  • Today I take a look at the High Command module. This is both an editor tutorial as well as a high command tutorial.

    Q:What are your system specs?
    A: i5 Ivy Bridge 3570k; 120 gig SSD; 1tb Standard HD(for recording); 8 gigs ram; nVidia Geforce GTX 560ti (I run ArmA anywhere between 20-60 FPS, on med-high settings)
    Q: What do you use for recording?
    A: Fraps for video and system audio; Audacity for personal audio.
    Q: Why don't you play in First Person?
    A: I'm a 3rd person gamer. I hate first person. It's unrealistically restricting. Please don't try to "convince" me otherwise as if I am unaware of the gaming style I prefer.
    Q: Were you in the Military?
    A: US Army 99-06, Radio Operator(25C). Non-Combat Veteran.
    Q: Is that AI or real people?
    A: If it's Wasteland or DayZ, it's real people. If it's an ArmA Mission it's AI unless I very specifically state otherwise. The 15th doesn't PvP.
    Q: What ArmA mods do you use?
    A: For ArmA 2 - ACE/ACRE are the core. Others include: DFS 3rd Person, Instantviewdistance, SMK Animations Lite, ST_Collision and ST_Evasive, and Blastcore WarFX. For sound: Vanilla mixed with JSRS.
    For ArmA 3 - Will change often as mods are released.
    Q: Can I join your unit?
    A: 15th MEU Realism Unit: www.15thmeu.net The 15th is always recruiting(Must be 17 or older)
    Q: When will the 15th switch over to ArmA 3?
    A: When it has all modern USMC assets modded in. Hopefully "soon"™.

      @@Jester814 know this is some serious necro but its a shame they never bothered to fully impliment high command. Considering you cant issue orders out side of the map all the options are greyed out

    Squad leaders do assign targets even when they are under your command and leading your men. The insufficiency of it depends on how much the AI is aware of the situation. For example, if you send a squad into a enemy town and they lack any knowledge their is enemy units in there. Then chances are they will get caught out in the open unless ordered into combat mode earlier. Just think of the AI as soldiers who never read the briefings. When you order them into a hostile town, to them its simply a town, so they will stroll into it as if its empty unless they see someone to fight. However if they are aware by say a spotter marking enemy positions, you will find the team leaders working to make sure his troops clear out the enemy in the best manner AI can manage. Often times that micromanaging players do isn't neccary making the AI react faster. All your doing is clicking on the last know location of the enemy, and the AI will shift focus on looking for the target again. Which can be as simple as the guy simply shifted to a rock near his last know location. If you want a good example of this, have a AI armor group attack a town, but give that armor group 2 well hidden spotters so they constantly update the map with the enemy contacts. This is particularly important to vehicles since they have the worse of all tunnel vision, and you find your armor far more effective at acquiring targets that way.

    Yes they will do this and it's nice, but if you want an infantry only group you're kind of boned. A trick you might be able to do is put a manned transport truck in with the infantry group and make their waypoint a "full dismount" waypoint("Unload" I think?). And see if the driver will dismount with that. Otherwise you're going to have some dude driving around a transport truck in the middle of a battle.

    You can actually select their behavior under TYPE. So it is possible to put them in Aware/Danger/Relaxed. It's also possible to select their speed (Fast, Limited etc.). I guess you know about this but I just wanted to add this since you didn't showed it in the video! Thanks for the good work Jester :). High Command is really awesome!

    Get in/out & Load/unload only seems to work if the APC is part of the subgroup. Get in/out includes the crewmen as well. This module really needs a way to delay execution of orders until construction of orders is complete.

    Unless they have a vehicle in their group by default. You can put a HEMMIT in their group and they'll utilize it, but the driver won't ever get out so they'll have a cargo truck following them around in combat.

    Both, BI only adds content for their own campaign ofc. But we dont know what the campaign will contain yet. Other than that its up too the mission makers too add content basiclly. No point in BI wasting time adding random content.

    How did you make it where you can use your voice for command? is that with high command?

    I have been wondering why bohemia doesn't fix this. It was like this in Arma 2, also. They need to be just a touch smarter. Whenever they are supposed to move a long distance, they should automatically get in any vehicles that have been ordered to go near the same point. Also, if they started out with a vehicle in their group, like a hummer or Mrap for a fireteam, they should occupy it automatically if they are told to move a very long way and if they are told to move at full speed.

    i have a mission where i move three big teams ( 17units each) some long distances, it just take some time to manage the waypoints to make sure the hewitts dont brake down. keep a repair guy in your own squad.

    the best way to move your highcommands unit is to place a emty hewitt down and give the teamleader a get in waypoint. then you have to place a get out waypoint. all units disembark including the driver.

    if y wont a jet under your command, make sure he's spawns flying. if y want to land him give him a get out waypoint at the runway, to get him airborn again give him a get in wayoint near the jet and then another one.

    Infantry will automatically get in their vehicles to move long distance if they're part of a motorized/mechanized group.

    it works with emty choopers aswell the problem is when the team discovers enemies ( chooper does) he will fly in that direction no matter what and try to engage, even if it is a transportchooper.

