    I got the Monologue first and I personally think it's the best beginner synth for the price. It's a more traditional design with the 2 oscillators. You can get anything from Church bell sounds to deep bass and Sci fi sounds. After a time I found myself able to know instinctively how to produce the sounds I wanted. The fact it runs on batteries and fits in a laptop bag is really handy. After about 6 months I got a Minibrute too(I did the arp to sequencer mod) which like the Microbrute is a very clever design but very different. I honestly think they are both keepers.

    In the beginning I hade a love-hate relationship with the microbrute... Everyone was talking high of the sequencer but I had some real problems with it... But once you get to know it... There is nothing better. Now I run my tr09 through it, get it to work with my eurorack system and the sequencer is off the hook... But it takes some time to love it

  • @BDistoshortforahandle
    @BDistoshortforahandle 7 років тому +5

    Nice comparison. I agree overall even though I have a microbrute. I got a microbrute a while back for $200 with absolutely no regrets. That being said, I think the monologue has a better filter (more versatile). But, I'm also getting into modular, which makes the microbrute a better option for expansion. The microbrute also is a usb to cv converter basically too (you might pay 200 bucks for a unit that does that alone!), but it doesn't have midi out like the monologue, so there are connection trade-offs. The microbrute has more "uniqueness" to it, but the monologue is more powerful in a more classic synthesizer way imo. Like mentioned, both are great options. It's a win-win situation for sure, but I think most people would be happier with the monologue for a first synth too, but some may find the microbrute a better fit. The filter on the monologue just has more range imo. The next Korg synth I buy will be the Minilogue probably though... Unless they make a PS-3000 series replica...Cheers

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  7 років тому +4

      Brandon D you definitely made the right choice since you're going Modular, as far as it's concerned the Microbrute + a eurorack setup is killer. I should have made a point of saying this in the video.

    • @powers_media
      @powers_media 7 років тому +2

      Brandon D micro brute has more character for sure. I bought it to encourage a faster path to modular. I also love the sequencer. it's great for building things quickly and in live p.a. improv.

  • @AndreyLebedintsev
    @AndreyLebedintsev 5 років тому +1

    I was deciding between these two synths and ended up buying a Monologue. The sound was the main reason. To my ears, Monologue sounds more modern and clean. Also I think that the range of different sounds it can produce is a lot broader than one of a Microbrute. Monologue might be less straightforward, but each time I discover a new hidden trick its functionality blows my mind.

  • @rdm5190
    @rdm5190 4 роки тому

    My 1st synth was a minikorg m700(bought used in1977) ...lol...so yea im an old guy but i also own both of these little guys. In my opinion they are two entirely different animals but both are very good little units.
    For learning the workflow and operation of a basic monosynth id have to say the minibrute has all the basic modules&no real bells&whistles like presets so you have to learn to engineer the sound from scratch.
    The miniloge has presets to give you a base sound to work from or modify which is also nice but starting from scratch is how you learn synthesis&how sounds are built.
    Either will give instant gratification out of the box,you just have to basicly decide if having presets is something you personally desire.

    I loved the video concise, and visual. I agree with the points you make, sound is better on the KORG, however you didn't mention the sequencers. I love the micro brute seq. With a firmware update you can change the microbrute sequencer so you can switch between sequences fluidly. This makes performing with it alot more fun than the fixed sequences on the KORG. The monologue does have the note on/off function but connecting sequences between patches can be clunky. What are your thoughts on the comparison of sequencers?

  • @calabiyou
    @calabiyou 7 років тому

    Nice speech. I wonder how the monologue compares to the minilogue. Personally i have the monologue, minibrute and beatsteppro. Sometimes I think the microbrute would be good but with the beatstep for sequencing I don't think I'm missing anything and I got an arp.

  • @easycoding8255
    @easycoding8255 7 років тому

    Yeah definitely agree. I had the Microbrute for about 3 years before I got my Monologue and haven't looked back. The soundscape is so much more rewarding from the Monologue, the portability is superior and I personally prefer the keys (coming from a pianist). I also think that the overlooked ability to use custom microtonal scales (with presets by Aphex Twin) is such a fantastic idea that is rarely offered on something for its price range. Excellent value for money.

