Campfire Bread in the Dutch Oven. Black Pudding. Plough Point Tarp Shelter.

- In this video, Maggie and I head out on a cold and windy day to do a spot of bushcraft baking on the camp fire. After setting up a plough point tarp shelter to keep the wind off and preparing firewood, I get the fire going ready to make dough and bake a loaf of bread in my Dutch Oven. I then use the lid of the Dutch Oven to fry some delicious MacLeod and MacLeod black pudding to go with it - absolutely lush!
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
Bread Recipe (I used 1/4 to make the loaf in the video)
Strong white bread flour - 1lb (450g)
Plain flour - 1lb (450g)
Dried yeast - 1oz (28g)
Sugar -1oz (28g)
Salt - 1 oz (I use less)
Tepid (warm) water - about 1 pt (570ml)
Place your Dutch oven near the fire to warm up.
Mix the yeast with the sugar and add to about 1/4 of the water, set aside.
Mix the salt with the flour and make a well in the middle.
Pour in the yeast mixture, a little at a time, drawing in the flour to mix, when the yeast mixture has all gone, continue with the remaining water until you have a stiff Dough that you can handle. (if it is too sticky, add more flour. If it is too dry, add more water.)
Knead to give the Dough stretch and structure, really give it a hard time for a few minutes.
Form the dough into a ball, score with a knife and place in the warm Dutch Oven to rise. It should
double in size, so keep an eye on it.
Once it has proven, knock the air back out of it, knead again and once again, form into a ball or loaf shape.
Place back in the warm Dutch Oven to prove for a second time.
Once it has doubled in size again, scrape some coals away from the fire and place the Dutch Oven on top of them. Pile more coals on the lid and leave to bake. Check after 10 minutes and then regularly to see how it is doing. Tap the base of the loaf, it will sound hollow when done.
Slice, smother in butter and devour!

Note to US viewers. The Imperial pint used here is 20 ounces, not 16.
Thank you Kieran! A very good point! I’m going to pin this comment if that’s okay my with you - might be useful for those battling with very dry dough across the pond! 😂
Of course, because that would be more ale!
@@simonablokeinthewoods It's OK with me, by all means pin it.
Thanks for the heads up on the difference. i wouldn't have knew there was a difference
Some of us, in the colonies, aren’t the Philistines so many think we are. 20oz is a proper pint in my mind. 🍻cheers from Ohio!
Hey mister, when you cook something over the open fire if you make a little bit of mud and rub on the outside of your cooking pots once you wash them there will be no black residue on them. (Dont rub mud inside the cooking area.) The mud washes right off and your pots and pans will be perfectly clean. Hope this helps you. 😀 Hello from the Arizona desert.
Thanks for the tip! A top tip indeed! 😁
Lidia....great tip !
I'm impressed with that tip Brother
Or Sister
You are a real rural area lady !!
All the best

Came here for a quick look at making bread over a fire. Ended up staying for the whole video. I felt at peace, excellent work mate!
Thank you! 👍😁
breaking bread together is the symbol for piece....and bread ..lol pass a peace mate!
I feel you men..
I don't know why... Even when I see him do his thing.. makes me just.. relax and enjoy..
The relaxation of my eyes men.. I can't describe it.. so peaceful..
I did exactly the same ....
Is that like a blood sausage?
This guy is just easy to listen to. His enthusiasm makes all the difference.
He IS easy to listen to.
I’m not sure if I love the fact that your films keep me company when I have insomnia, or the chance to rewatch your film is the reason for my insomnia. Either way it’s 3am and I want black pudding!
When you gave your dog the last bite of bread, you won me over. 😀
Right? The love between the two of them is so beautiful! I couldn't help but smile with the deep bond of love, trust and respect they have with one another. She's such a well behaved dog too.
Donny
For me too and the fact that he talked to her!!!
Donny Boon like the last Rolo!
At first I saw the length of the video and I thought: "this is going to be another UA-camr who expands artificially the length of the video by repeating the same information over and over again". But there is real artistry in your editing, it really transmit the calmly flow of time in the woods. Congratulations!
Thank you very much - that is hugely appreciated! 😁
I didn't realize it was m ore than 1/2 over till I read your post. Makes one think, like why haven't I watched these vids before.
