Admittingly, social media and basic internet sources actually helped my reading. Because I struggled with American English upon being adopted from Russia in September/October 1994, and it just took forever for me to grasp American English, and my adoptive family had no sense how alien American English was, they just assumed I would learn the language effortlessly. Even now, my reading abilities are the equivalent of a low level middle schooler, so I pretty much realize that basic internet sources may actually be stepping stones to figure out the structure of the language, and how author conveys ideas because the American English is simple enough to be able to read. However, I didn't even have a sense of this until I was about 21/22 years old, despite coming to America in '94 at almost 5 years old. That's how long it took me to even navigate written text. So.. when it comes to folks learning English, I've just come to accept that internet is a huge breakthrough for language acquisition. Without internet, I could not advance as much as I have. I was in prison without the internet. I felt trapped. Even now, I actually watch videos, because the English is more conversational, the kind of English I appear to grasp better. I can talk to myself and engage with the author or authors and learn vocabulary even now, then talk out my ideas with new English I still appear to be learning. Hmm. It appears even now, I'm still learning English as if my Russian past never left. I may be advanced in English, but advanced within the context of English learning. I still seem to be an English language learner. It's weird.
Nice video! I think one of the biggest challenges in our education system today is that children aren't necessarily learning how to be critical readers who discern what is good information and misinformation. In many ways, we're prioritizing test scores over encouraging children to be curious, thoughtful, discerning members of society. And that's a problem.
Developmental Enthusiast Indeed, the emphasis on testing is not doing anyone much good. Yet, before digital media, many people believed that, if it is in print, it must be true. It seems today many believe the web is always a reliable source, which is even farther from the truth. I'm always hopeful, though. I trust that educators will continue themselves learning how to put technology to good use and teaching young learners to be critical readers and critical users of the available technology. Thanks for watching and participating in the discussion!
Sir I agree with the idea which says that the problem in not in Technology itslef but in the way we use it ....If we use it in the right way we will benifit a lot from it ....Personally I find it very helpful especially in my studies ...and your channel is a major example for that !!
haha When I created this video, I thought: "Well, of course I think technology is a great tool for learning; otherwise, I wouldn't be putting all this effort into this channel!" I'm glad you find it helpful! :D
That is very true. If students only stick to online blurbs, they're limiting their knowledge and not getting enough practice... as I mentioned in the video, we can only hope that people see the snippets of information online and take an interest to read more. It's a process and it takes time... Cheers! :D
Thanks to technology I can encounter your video. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you so much for the video and information attached, which are so helpful to my study. (I'm an EFL from Taiwan.) Please share more to us!
Doctor, from my experience, it seems that life has become so fast-paced that reading seems to be a crutch rather then a learning experience. I come from an age where reading was actually done in the library and reading was done out of one set of books, i.e. Encyclopedias. I am in agreement that reading with modern tech should be used as an appetizer rather than the main course. I do see social media as crippling our children's ability to enjoy reading because games are becoming more in vogue instead of the learning. I don't read on my smartphone because the screen is too small. I lot of the things we learned in school, like cursive writing, has been seemingly removed from schools. I have seen some writing by our children that seems to boggle my mind. We had no Google, internet, or internet cafes, nor even a Starbucks. I actually long for the good old reading days, but I know it is just a memory. JMO.
Indeed, things have changed, but they have always been changing, and so the technologies we use in our daily lives. The constant is that mankind has been finding new ways to disseminate information from writing on clay tablets to digital tablets and from storing information in physical libraries to storing information in digital libraries. I'm not a historian, but I would bet that there have always been ways to use emerging technologies poorly. There are ways to misuse what we see today with the internet, social media, computer technologies, and so on; at the same time, these technologies have also been extremely beneficial in disseminating information. Years ago, getting your hands on information could take days or be impossible for some. Today, we have quick access to information practically in real time. Physical libraries still play an important role as trained librarians can help people navigate effectively the vast amounts of existing and quickly changing information--some good, some awful. It is difficult to see exactly how today's technology will "find its way." We will have to wait one or two generations to have a broader view of what is or isn't a good thing. In the meantime, I enjoy the good things the technology and try to be alert to the possible pitfalls. We will have to wait and see... Thanks for watching and the well thought out comment!
