Hi everyone! In this video we are finally covering false fold control. The false vocal folds are a secondary pair of tissue that sit above the true vocal folds. We can control these to achieve a variety of different sounds by constricting or retracting them. This video gives a comprehensive overview of what this vocal control does, why it's useful, what it feels like, ear training to hear the sounds, and 4 approaches for both constriction and retraction. This lesson will be beneficial for vocalists of all backgrounds, skill levels, and target goals.

21:00 3 Key Uses for False Fold Control
    23:06 Conclusion
One of the most common mistakes in voice feminization is accidental constriction of the false folds during the increase of resonance. If when practicing the "voiceless R1" exercises you find your voice is harsh, doesn't start properly, or get's blocked -- it's likely a constriction problem. Those who have undesirable constriction in their voice can remedy the problem by gaining awareness of this and applying active retraction to offset the constriction. Additionally, those who wish to further feminize or hyperfeminize the glottal behavior will find retraction especially beneficial as it reduces effective supraglottal mass, boosts thinness, increases ease of onset, and slightly alters resonance by narrowing the epilaryngeal space.
Constriction sounds audibly grainy, rough, tense, pinched, and in some cases husky or elderly. It’s often uncomfortable to maintain and can cause vocal fold irritation. It signals to a listener that the speaker is applying effort, straining, or exerting themselves. In contrast, added retraction offers a purer, cleaner, and sweeter sound quality. It’s very gentle on the vocal folds and can decrease vocal fatigue.
After gaining control and awareness, return back to previous vocal exercises you’ve learned from and apply this newfound awareness. Pay close attention to any traces of constriction and work to remove it (unless aesthetically desired). Introduce any degree of retraction you want. Make sure to apply this to the voiceless R1 exercises by trying to keep the air stream relaxed and retracted.
    warmly,

@@TransVoiceLessons What are your thoughts regarding inhaled vocalization? It's often used to imitate pig squeals/dinosaur noises (heavy constriction, relatively high pitch, and incredibly deep resonance, inhaled). I'm well aware that extreme volume/duration (i.e. performance) can cause some serious damage, but is there any risk if done in relative moderation?

  • @vivianangel5873

This helps with singing range in my experience as well. Retracting your false folds as you approach a high note can help you hit it in tune without straining. I'd also say that retracting the false folds is one of the most useful ways you can sound more feminine as you sing, although it's challenging to avoid abducting the true vocal folds at the same time, which makes one sound breathy, especially in the lower register. Great stuff as always, Z!

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 роки тому +10

Absolutely! Retraction of the false folds really helps so much -- increased range, increased sustain, lighter quality, etc. It's true that it can be difficult for some to find adequate true fold engagement while heavily retracted. It's a fun balancing act! Thanks for your post! :D

“Smiling with the throat” was particular helpful Z, I have been speaking over an intercom quite a bit lately and have been noticing the kinesthetic relationship between open throated sounds and close throated sounds. Having to yell is a particular challenge, and the grunting sounds that come out while catching a barbell are a firm reminder: I have to practice loosing my face during that catch anyway, so why not just keep it loose all day?

Just to share: I lost my voice to a whisper 5 years ago (at age 54) to really bad laryngitis. My complete voicelessness lasted for 1 week, but I knew something was not right with my voice when I could talk again. I could not get back to singing normally. After a whole year, I could horribly sing at the lower register (I could not sing at the higher register (F4 and above). After yet another year, I could strain but reach notes up to F4. I pretty much lost my joy and desire to sing. I tried "everything" from seeing 3 otolaryngologists (all of them said that my vocal folds were fine), speech therapy, to throat massage, to pills and potions... but my voice still wasn't the same. My last ditch effort was to try voice lessons from a classically trained voice teacher (an hour every week for 12 weeks), although I sing pop/rock. My vocal folds slowly started getting stronger again with some stamina. But I always tried to tell everyone that I "feel" like there's something above my vocal folds that flap around and kill my tone, but no one addressed it. I browsed a LOT of video clips about voice problems until last week, I ran into someone talking about false vocal folds, which are "above" the vocal folds! I explored the videos and tried to patch in ideas as I saw them. Then watching your video, I was so impressed! You had the most complete and organized information I had ever seen about this topic. I so very much thank you for posting it. I will follow your tips and hopefully, I can get back my range somehow... from B2 to A5 (chest to mixed voice). Wish me luck! And more power to you! God bless...

I love your work, it's streets ahead of any of the other voice feminization stuff I've come across. Now if I could just find the motivation to start practicing again!

Hahahahaha I love you so muuuuuuuch. Everything in these videos is just amazing, your delivery, your presence, your voice, your modulation, your explanation, the visual aids, the text, the little musical interludes/piano bits for the titles, just everything. I'm just a confused dude who likes to crossdress in private sometimes and I'm merely curious about voice at the moment, but if I lived alone or didn't expect any questioning I'd try the exercises out, because they do look fun to do, plus the thing being taught is also very interesting.

Thank you very much for this! Understanding the anatomy and how this stuff actually works helped me tremendously, not only for voice, but even for my flute playing! This has removed a major block that I had. I knew I was too tense but didn't really understand what that meant or how to resolve it, what exactly it was that I needed to relax. 'Twas mine false folds! Thankies verily!

I have been watching your videos for a while now and tried to implement things as much as I could. But before this video nothing seemed to work or feel right. When watching this video, something finally clicked and I can now maintain a female voice! I don't love the voice right now but it might actually be a passing voice! I still need to do some more practice but this feels like a huge accomplishment! Which is great since the video I watched before this was the 7 secrets for achieving voice goals and such and those small accomplishments are progress! Thanks so much for all you do!!!

This stuff is soo interesting. i definitely constrict when modifying resonance, and I've always wondered why i sound great sometimes and other times constricted, not knowing what i was doing differently. I've definitely learned to speak by mimicry. So much to think about! (thank you!)

I was wondering if at some point you could give some examples of less extreme false fold constriction. Of course it’s useful to have more obvious examples at first, but I feel having more subtle examples of the constriction, specifically constriction associated with attempts at raising R1, would be super useful as well. Anyways, love your videos and all your stuff on Patreon as well, all the work you do is so awesome and has totally transformed my approach to training my voice!

I have just found your clips and have followed your them from the oldest to the newest. As always the clips are concise, informative, and your presentation is professional. Your voice is pleasant and encouraging. I see that there are a few dislikes on most of the clips. Apparently the dislikes refer to the subject matter, because the presentation is always impeccable. The subject is one that definitely needs to be addressed by someone with personal experience. I have watched others try to teach the same things. While the material is factually correct, their methodology is usually far less precise than yours. I especially like the use of the clips with the Friture, the Isotope Ozone 5, or the Speech Tracker as you talk. It demonstrates perfectly what you are teaching. Keep up the good work, and thank you.

Oh so THIS is what I'm feeling, I intuited this by accident! Although I am hoping to masculinize my voice instead, but I do want it to feel open and clear and natural. It makes me feel like a have a lot more space to increase my resonance in
Edit to add: It felt like I was "opening" the very back of my tongue, that extends down the throat, but I'm now realising that these are my false folds!

Omg! This is what my problem is. I was feeling strained quickly and this sort of annoying croakyness to my voice. But some times I got this smooth voice and I could not nail down what I was doing right and why it so quickly snapped back into strain mode. Like a smile in your throat... Being aware of this will not fix it over night. But now I know what to hear and feel for. Practice, practice, practice. It is fun though, when there are results.
Thanks! You are hands down the most impressive voice coach I have ever seen. You are one clever multi talented chick!