    I picked up the micro brute for the modular capabilities, it's ability to get distorted/gnarly and it's over-all character. but I do love them both!! I still want a monologue because I LOVE the oscilloscope, it does pads better and the battery option is so cool for mobile rigs.

    I went Monotron Delay (very cool!), then Monotron Duo (cool also), then Volca Keys (rubs me the wrong way), then MicroBrute (rubs me the right way), then various midi controllers for DAW work....but I find myself coming back time and again to fiddle with the Arturia. For a contemporary, entry-priced analog monosynth with unique features and one knob per function, you will not regret the purchase or hours spent. It has character and is true to itself. I tried the Monologue briefly at Brooklyn Synth Expo and I think I would have also enjoyed that as well as my first real synth, but I feel ready to move on to something more advanced like a DeepMind 12.

    Hey nice analysis. I would definitely put the bass station 2 in this conversation. The main being reason than you can deconstruct patches thus learning how they were created due to the original value light which allows you to see where parameters were set in a particular patch. The BS2 can be bought new for not much more than these two as well. These are still obviously two great options as well. Cheers.

    Awesome video. It's really helpful for synth-noob like me. Now with your help I've decided between Microbrute and Monologue, it was though one, because in Poland both are in the same price range. But speaking of though decisions - I've planned as a begginer's set to buy Volca Keys + Volca Bass + Volca Beats + (and after this video) Monologue, but for the same price I can get Korg MS-20 Mini + Korg SQ-1. As I mentioned I'm new to the whole synthesizer thing (switching from bass guitar), and I don't want to be dissapointed, and gain new passion for synths. I will be grateful for your suggestion.

When you get it all together I hope you make some vids so I can check them out!!!

    The most important feature: an awesome Sequencer which even has Motion Capture. I'm pretty convinced that that's the one I want. I already have whatall to play notes & patches.

    Firstly, salutations to your channel's two-year anniversary of content, brother. I am relatively very new to the synth scene and examined the monologue , microbrute, and minilogue in depth. The Minilogue came out on top for this year's Black Friday sales. How do you feel about that synth versus the monologue, or other poly synths around its price range?

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  7 років тому

      Well thank you very much, 2 years later and when I started I never thought I'd even reach 1000 subs ever! Much appreciate all your support! Regarding the Minilogue, for the money I don't think there is even a competitor that offers the features and the polyphony. It's not the best polyphonic synth out there, but it's far and away the best polyphonic synth for the price!

    Phew...I am glad I ordered the Korg MONOLOGUE.
    I like the oscilloscope function.
    Although that is a gimic I like it.
    Monologue also does a big fat bass sound which I like.
    I think it was designed to get more out of monophonic notes than the Minilogue which should have been named the Polylogue?
    Brilliant video. Must have taken ages.
    Really well put together.

    I was in this predicament 5 months ago. Monologue or Microbrute? Monologue looked like it was winning because of the visual of the wave on the display and the pre sets. Then I saw the Sub Phatty so I asked about that. I was told it was a very good one to learn on and then upgrade to the Sub37. I just went away, raised the money and got the Sub37 and learned on that. Best decision I ever made on an instrument as far as I'm concerned. If I couldn't have raised the money though I probably would have gone for the Monologue as it's battery operated so it's portable, it has pre sets and can save patches. Best of all it's cheap and the best value for money

      BTW love you YT name! I think you made the best choice, while the Monologue/Microbrute are great synths, they're not at all the same instrument as the Moog Sub37, it's just superbly crafted, and will hold it's value for years to come!

      Korg Monologue, I tried the Volca modular, it’s a sorry excuse, feels like a buzz word cash grab. I’ll probably review the Volca modular someday, but I tried it and I didn’t get a “i want this” feeling, so yeah, there ya go!

    No comment on the sound of either, at any point..? What's the point in going analog, if you really want a big featureset?