@@simonablokeinthewoods 💚
That was a very respectable looking cob loaf! I was a craft baker for a long time and making bread six nights a week for two decades left me pretty jaded with it all. For the first time in the four years since leaving that industry I'm looking forward to baking a loaf again, this time bushcraft style! Thanks for the video and the inspiration Simon, this is a great channel and I'm really happy to see those subs keep growing; they are well earned.
Thank you Jon! A complement like that, coming from a seasoned baker means more that I can express! Glad to have inspired - hope you have fun rekindling your love of the dough! 😁
The wholesome guy I'd like to have besides me if I had to cross Alaska. So much joyful peace right there.
I’m so glad that Andy recommended your channel. Like him your videos teach me a lot! Ty
As an avid medieval reenactor, this video really struck home. We make our own flour and butter using medieval techniques. I have been making bread in a Dutch oven, using yogurt instead of water and have been very pleased with the outcome. However, after watching this, I will certainly give your method a try. Also, after seeing the end of your video I realise how much I miss good old British black pudding. Thank you Simon.
Thanks Terry! Black pudding - food of the gods!! 😋
@@simonablokeinthewoods Oh yes.
Any fellow willing to share his food freely with his dog, is a good fellow indeed.
Everything tastes better when cooked on an open fire!
Ain't that the truth!
Fried eggs with hash browns and bacon -- What is this otherworldly delicacy?!!
It must be the fresh air...
and in cast iron!
Not black pudding.
Mike Wolff and eating it outside. Mmmmm
Bacon on a stick 🥓, French toast and real maple syrup 🇨🇦
Dear Simon I'm living in UK buy I'm Korean and full time house wife I v been baking sour dough and ciabatta since covid pandemic its such a healing n medication for me but I stopped baking bread becuse energy cost so I stumbled across on your site ..just amazing and even peaceful to watch .. your video inspired me going to try that baking on open fire or on bbq And also having dog myself seeing you shared bread with your baby looks beautiful mankind you are ! I want to thank for your lovely video Bless you
I am jealous of that little dutch oven, it is so cute. I wish i had one now. Simon, you are fantastic, thanks for your videos. I have a very large cast iron dutch oven but I can see how one the size in the video would come in super handy, for bread , for a small soup, or a coffee. You are a lovely person Simon. Always a treat to watch your videos, I hope you are well.
"give it a bit of a hard time, really" is how I will forever refer to kneeding
Haha - cheers Alex!
I loved that too. Perfect way to describe it. Loved the video, brother. I'm definitely a subscriber now. Carry on.
when using the dutch oven over coals put the coals around the edge of the oven, never under it because it will burn. then place coals on top. half way thru your cooking time give the bottem a 1/2 turn clockwise and lid 1/4 counterclockwise. this prevents burning the bottom of your bread. but it still looks good. good eats.
I have a very small pan that fits in my Dutch oven. I place three nickels in triangle shape in the bottom of the oven and place the pan on top of the nickels. This air space prevents burning of bread even when placed directly on the coals.
Great tips guys thanks!
That's why I have the type with legs. His is so small... nice for one. I would have put small stones under in a circle to hold it above the coals. I have 2 and have been using them for years. I make a nice coffee cake with pancake mix, cinnamon, apple sauce, raising... whatever I have. Pizza bread is a good one also. I put my graham crackers and chocolate in mine to warm while melting the marshmellows for smores.
@@barbforrest6026 very nice indeed. you may cook for us anytime.
The meal turned out perfect! The bread was spot on! Days like that spent cooking by the fire are ones not soon forgotten. Thanks for sharing friend.
Thank you! 👍🔥
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing. 🤗
Maggie is a beautiful dog simon.... found your channel last week and now hooked just watching all your past videos keep them coming good luck for the future
Brother, I would eat this without pause, burnt pieces and all. This is a meal that was truly made from the heart.
And I woulda' fried some of that bread right in all that glorious black pudding grease and grizzle for some epic fry bread. Toss a poached egg on top for bonus points. 🤤🤤🤤
@@WarhavenSC You got this, brother.
I just knead it in the bag for 10 minutes.
Also I use a round wire rack (amazon) covered with heavy foil that sits 1" off the bottom, it {Prevents Burning}.
4 Better Bread Add 1 Tbsp of water (under rack). The steam makes a higher rising loaf & nicer crust...
Thank you - I’ve got a trivet now, which helps hugely - I’m going to try it with water. 👍
One look at the Newfie and I was done.... :D Instant LOVE.
Absolutely love the doggy!
Maggie brings it back, I had a Newfie when I was a wee one back in Canada. Still think of and miss that dog, 50 years later.
this is so sweet. Thanks for sharing this wonderful trip and the grateful doggie.
