I was born and bred in England,at school we were taught how great the British empire was and shown that a large part of the world was coloured pink to denote this .We were not told about all the death and destruction that occurred to achieve this in the name of Queen Victoria and todays royalty are still reaping the benefits all these years later.I spent nearly ten years in the south island and always found the Maori people to be a proud and decent people.I am not proud of my countries brutality in New Zealand,Australia,India,Africa and many other parts of the world and send my love to all the victims of my countries past evil deeds.

When I was in primary school, I was never taught about this kinda stuff. Even in high school, this stuff wasn't taught. These stories that explain our whenua are so important to what makes us New Zealand today. I wish I knew this stuff earlier!

My wife ( although hidden) was so bitter and ashamed at being beaten for being a Maori.. Her grandchildren and great Grandchildren can speak Te Reo but she could not.

Wow. Totally enjoyed that. Read about this as a youngster. Very very sad. Tribute to my Maori characteristics. Fortitude and perseverance. Wish Ngapuhi the best in their settlement 💙💙👊🏽👊🏽

Interesting that the documentary omits the battle of Puketutu, the first clash between red coats and Heke's men, where the red coats display their formidability in open combat and convince Maori commanders to use fortifications instead of open confrontations. The battle of Te Ahuahu is also missing, where Heke's forces are defeated by Kupapa. The documentary also doesn't mention the heavier losses sustained by Heke's forces during his strategic blunder at Ruapekapeka.
I was hoping a modern retelling of the New Zealand wars would be a little more balanced.

This is so interesting and so incredibly disappointing that the subtitles are auto generated! So much is missed, please RNZ, do better!

I had a Great great GRANDFATHER at Ruapekapeka, one of the first British Soldiers to enter that Pa,he was a Pay Sargent in the 58th Regiment British Army,he ended up Hating the Maori for the atrocities committed by these so called Noble Warriors.
A case in point a British Soldiers life was taken by being tied to a Stake and burnt alive using Kauri Gum as fuel.
    Nothing left but brass buttons.
Now before I'm being called a liarall of this was written in Sergeant Robert Gordon Hattaways journal which I have read many times.

So few likes. I live for this. Aotea, the last hauraki gulf prison islands empire mission statement confining maori to native reservation by Salvation Army, religious misogynist bigots allo5to be cis they are Christian, as governor grey who owned first hauraki gulf prison wanted, as he controlled South Africa and Australia too, the tri nations, welsh excluded. They git a red dragon for a flag. I'm Welsh but not legally allo6to be bec6of colonialism designed for English. French never did give up...
