"The Rudimental Ritual" by Marvin "Smitty" Smith played on the drumset (now with pdf)

  • Years ago I´ve been given a copy of Mr. Smiths´version of Alan Dawsons "Ritual" and it has been a big part of my practising routine ever since. To get the most out of it I´ve been playing it with brushes and sticks on different surfaces and also with different foot patterns. At some point of time I have had the idea to tranfer the whole thing to the drumset and began to look for ways to apply the different parts what´s generally considered to be " the classic Jazz drumset".
    My goal was to create an exercise that would help my drumset playing overall, but especially making me move around the kit more fluently and work on hitting different parts of the kit with different limbs in unison.
    here´s what I´ve come up with - and you can download a pdf for free here
    drive.google.com/file/d/139BW...
    but of course there are many more different ways for you to creat your own version(s) :)
    I would´ve loved to also include the sheet music as written by Mr. Smith and have tried to reach him and ask for his permission. But unfortunately I have not been able to get in contact, so I stay away from doing so in order to not infringe any copyrights.
    But I´ve put subtitles to each part of the video composed of the names of the rudiments and also the numbers of each part that Mr. Smith has used in his ritual.
    Please note, that I´ve omitted some repeats in order to shorten the piece a bit for this video. I´ve also discovered that I´ve memorised 2 parts in the wrong order and been playing the ritual like this for years - therefore Nr. 20 is followd by 22 and then 21... And I´ve completely omitted part Nr.13 because I couldn´t come up with a usable drumset application.
    I´ve played this on a Gretsch drumset from 1981 and a Ludwig Hammered Bronze snaredrum.
    The cymbals are a 22" New Stamp K Istanbul on the right, a 20" K Zildjian Prototype and a pair of 14" Hi Hats made by the late grat cymbalsmith Johan VDS
    Sticks are Peter erskine Ride models

    I´ve finally transferred the whole thing from my head down on paper by hand. And amazingly,. after I had shared it on the web, somebody who I don´t even know by his real name from somwhere on this planet has taken the time to do a version written on pc and sent it to me! So If you´re interested you can download an easily readalble pdf of what I´m doing here and have fun with it... drive.google.com/file/d/139BWTbSKMyGod_dLX6DAVZFBiiXvib_q/view?usp=sharing

    This a study in dedication and desire. Its just flowing out of your playing..Your brain memory as well as your muscle memory are phenomenal and obviously completely "burned-in" . This is one of the most impressive videos I've seen in years. Hat's off to the work you put in to be where you are now in your playing. You earned it!! Cheers. --Joe
    P.S. was this all one-take? one rudiment right after the other following the click? If so it makes it even more impressive, if that's possible. Let us know if you don't mind. If it wasn't one-take,, then your editing skills are right up there with your drumming chops. Do you teach via the web?

      @khm5369  6 днів тому +1

      Hi Joe. Thank you very much for your kind words! I guess I just was bored😅
      In all honesty: it was just just an idea that kind of developed itself and grew over time. And yes, it's all been recorded in one take - which was the purpose of Mr. Dawsons original idea which I took and run with...
      Keep practising and you'll be able to do it too !

    Did you work to arrange Alan Dawson Ritual on Toms like this?? It has helped me a LOT!!

  • @loucontino4804
    @loucontino4804 4 роки тому

    Nice. The next step is to add a bass drum pattern with the sock on the upbeats and do the ritual over it. Take any bd pattern you want, even a samba pattern and get the 4-way coordination thing happening at the same time as the ritual. Later on you can take a two bar bass drum pattern and play the ritual over that. The idea is to not think about the feet but have them moving as well. Peace.

    Hey! Nice video! I love the that kind of more musical approach to rudimental thing. I was thinking lately on reorganize the Rudimental Ritual for my own study in a more concrete or real way. It would be too much to ask you to send me the original Smitty thing based on Alan Dawson's Ritual? Sorry about my English.

    I was one of Alan's students from 1974-1981 at his Lexington MA home. This is nothing like the ritual whatsoever. The ritual is far more comprehensive and quite frankly more difficult to perform. Smitty never studied with Alan, I've spoken with him. I was with Steve Smith, Vinny Coliuta and Terri Lynne Carrington, we were all at Alan's home during the early years, right after he retired from Berklee. Get John Ramsay's book on Alan's teachings. It's what he taught us. You'll see the difference.

    • @thebeatclinic9000
      @thebeatclinic9000 5 років тому

      Play 1/8 note triplets over the bossa foot pattern VERY slowly so you can hear and feel how the bass drum goes in the gaps between the triplets. Do it with singles and doubles. Rinse, repeat depending on your sanity.

    It would have been better had you made the foot ostinato part louder