Life is good with bread and butter! Good job!
You should have your own cooking program, The wild chef 😁keep up this very entertaining channel.👍👍👍
Totally agree!
Thanks buddy! 😁
Lol would have succes imo
@@simonablokeinthewoods my pleasure Simon.
What? EVERYTHING he cooked was burned horribly. Entertaining, yes. Instructive, never in a million years.
It really is the little things in life! You lit up like Christmas at the sight of your well cooked meal. Thanks for keeping things simple!!
Hi Simon, I was "just looking" and ended up in viewing many of your videos.
What I like most is seeing you completely satisfied with your issue. You make other people happy, that is a gift.
Thank you
I love your doggie, oh yeah, also love watching you cook.
I literally busted out laughing reading the recipe for the bread. "Really give a hard time for a few minutes" Thanks for sharing
Oh my gosh!
You've stirred that part of my soul to get out and about.
Since becoming a grandfather, I admit that I have less time for these things. And the little ones aren't yet old enough to go with Papa and learn the ways of the woods. But I will have to go and exercise the old memory.
Thank you for motivating me. And also,
Thank you for sharing.

A very positive influence your videos have, Simon! Thanks for being out there for all of us!
I loved this video bread looks great black pudding I've never tried I'm in Australia I agree to all the beautiful comments beautiful blessed you are a breath of fresh air thank you Simon and Maggie 🤠🍞
I love the versatility of the Dutch Oven, brilliant video
Loved this video. The bread looks gorgeous. And so is Maggie. Thanks!
Camping with dogs = living life properly. :)
Extremely delightful boy method for campsite bread making, inclusive of soil and random debris. Fabulous fun!
Natures seasoning! 😁 Thank you Alison.
I love how sweet you are to Maggie…..speaks a lot to who you are.
Bread looked delicious Simon! Turned out really nice. Thanks brother!
Another winner Simon thanks I hope your a teacher for your profession because you're a natural at it and really make it interesting !!!! all the best my Friend Earl
Thanks Earl! Funnily enough, I used to be, but that was a long time ago!! 😁
Top Drawer, Simon! This was not only very entertaining, but also quite informative. Many thanks! Big thumbs up, Mate!
I love cooking outdoors, started when i was 18 am now 51, thank you for the video's!
Wonderful, how can anyone give a thumbs down, baffles me, come you doubters, get out and try this stuff, it will put your life into perspective. Thanks for the inspiration Simon 🙏
Looks freezing cold and windy there. That bread looks fantastic !
The coals did look a bit too hot on the bottom but if you sat the bread on a trivet in the oven I'm thinking it may not burn.
First time I've seen one of your videos. Love how professional the video is and you seem like a thoroughly nice bloke too!
Thanks Richard! 👍😁
Riiight? Beautiful video.
Awesome job on the bread. Loved the Dutch oven too.
I crave these sorts of peaceful experiences. Thanks for sharing.
You can literally hear that puppy say, "can i have that last bit" and then you gave it to her....melts my heart...great video!
Love your Newfoundland she’s gorgeous ❤️
Your dog friend was the best part of the video - he is lovely...likes your cooking.
Thanks.
Simon I can't make bread as good as that in my kitchen let alone out in the woods ! Thank you for another great video.
Martyn Jones I've never made bread, but Simon sure does make it look a whole less complicated. A bit of practice I'm certain you'll get there.
Dutch oven baking by Townsends is a vid on Utube that tells you more about dutch ovens.
Maggie is a doll. Love those Newfies.
Thank you for your genuine video, it is very enjoying to watch.
I'm definitely going to try that bread recipe I love a good crusty bread.
Here is the trick with a Dutch oven. You can put almost all the coals you want on the top of it, but you have to be careful what you put on the bottom. I am a former Scout Master and we cooked extensively in the Dutch Oven. They are amazing pieces of gear.
Thanks mate! I’m going to make a trivet for it, should help to elevate it a bit. Thanks for the tip! 👍😁
Gringo or Simon, did you ever dig a hole, put the coals on the bottom, insert kettle, put coals on top then cover the whole thing with dirt? Something I've been meaning to try. Yes when I'm in the woods I cook it all on the campfire, evening for supper, middle of the night for a warm cuppa, early morning for breakfast (coffee). When people put old fridges on the curb, those metal racks inside are very handy for cooking over fire, as a grate.