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  7 років тому

      Mmmm, you're not wrong, the point of analog is something that some can't understand, is it purely nostalgia, does it sound better in "real world" use. It's a tool, I use plenty of soft synths, I just don't enjoy reviewing them. :)

  • @micindir4213
    @micindir4213 4 роки тому +1

    Had a chance to check out minilogue on a regular basis. A meh 50$ organ type-sound. Volca keys had better sound to be honest. It is analog, but cheap , bland sounding, plain tofu.
    Microbrute I've played 3 hrs straight when it arrived. My mind was fkn blown by how great it is designed. A truly player's synth. I can see it being used in some indie bands, at least one project could use it as a live tool. It has all the controls perfectly layed down. What a synth voice, wow. I never tough I'd be content with ONE oscillator, but here it is
    Monologue might be cooler than minilogue, but it's a tweaker's a synth. What korg has done right is a digital control system - its a real engineering treat right there.

    • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
      @RoomAtTheTopStudio 7 років тому

      buncho888 Maybe I can help with an opinion. The Arp Odyssey isn't an instant one. No presets, no saving of patches. You have to take photos of your settings when you find a sound. I don't even have one. I go to the music store to play it and I find some sounds on it every time that make me want it more and more. Native Instruments came in and stopped me buying it last month but I will be back to get it. I would say though that if you are a beginner and want a synth to switch on and use then the Arp Odyssey isn't for you. Personally I think the Arp Odyssey is better for someone who has had an analogue synth already and figured their way around it a bit so they have an idea of what they are now doing with the Arp. I won't hear a bad word said about it though. Korg got the sound exactly right with it and the slim keys aren't a problem to play. As a second synth after learning a bit about synthesis it's great

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  7 років тому +1

      I can agree with these statements Luke...I wouldn't mind reviewing it, but I just think it's cool looking, and not really one of their best efforts.

    • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
      @RoomAtTheTopStudio 7 років тому

      Noir Et Blanc Vie I would recommend you play with the Odyssey for a while before writing it off as not one of their best efforts. The Korg Arp Odyssey is a true recreation of the original sonically and cosmetically. Hats off to Korg on that one. It sounds amazing on bass. If you want a funky bassline this is the synth to do it. If you want sound effects, this is the synth to do it (ask George Lucas and R2D2) if you want leads this is the synth to do it. It's for those who want the retro sound of a Herbie Hancock or Stevie Wonder. I grew up with those sounds so to be able to play with them is what makes this synth a must have for me.

    In terms of timbre, both the Mini and Microbrute seem to be confined to a very small palette given the metallic oscillators and harsh steiner-parker filter. If you want their sound, then they're definitely worth getting- but I feel the Monologue has a lot more versatility in terms of its timbral usability.

    • @NoirEtBlancVie
      @NoirEtBlancVie  7 років тому +1

      Totally agree! I wish Arturia would polish the sound of the Mini/Micro...There's so much to work with here. They just needed something in the midrange, maybe around the $700 mark that really ironed out all the issues while still keeping it true to the sound of the Brute line.

      Monologue’s Sequencer is fantastic, monologues sound is good, not as thick as Arturia stuff. It’s a trade off, though maybe the Minibrute 2 has a better sequencer

  • @longfade

    Another terrific review. I always thought that, if I ever decided to teach (I never will) synthesis, I'd not hesitate to buy a handful of minilogues as they've always seemed the perfect hands-on jumping off point for a newbie. I guess the monologue might be an even better choice for something like that. Hats off to Arturia, but I haven't played their hardware synths so can't weigh in there.

    I hope Im not too late commenting on this video but I have a pertinent question that maybe more people new to synths may have . In short, Im hesitant to buy a MONOPHONIC synth. Not only because playing chords is out of the question but Im afraid playing melodies might result in notes canceling other notes out when ''accidentally' playing notes simultaneously. I hope this makes sense. Anyway, I was wondering if you have any experiences with this . I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks! Youu do a wonderful job on you vids BTW!