    It's nice when you are using VAC, but personally I can't believe BI didn't change the command UI (unit command in general) since original OFP, I am very disappointed with the UI/UX in the game in general almost nothing changed in the past 12 years.

    obviously human players are always gona be better/smarter and more creative enemies than the AI is, but given the scenario creator knows how to employ the AI correctly, it can give you a decent challenge. The AI also can fill in roles in scenarios that would be boring for human players (or would not work with players filling them, depending on the mindset of said players).

    I didn't bother reading every single comment but I assume you saw that you used "Get Out" instead of "Get In" when trying to get the fire team to enter the vehicle in high command.

    I think the Create Task only works In MP because then the other units in said groups under HC will receive the task

    To do that we need High Command Extension mod working in Arma 3. Hopefully it will be available soon.

    Jester, very nice video. I just try one mission that use the high command. If you haven't try it, I would be nice if you make a video playing it and provide some guide. I found very complicated, but I'm kind of new to Arma anyway. The mission name is "Road to Redemption"

    There are some scripts which simulate suppression (for example: IF shot near EI THEN prone and accuracy -20%). But obviously you'll never be able to give them human like behavior. BI implemented a lot of new features in ArmA3 for AI but obviously the AI is never going to be perfect. I guess it would be possible to make scripts which tell them to look at doors but I don't know if anybody did this already.

    it works with the unload waypoint but you will have the truck moving along and driving over your soldier after the unload. only way i found out is that y can disable the transporttruck.

    I've had a play with this and will probably use it in the single player mission I'm doing at the moment instead of having loads of AI with synchronised triggers/waypoints. Less to go wrong. Shame about the random units running around when the squad leader dies, as I would like to get them clear before blowing stuff up. As it is they will either get killed or left behind.

    Units in the same groups will enter their vehicles only if either safe or long distance travel. i dont know about getting other groups into other groups vehicles

    there's also that "interact" option if you have a unit selected and hover over another unit, which would logically be the way to make them mount into a separate vehicle. But it's always grayed out. so I don't know what's going on there.

    And what happens, when you not put Vehicle and Infantrie in different groups but in one (like our german Panzergrenadiere) - will the Infantrie independent mount/dismount and fight together with his Vehicle?
    That would solve at least the transport problem.
    Although it probably leads to problems in urban warfare… :/

    I know this is one of your older videos but Im kind of a new comer to Arma and I love it. I've been trying to figure out how to utilize artillery and mortars. Is that something I have to set up with the supports modules in the editor or can it be used in game without it? I havent found any info anywhere.

    My one question popped into my head after watching this video, is it possible to use the high command function to give more than one person high command control? It would make for a good mission for a group co-op if everyone had control over a platoon, for example... This way it would allow for a little less micromanagement perhaps?

      Would make it more realistic to give everyone command of their own infantry squad, with attached transport and support vehicles - and you could have someone commanding a tank squadron - assuming it is possible in the editor?
      I've not used it yet - only recently had a PC capable of playing ArmA3

    Please please. Put yourself on the backseat of a Ghosthawk with High Command. Do a sunrise assault on some city with APCs and one IFV, and Jet Air Support against Enemy Attack Choppers

    Im using High Command Module, and subordinate. But still all bluefor units on the map fall under the commander command. Even tough i want to limit it to only 5 groups.
    Also everyone gets the high command. Not only the one i synced it to.

    14:45 - Does that no also unload the entire Helicopter crew? I believe you have to use the "Transport unload" waypoint.

    So if you can't get infantry to board vehicles unless they are in your group your pretty much screwed if you want to play with a lot of infantry squads and transport them over distances?

    Hey Drumheller--ive watched almost all your videos, love em. I always wonder about AI behavior As opposed to player or realistic behavior. I see your unit "suppressing" AI, but do they know they are suppressed? I see AI units in rooms, where as you are clearing, they are facing the wall, not the door. Have you or anyone else examined AI combat behavior in a video? Or how much control the mission author has over their behavior? Thanks, sincerely.

    Excellent tutorial on HC! Can you switch back and forth between commander and squad leaders under command (via HC)?
    I seem to.lose HC capability after switching back and forth between commander and squad leaders. Am I missing something?

    1 more--Ive seen "suppressed" AI stand straight up and turn in place, gun down. And Ive rarely seen AI use 'nades.

    It's just a stopgap measure, till we can get hundreds of human players to fill maps the size of Arma.

    This is great if I am making my own missions... However, when in an existing sp or mp mission, is it possible to dynamically assign, reassign, or switch units between normal command and high command? If my 8 unit squad commandeers a tank, can I move that driver/tank to high command or take a high command unit and re-populate my personal squad?

    Is it possible to have a high commander on both sides? A 1v1 multiplayer match, for example, with both players commanding their armies? I've tried simply linking up both playable soldiers on both sides with their armies. When I host the match, I can command from either side, but the other player is always unable to.

    Jester. Do you know how to make it so if a blufor enters a grid. The grid will turn one color. And if opfor entered. The grid would turn another color.

    I don't seem to be able to create a chain of command. I tried making an AI a lieutenant, and giving him multiple squads as a commander in HC, but he does not move them with him, when I give him move orders in my HC. Also, his symbol does not correspond with the platoon symbol.

      +Hans Merken make sure you outrank the lieutenant... if your an NCO your LT wont budge. lol