Reproevolution - People are becoming slower due to the reliance on technology. That is the plan for greedy elites to stay in control, and in power. It is like we are living in a sci-fi movie where advanced technology will end up controlling, and having power over people, places, and things.
In technology today has lots variety of information you can read, however it's a very thin line gaps how to distinguish the information if it is accurately correct or fake information. But to use our critical thinking in reading information from technology it helps a lot.
Exactly! It's a fine line, but we should always question information, especially if it seems "off" and verify it. We have a lot more in the "Critical Reading" playlist at ua-cam.com/play/PLS9dE7WMFmJgeCVVM8RR09gRYS9zgXkVg.html Thanks for watching and leaving a comment :D
Cool, I made the video! I love the part when you question whether internet reading is "gateway drug" to reading and learning? I definitely agree with you about digital formats being a great starting point but how often do you think people actually follow up their online "appetizers" with a "main course" of in-depth reading? I know I'm guilty of simply clicking the next link on more than one occasion. Lot's to think about here. Great content.
Kevin Fabris When I say "leave a comment" and "let's start a conversation" in my videos, I really mean it! LOL As for gateway drugs and appetizers, I think that anything "could" lead to further learning. As an educator, I try not to simply rule anything out as junk or a time waster... Imagine if someone had told Einstein he should stick with patents rather than waste time thinking about the nature of the Universe! Thank you very much for sharing the video and for participating in the discussion!
Kevin Fabris I'll chime in here and say that I'm actually pretty hopeful that using the internet (especially specific types of content) as "gateway drugs" to more learning is feasible. There are several content creators on UA-cam who I think who are able to engage viewers (especially young viewers) in learning about a topic in a way that whets the appetite for more learning (CrashCourse, SciShow, and VSauce come to mind). I think engaging our natural human curiosity in order to stimulate learning is key.
Hello, I am doing research for my master's degree on social networks and their effects on reading comprehension, and I would really like to include this video as a data collection instrument, would you give me the authorization?
Hi, Magaly. That sounds like an interesting topic! How cool!- Of course you can use the video. In fact, any of materials on UA-cam and on my website are considered "published" materials. You can use them as long as you follow the usual copyright rules. All the best with your academic work!
I as a student believe technology help me a lot in many ways like learning maths from Khanacademy and preparing for SAT online. I don't think otherwise I will be able to learn and get knowledge like wathing your videos for SAT reading !
That's great! I am all for technology myself. I truly believe that it all depends on how you use it. You can use it as a time waster, or you can use it to improve yourself. Glad to hear you are in the latter group! :D
Internet is a double eagle sword .if you Know how to use rationally , you will certainly benefits from it but if you're an addicted to it just because of Chating and enjoying your Time ,you will end up with many disapointments .i guess that the internet makes students lazier than befor because they relay tottaly on it ,so they don't make any efforts themselves
True. Any new technology is a double edged sword. It often makes our lives easier, but people will always find a way to "screw it up" :lol Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I hope you're enjoying the rest of the channel!
Well, I agree that people can make any type of technology work against them. But that's why we, as consumers of technology, should be "smart" about how we use it and avoid falling into technological black holes. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! :D

A person has to definitely read books, I have seen students in class who don't read much and fail at exams because of it.Its very sad to see.

i think we are becoming slower due to reliance on tech, in the summer i might do a cleanse so i can regain more focus and control of mind.
WaellaBanke ....l agree.

I think the technology is helping some how ,because you will save more time to go out and search for some thing you need to know about it
Well, I believe it all depends on how someone chooses to use it. You can use technology as crutches and time waster... or as a tool and time saver :)