@@campfireaddict6417 No but I have seen that done with old style bean pots. The clay crocks buried down for 6 or 8 hours and it slow cooks the baked beans......mmmm bacon.
What a great video! This looks like so much fun!
@@campfireaddict6417 That's why the ones with the legs cook the best.
That bread turned out beautifully!
@J Scotland burnt bread can be good too, with enough butter...LOL!
It only burnt a little bit, I like to think of it as caramelised! ;)
bread looks awesome!
I can watch these videos for the rest of my life. Just positive but educational entertainment. Thanks man.
Thank you!
That's a beautiful bread kola'.
Although on the high side that's got to be one of the cutest little cast iron pots I've ever seen I don't know if they sell a rack for that little tiny thing but they should I'm going to check it out when I go to Bass Pro Shop next week
Great job.Maybe fewer coals under. If you set the edges of the oven on 3 stones to keep the bottom just off the coals it does help. Our Neice and her Husband, are former Dutch Oven USA and World Champs. They use charcoal briquets and they have it down to a science. You would not believe what they can cook in a Dutch Oven. She judges national and international competitions now.
She sounds like a good person to know!! 😁 yes, definitely needed to be raised a bit! 👍
I want to take a sec to let you know how amazing you and certainly Andy are with these videos. Simply because you talk with us even if your just talking at us it adds so much to the video. I know you have to share the road with these other Bushcrafter UA-cam channels, but absolutely none of them chalk up to what you both do. Loving every single second!!
Always a treat to see Maggie.
Such a beautiful dog😍
I absolutely love campaign hiking and being outdoors, so glad I found your channel it's awesome. The bread looks yummy definitely going to give this a go
I hope you ill support me
Greeting from Ireland, Great video, bread and black pudding looked so nice and your best buddy to join you for dinner, what a good day.
Thanks Sean! 😁👍 she’s a good dinner companion - does the dishes too! 😂
At first.. trying to picture lugging out a cast iron pot... but aahhhhh it's a 'baby' dutch! ... how kewl is that !
Mmmmm I can smell that 'Black Pudding' from New England! Right nice with the butter. Well done.
Very much enjoyed this. Thank you Simon. You are soul food.
I saw your video. Thank you very much. A pointer in the future is to NOT place the douch oven on top of the coals but surround the oven with coals. This will prevent burning of your bread on the bottom. This was a brilliant video.
Thank you! Yes, heat at the bottom was definitely the issue- I’m going to make a trivet which should help and experiment with coal positioning - I’ll try it how you suggest. Thanks!
Another approach with bread is the 2/3 - 2/3 rule that I use. Put 2/3 of the heat on the top, and 2/3 of the way thru cooking, remove all heat from the bottom.
Or above the coals, hanging on a whatchamacallit....🥰😅. Great video.
Dang that looks good! I’m gonna go to the local British Pub and hopefully get some black pudding for myself and my four legged friend!
Just made this at Boy Scout camp and received rave reviews. Thanks, Simon!
Great! Really glad it came out well - I bet you didn’t burn the bottom like I did! 😂
Nice to this old traditional ditch oven bread making. My Grandpa taught me the art of campfire cast iron cooking many years ago. Nice work
I loved every minute of that. The bread and black pudding looked amazing. Well done. 👍
Thank you!
Maggie is gorgeous! 😊
What an absolutely beautiful dog...
When we do pizza in the Dutch oven we preheat the oven then add the crust and toppings and only cook with coals from the top. The heat from preheating is enough on the bottom.
Good tip! Thank you, I’ll try it without the coals under, or at least high off the coals. 👍 cheers!
I definitely need to try that. Thanks for sharing.
@@simonablokeinthewoods in the coals not on the coals. Heat rises. Nice vid cheers

So 12 minutes uh? I just got a dutch oven for Xmas and I can't wait to use your easy recipe. Hell I'm thinking about asking a buddy to winter camp. Bread still looks delicious.
At the moment my mouth is wired shut because I was assaulted and robbed of my I phone. All I can eat is soup. You video and tga T bread made me so hungry. Absolutely love your dog. I'm an new fan now.
Thank you Terry! There are some real low-life scum bags about!! I hope the jaw heals up soon so you can get back to eating some proper food! Atb, Simon

This inspired me to buy a dutch oven. I don't think it ever clicked in me that it's possible to bake over a fire. Buying ingredients now to start making awesome meals from scratch out in the woods! Thank you!
