This is one of my favourite scenes in any series, let alone one Vikings. As the cheers and the glory fades, the horror sets in. The ambition gives way to a primordial truth: we’re all just beast beating each other in the dirt.
I also kinda view it as people re excited to see the fight, but as it continues and these guys are beating each other to death, reality sets it. This shit is brutal, heartbreaking almost.
This was the most realistic fighting scene I've ever seen on TV. No fancy moves, no unlimited stamina and less sound effects. Of course there are some exaggerated part but like I said this is by far the most realistic!
I read your comment before watching the fight and have to disagree.. just 1 minute in Ubbe already did three unnecessary turns that should have cost him his life..
@ontyam That's a part of the culture. Vikings can't just be objectively better fighters, they have to boast and make a show of their greatness, not just to the soldiers watching but to the gods in order to be granted access to valhalla
He could have stabbed him with that knife the first time he had him down punching him, but didn't. That seems unrealistic. Idk, maybe he forgot he had the knife
@ontyan nope. Yes in this context. Ragnar was known to be calculative and for the most part, kept his emotions in check in battle. So ofc he would finish the job. The king on the other hand was introduced as a boisterous, proud figure. It makes sense given the context. I get why you wouldnt understand though.
LOL when Ubbe challenges him to Single Combat my man is like "YES, THIS MAKES ME VERY HAPPY, I AM GLAD TO FIGHT YOU TO THE DEATH, THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS OFFER !!!" lol.
After Ragnar Ubbe is my favorite character on the show. He’s not the strategist his father is and can be quite impulsive but he’s still intelligent and compassionate. Plus while he is less likely to throw down he loves fighting and has a very balanced style.
Best part of this is when the main Dane who set the rules of the fight starts chanting Ubbé’s name first. Mad respect. And got a great woman standing by him to boot
When we first meet King Frodo he seems almost meek, or humble. Then when we see at the beginning of the duel were like, "oh shit, this guy is a killer..."
Damn Frodo is a tough bastard, to keep going with those injuries, and apparently pretty strong. Frodo never actually managed to cut Ubbe, just hit him with a fist or the handle of an axe and absolutely WRECKED Ubbe each time. Almost every hit put Ubbe on the ground. Seems like he almost killed Ubbe with pure brain trauma like a boxer or something, had that man praying for help from Odin By the end of that fight I think both of them were just hoping the other guy would stay down
I’m waaay late to this, but I just thought I’d throw my two cents in. After that first cut from Ubbe, no matter the result of this particular fight, he was going to at least “draw” in the long run. In a time before antibiotics of any sort, any 1 of the 3 cuts that ubbe landed would almost certainly get infected and probably go septic. That’s a death sentence TODAY for some people, even if medicine has advanced so far that we can artificially keep people alive long past the point where they *should* have died. Back then? It was a guarantee. Ubbe, it seems (as you point out) was having just about everything internally getting wrecked by just about every single hit. I’d be thoroughly shocked to find out that he didn’t fracture his jaw, probably some ribs, maybe an orbital bone, and have pretty extensive internal injuries after all that. Mans looks like he was going THROUGH it :p
Man, the way Torvi looked at Ubbe while he was fighting, with a expression like "c'mon, u can do it" and also like "shit, he might be killed"... reminds me a looooot the way Lagertha looked at Ragnar when he fought earl Haraldson. Their facial expressions and I could say that even their thoughts were quite similar in those moments. Love those scenes!
Now this is what the fight between Ragnar and Rollo should have been. In this fight, you felt every hit like it was a train. Frodo may have been bigger and stronger but Ubbe had the heart in his fight, he wasn't just fighting for his own gain but for lasting peace, Ragnar's true son.
Frodo had almost no screen time or dialogue but this fight scene made me respect him a great deal as a character. Really sold me on the idea that yes, a protagonist could just pick a fight with the wrong guy and die in the middle of season.
I love how gritty this scene was, I was on the edge of my seat just hoping he wouldn’t lose that fight. I personally loved ubbr in battle he reminds me of 1 season Ragnar ✨
if u have finished watching vikings or even stopped at ragnars death i highly recommend watching "the last kingdom" it has events that take place after the vikings show. it will feel like a sequel series to vikings. personally i like king alfred from the last kindom a whole lot more than the alfred we got in vikings just to give u perspective.

I feel so sorry for people when people say they stopped watching after Ragnar dies because they never got a chance to witness this masterpiece of a fight. HUGE props to the producers, director, and most of all the actors for giving us one of the most realistic fights you will ever see on TV.
In viking tradition you absolutely cannot show cowardice if it's a life or death fight you'd be expected to fight like an animal until your last breathe I love how this scene didn't romanticize fighting but showed it as the real brutal struggle it is
I never noticed it before because it just happens for half a second but the man who later unsheathes his sword and tries to kill Ubbe can be seen at around 3:27 looking visibly upset and directly at Ubbe's knife as if he regards it in fear as for what its going to do to his king or as if he thinks its dishonorable because the Frodo never entered the ring with a knife. Its just tiny details like it that are the reason I loved this show.
This scence and when Ivar screamed I Am Ivar The Boneless at the Christian army and they where so scared they didn't do shit... Wh2n the brother find out Ragnars dead. The music,acting,writing... Flawless..
