    How to make a mixtape in Ableton?
    This is a follow up video on the one that I did about making a mixtape live versus software.
    In THIS video I’ll show you step by step how to make a dj mixtape in Ableton Live
    Let’s take it away
    [BUMPER]
    [2]
    If you like the content consider supporting me on patreon.
    My name is Dexxter clark and I do reviews vlogs and tutorials about djing and producing.
    You can also subscribe to my mailinglist, you get my videos in your mail, so you’ll never miss one.
    [3]
    As I mentioned in the beginning I made a video about mixing mixtapes live and software
    In that video I also talked about mixing techniques for DAWs and how to release your mixtape etc etc
    If you didn’t watch that video. Do it now, because I will extend on that knowlegde here.
    [4]
    Ableton is hands down the easiest software I know to make a mixtape with
    The tempo detection and aligning it to the grid makes making mixtapes a breeze
    [vo 1]
    Every DAW, also Ableton uses tracks. Each track represents a layer in the music.
    I use the Arrangement view (not the session view).
    I use the 2 track approach, so I can mix between those 2 tracks.
    Those 2 tracks represent your CDJ players of your regular DJ mixer.
    If track A is playing, you mix into track B, if B is playing you use track A to mix in.
    [vo 2]
    I'll add 2 more tracks (so a total of 4) for extra convenience.
    So I have 2 tracks to mix, 1 for sound effects and one for previewing.
    The preview track I use to listen to the song without any applied effects that are manipulated with automation and cutting up the track if neccesary
    You can right click on the existing tracks that Ableton conviently creates for you when you create a new projec and choose create audio track or
    you can use the shortcut Apple T
    [vo 3]
    Next I'll adjust the tempo of the project.
    Make sure it is somewhere in the middle of the fastest and the slowest track.
    The tracks that you want to mix, should not be to far from each other in tempo, because you have to stretch the audio too much, which results in hearable quality loss.
    I use Rekordbox to see how fast the tracks are and in which key.
    [vo 4]
    Then I’m adding a limiter from the plugin section on the left side of the screen.
    In this case I use Pro-L from Fabfilter, because I like it so much.
    But the stock limiter from Ableton Live will do the trick just fine.
    I add the limiter to the master channel.
    [vo 5]
    The master channel is the last thing that comes out of a DAW so adding a limiter will limit all the sound of youR DAW
    A brick wall limiter limits the volume of the sound when it exceeds a certain limit.
    This prevents clipping (and blowing your speakers).
    [vo 6]
    Notice that 2 tracks combined together makes the volume twice as loud.
    Plugins of a selected track are showed at the bottom of the screen in Ableton live.

    I've built a lot of tasteful and elaborate mixes in ableton, I just started leaning and paying for virtual dj pro to learn the other more classic mixing style. I can tell throwing my ableton mixes into virtual dj will make for a very unique sounding live mix!

    Thank you for the video! Everything works great. Only thing is when I have the finished mix its way quieter than all of the other podcast radio shows that I listen to. Im thinking because I have it down to -0.6 DB? How do I get this back up to normal loud volume so its the same as all the other radio shows I hear. (Tiesto, Martin Garrix) Thanks!

    Thank you!
    Great and simple to understand explanation, with some bonus important tips.
    I would only love to see how to keep the global tempo of the mix to increase overtime, but I guess there’s some kind of automation for that.
    Thumbs up, anyway. 👍

    I don't understand how you can make a mix on canton if you can only make
    12 return shipments, that's too little to do a thorough process, I like
    this daw but that stops me from editing it, I even downloaded the demo
    but I don't know how to do it since I come from samplitude x4 pro and as
    you know the workflow is different, if you could get me out of the bind
    and give me some reference that you can do something else.

    Thanks, man! I used to do this all the time to fix transitions in recorded sets but totally forgot how to do it after not touching it for so long. The intro version of ableton comes with the limiter and EQ plug in? Any idea? I feel like yes, but just not sure. The intro version should be more than enough for this.

  • @gbe386
    @gbe386 4 роки тому

    QUESTION: Can this be done with the Intro version of the product? Or is Standard or Suite version required???

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  4 роки тому +2

      there is a basic version of Ableton that you get with you sound card, (focusrite) the only real limitation is the amount of tracks you can use.
      You could get away with 2 or 3 tracks with mixtapes

      Automation on your master track. Then you select the tempo and define where you wanna change it!

    I prefer to use MixMeister Fusion instead of Ableton Live for making mixtapes.

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  4 роки тому +1

      you can explain to us why?

    • @otaju1
      @otaju1 2 роки тому

      @@DexxterClarkMusic I also think that MixMeister is easier than Ableton, because it allows you to change the Bpm at any part of the song, meaning, if you want to speed up or slow down the track at its end to mix with the next tune, you just change the part of the track which you want to mix. You don't have to slow down or speed up the whole track.
      While, i believe, that using Ableton you have to change the Bpm of the whole track, i.e., you are not able to change only the part you want mix (usually the very end). Is it correct ? or can I do it on Ableton as well by using a kind of Bpm automation, that only apply to part of the track ?
      I would love to be able to it on Ableton.
