This episode really made me and my musician brother nerd out for hours when we first watched it, because so many things happen in that one moment Bocchi starts jamming out that solo it's insane. First that she's naturally doing something that many musicians do to save a poor live performance, which is to reset the tone. Basically a musical version of snapping everyone out of their funk, tell them to forget their mistakes, and just try again. That tactic has saved many a show that was starting to bomb. Bocchi also for the first time plays to a strength she hasn't been able to tap into her entire time while being in the band, which was how good she plays when she plays alone and for herself. It says in the first episode her biggest weakness was trying to follow along with other band members, and she's getting rid of that weakness by being the one to take point and set the tempo for the band to follow. You can even see all the band members look at her to reference and control their own playing. You also see Bocchi do something that you haven't seen her do while performing live, which is shut off that mind of hers that's usually spinning a thousand miles an hour analyzing others and herself. She just enters that flow state where there's nothing in the world but her, her guitar, and the music. The lyrics of the song even reflect this, talking about shutting off the overwhelming noises of the world around her and going only by her own rhythm and sound. So in that one moment she demonstrated that while she may suck at following other people's tune, almost like trying to shove a boulder around, she can instead make a tune that others can follow, and it cemented her as the new foundation for her band. It gives that "Bocchi the Rock" nickname such a great multi-layered meaning.
And from a mental/emotional place, it's also really cool because it shows that while Bocchi has struggled a lot to get where she is, those struggles have built up a habit of perseverance and "pushing-through" that the other band members don't have to the same extent. Her secret is that she's always anxious... this is nothing different to Bocchi at this point and she pushes through just like she has in the past.
That "Flow state" comment is totally on point. You even see that when the song is over, Bocchi looks up like she doesn't even really know where she is at that moment, she was so immersed in the music. And I love how she rips that final chord and then lets the amp hum for a couple of seconds. So bad-ass!
I remember when i first watched this, the first song somehow did not hit as hard as it did during the audition... and then I found out they literally recorded a version of the song with mistakes in it. Which is so cool, it adds to the set up for the second song as a comeback so well.
I think they said that they didn't really record a version with mistakes, but that that was just their first try at playing the song and that's how it came out

That conversation between Nijika and Bocchi at the end is literally magic. The warm light coming from the Izakaya behind them as they are looking out into the cool night puts them in this twilight state between the warmth of their success and the dark unknown of their future (but a future that is filled with bright stars of hope in spite of being unknown). Then when Nijika says she realized that Bocchi is Guitar Hero, this breeze that blows from Nijika to Bocchi is as if a magic spell has spoken a hidden truth into being and the world has forever changed because of it. That whole scene is just amazing!
13:35 Kita was embarrassed comparing her name to Seika, which is written with the characters for "star" (星/hoshi/SEI) and "song" (歌/uta/KA). Because Kita Ikuyo is a punny name that, depending on context, can mean several similar things but mostly sounds like "You're here (you came/arrived), let's go!"
Technically, it probably wasn't intentionally made a punny name in-universe (of course the author did it intentionally), but Ikuyo is a bit of an old-fashioned name. All of the Kessoku Band members have the same surnames as Asian Kung Fu Generation, so Kita is just named after one of them and it's a normal name. It unfortunately just sounds like, "I'm here (kita can mean came, but doesn't denote a pronoun by itself), let's go!" For comparison, a name like Sirius Lee in English that sounds punny and old fashioned.
The tracks played by them are ""Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet" which is written by Zaq and has it's own great lyric video and the second song is "That Band" written by Ai Higuchi Both are performed by Kita's Va : Ikumi Hasegawa
This is my fav episode of the series. From Bocchi's fans coming to watch her play during a crazy storm, Bocchi stepping to the plate when the band needed it, to the title drop and everything in between. Was so good. Can't help but root for them.
5:15 it's not just that the energy is missing. they are all over the place in their playing. Kita's voice is unsteady and slightly off-key, and the timing between them all is completely off. no way to sugar-coat it, during that first song, they 100% sucked. kudos to whoever produced the music, because they nailed it in making them sound like a band on the brink of falling apart on stage.
Just caught the little detail that the restorative effect that Karaage has on Bocchi that was shown in episode 7 wasn't lost on Nijika. When everyone sees that Bocchi's battery is so low that she's turned into a husk, Nijika mentions that she's thinking of ordering Karaage when she ask Bocchi what she wants to eat and, sure enough, at the mention of Karaage, Bocchi starts coming to. I don't think Nijika mentioning Karaage at that moment was an accident. Just goes to show that this anime has details to pick up on even after you've watched it multiple times.
5:25 I like the visual detail here of the performance being off. Bocchi's fans want to be supportive, but they can't even properly bob along to the beat because the tempo is a mess.
This episode, oh my word. The song performances were brilliant. My first time watching this episode I noticed how off the first one was and thought something was wrong with me, only for it to come round and show off just how much Bocchi, and the band as a whole has grown. The songs in this show are great, I really recommend you listen to the full Kessoku Band album. Nijika is my favourite character in this series not because of this episode but especially due to this episode. Their conversation was so sweet and THAT TITLE DROP. I saw a clip of Bocchi taking over the 2nd song, and that made me very curious that I started watching this show. Very good episode!!
There is a manga which covers Nijika and her sisters story...As well as a manga which is an off shoot of this show which follows Kikuri's story.
