For Context: Ken Takakura was a Japanese actor, known for a brooding style who did a lot of Yakuza movies. Think Japanese Clint Eastwood. This is not him, the show I believe takes place modern day Japan, Ken Takakura died in 2014. But due to his fame, Ken is a popular boy name for Japanese babies

They made it clearer in the manga so IDK why they didnt in the anime but Ken Takakura was a famous Japanese actor. Known for being a tough guy with a heart of gold or "hardboiled". In the manga they make it clear by showing posters of his movies when Momo talks about him making it clear hes a celebrity. Occult Kun aka Ken Takakura just happens to have the same name as him. Like if you met someone name John Wayne and also happened to be a huge fan of old John Wayne movies.
Based on what I've seen, anime has stricter copyright rules than manga... so they'd probably have to get the rights to show him. Same reason multiple references to other things are slightly changed in the anime compared to the manga.
It's funny she mentioned the "these writers just put everything in one show", because the mangaka literally did that. He kept making mangas that never got popular, then his editor challenged him to read shoujo manga, and to just write about whatever comes to mind. Needless to say, a masterpiece of wildness was created lol
Dandadan is full of pop culture references, particularly from 80s-90s Japanese stuff, folk tales, superstitions, with a sprinkle of other stuff from other countries too (like UFOs). You two are in for a treat.
Yukinobu Tatsu; The author/ mangaka of Dandadan was an assistant for the very popular unapologetic mangaka of chainsaw man and Fire Punch. Tatsu got his unapologetic presentation came from that experience.
I can disagree because context is needed. Dandadan does have uncomfortable scenes but at least they are warranted and actually relates to the plot and story. Like there is a reason alien are after human bodies for experiments that isn’t some wild thing but a normal troupe. And the ghost granny wasn’t the way she was for no reason. Dandadan isn’t one of those shows that has explicit or perv scenes just because. The thing that sets it apart from that troupe is that it’s endearing and the show/characters don’t treat explicit things like it’s casual. But anything can be taken out of context not just anime. You can say the same for any live action show with explicit scenes like GOT, YOU, Bridgerton for example. It’s just the fanbases that make it weird and clip shows that make it seem worse than it is. There are anime(basically hentai or 70% fanservice ) like that but Dandadan isn’t that.
Another fun fact: The walk Momo does in the school at the beginning of the episode is based off of Doflamingo from one piece. You’ll see him soon if you’re not already there on patreon!
The three Cellpo Aliens are voiced by Kazuya Nakai, a VA best known for his role as Zoro in One Piece. When he first performed his three voices in rehearsal, the other VAs couldn't contain their laughter 😂

That's one of the manga series I've read since the first chapter, where I can say, "I've seen this series being built brick by brick" and fell in love with it from the start. It brings me so much happiness to see this become an animated series and have you two reacting to this. Believe in me when I say this series became one of the more popular in Japan for a very good reason: It's peak writing, character development, and comedy.

Coming from someone who is 140 chapters into the manga, Yukinobu Tatsu has created something so fun, creative, romantic and epic so far.

Ken Takakura is a very famous Japanese actor. As you can see, there are some elements in this anime that only Japanese people or people who are familiar with Japan can understand right away. It's also a lot of fun to look up those elements every time.
Interesting tidbit I like is that Okarun is played by Natsuki Hanae who voices Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer. However an even better tidbit is the voice of Turbo-Granny which is Mayumi Tanaka who also voices our favorite pirate captain Luffy!!!!!

It's great to watch Dan Da Dan and Frieren together. One is calm and sweet. Everything is serene. And the other is endlessly crazy.
