealer and they claimed they did that on purpose in the event I ran the bike beyond the first service because all new bikes use oil. That bothered me even more.
By the way, i have learned a lot watching your videos! Always informative and covers lots of areas i have not cosidereed. I have owned Golwings since 2005 and am always looking for new info and ideas and products. Keep up the good work!
Great video, boss. This was something to see. I don't even know how to reply on this. It surly can damage the block. Wayyyyyy over fill. Its a big issue for many, checking the oil correctly. Why was it so hard for Honda to design a sight glass like on Yamaha. So easy to do an oil change. When I was told how you suppose to check it, I couldn't believe it. I am very tall, so I check mine sitting on it and I put a mini level on the air vent, by the windscreen.
Update on oil change. Yesterday, I siphoned 12 0z of oil from my wing and it now reads exactly correct. Next time I change the oil, I plan on draining it on the center stand like always, then puttting it on the sidestand to see if any more oil drains. I don't know of any other way to check it.
Another great design from Honda Motorsports, Motorcycle division. Bad location and replace procedure for the air filter. Same with the headlights. Poor design for checking engine oil. I don't remember my GL1500 procedure, but my 2004 GL1800 procedure is still dumb. Run the engine, let it set for a minute, remove dipstick, wipe it off, set it back in hole but do NOT screw it back on, pull it back out, check level on end of dip stick. If low, add oil and repeat. Honda cars are so much easier. What else did Honda engineers goof up on the Goldwing?
Holy S% Batman! Just changed my oil…going to double check my level RIGHT NOW!…Done. Yes, at 2 mins showed on the bottom index, at 3 mins just shy of top index.
Wow, I would not have thought a ~1 min would have been so extreme, I will follow alp3781's recommendation and check it at 2 1/2 mins... crazy that we would need to be so precise on a simple oil level check, I love my DCT, but this is silly!
I just changed my filter and oil this afternoon. I have a 2004 GL1800. I did it according to the service manual. I then changed out the final drive gear oil. After that, I went back and checked the oil dipstick and it shows that I have too much oil. WTH? So, do I drain off the excess for fear of damaging something by having too much oil or what?
Left the drain plug and oil filter off my Goldwing overnight to make sure it was completely drained. Next day I added the exact amount Honda says in the manual, 3.9 qts for mine. The dipstick shows over full by quite a bit. Any ideas?? After checking the manual again, I noticed it says to have the bike on the side stand when draining the oil. Would that account for the difference because it is not completely draining on the center stand?
Wow, that is a lot of oil. Yikes! Well, at least you got him underway.

Goldwings absolutely DO NOT "use oil"... that's absurd.
I checked oil properly at 500 miles, found that I was short 1/2 quart
@@richbenoit1840 then it was short from Day 1.
Thanks Max for all the information you provide to us the Goldwing community
Thanks Max, good info. Us older riders used to refer this tube to Old Choke and Puke .lol Spot on as usual! Fasteddie

I believe Honda says to wait 2-3 minutes after you shut the bike off. Not 3-5 minutes.
A couple extra minutes will not make a big difference.
I’ll stick with the factory recommendation.
@@but_but629 Yes, 2-3 mins on the clock. 3-5, you will read it wrong. You can check that, BTW. I set my phone to 2 1/2 mins then I check.
Wow! That's a crazy amount of oil.
Yes it was!

I doubt it, but maybe. Following their timing procedure is a big deal for reading the level.
Is yours a 6 speed?
Yes, a 6 speed manual......I've had goldwings for 20 years. Don't know why Honda went to this method of checking the oil. @@Traxxion
I followed it exactly as stated...@@Traxxion
So... it's self leveling?
Haha
Catch can? Do you have one for this bike?
That's 1970s Bro!
