    I'm about (4) years late to the party here, oh well! Great mobil rack build. I can clearly see the thought you put into this, very well done...
    I draw inspiration from these kind of builds as I am very close to building my own rack system for the same reason all of us build these things, as in tripping over my excess lumber, scrap pieces, etc... The key word is " ORGANIZATION "...

    Mobil shop is great. People forget they might want to remodel another building. Your rack should move to drveway for loading a truck. What brake do you have for sloped driveway? An anchor for earthquake as well in ceiling and wall. When all things on wheels. The other option is a pallet with walls and dividers for scrap. Use a pallet jack to move cpmponet units.

    Heck, you used more lumber in making your rack than I have laying around waiting to be used in my entire (tiny) shop! lol But I know you were anxious to get that project out of the way so you could get your lumber in one location and sorted out. Great job there, Tim! Thanks for the video. Things are certainly looking up in your shop.

      KSFWG Yeah, it took a bit of lumber to build this. I usually have a good amount of lumber acclimating in my shop ready for me to grab and work with... Glad to finally get it in one location. Thanks for watching!

    As a 40 year woodworker i alway taught my helpers and employees to never get your hands in front of the saw blade .if you dont you are setting your self up for a hurt. Watch your vid ,count how many times your hand travels out in front of the saw blade. Be safe ! By the way i still have all ten of mine.

    That's an epic wood rack! Nicely done. I thought the conduit would be to weak, but then I realized the weight dispersion over several means less weight on each individual pipe. Well done. Cheers! Chris.

    "Actually" that is a very useful design and great build. Didn't know the conduit was that strong for just a 2" end mount? Really liked the way you lined up the dado cuts. Perhaps I missed it, but where will the full sheets of plywood go (after you replenish your stock)?

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  9 років тому

      MRrwmac The 3/4" (internal diameter) EMT conduit is actually more like 7/8" in outter diameter... I drilled the holes 2 1/2" deep. They are holding the weight just fine. The full sheets fit on the back side of the rack. Once I get new casters on it, I'll probably show it in an update.

    This is the best rack I have ever seen, Can't tell you how many times I watched your build. What an efficient use of space. I have a few questions (and apologize in advance if they been answered but I can't find them). 1) What material are you using, basic SPF 2x or douglas fir? 2) is that standard birch ply? 3) You mention bowing in your comments due to load. Where are you seeing the bow? 4) with the mdf for the plywood rack screwed to the verticals do you still think you need all the horizontal 2x4 bracing? I was going to eliminated 1 or 2 of them. 5) any problems with the 6 casters (not being on a perfectly flat area)? I was planning on only using 4 1000lb steel/urethane casters.
    Thanks in advance!
    Carl

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  7 років тому

      +Carl K Tha K you for watching. 1) I used basic pine that is available in my local box store. 2) The plywood I used was TigerPly EDGE. It's a high quality Chinese birch that is comparable to Baltic birch. 3) I loaded probably well over a thousand pounds of lumber on it multiple times. It does bow a little, but not terribly. It's a toss up as to if it would be worth adding more weight to go with hardwood vertical supports... 4) You could remove some horizontal bracing, but I wouldn't trust the MDF to take on that extra stress. 5) Get heaviest duty casters you are willing to pay for! I upgraded to 5" metal casters with urethane tires and it is still crazy hard to move. I would probably recommend going with the largest solid metal casters you are willing to buy.

      Curt Walkins I used 6 4" casters in the build video. I ordered 6 Grizzly 5" casters part number G8173. Just ordered them today... So I guess I'll see how they are when I get them. I almost went with the 6" version even, but just didn't want it to be so tall. It is already going to add 2" to the height.

      +Mark Perry Awesome! Be sure to use good strong casters under it. Possibly even solid metal ones so they don't squish and get you stuck like mine did at first. After I loaded about 900lbs of plywood on the back + all the lumber, it didn't go anywhere on those smaller casters. Now I have 5" ones. It's still hard to get it moving, but it'll move.

  • @rickhickman2730

    How mobile did this cart end up being? Our lumber rack is wall mounted, and we are planning to build a sheet good cart. Your design might make more sense for our single car garage, if it's mobile enough

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  3 роки тому

      It is mobile, but once you have it loaded down, it's hard to get started moving with the casters I have because of the urathane compressing. Might be best to get all metal casters and it may roll easier.

  • @Wolf-xi4if
    @Wolf-xi4if 8 років тому +1

    Besides changing the casters is there anything else you would change now that you have used it for a while? how is the conduct holding up, I worry that being hollow it could bend where it leaves the wood support, it seems that would be the week spot. Great design though, lots of capacity that's for sure. Also did you do a drawing or just plan it out in your head!

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  8 років тому +1

      +Wolfgang Greystoke The conduit is holding up great. You'd be surprised how much weight that can take. It might have been better to use wider center vertical supports. Maybe 2x8 instead of 2x6. If I used a hardwood like Maple instead of Pine, they wouldn't have any problems at all... I have mine LOADED down with a couple thousand pounds of hardwoods. It's handling it, but you can tell that there is a little bowing happening.
      Also, I later put handle holes in each of the top storage bins giving me a lower area to grab and pull the thing around. I recorded doing these things, I just never did get around to making a video about the "updates" I made to it. I will try to do that sometime soon after the holidays.

    Awesome project!
    Not to judge your engineering skills but gravity and weight is a mother.
    I would rather opt to have the handles at the ends, here is why. I am always afraid of stooping lower and pulling something that is way over my head, any weight over my head and my pulling on something that looks like it weighs over 500+ pounds is not safe.
    By having the handles at the ends I can pull as hard as a want and not worry about all that wood crashing down on me it will fall to the sides and me being out of the way is safer in the long run. A kid could use that handle as an invite to move the cart.

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  8 років тому

      +John Wayne Yes, I'm not going to disagree with you, but leverage is key... Loaded up, this weighs well over 3000lbs! It's much easier to get it moving from a lower point. Handles on the end would be ok as long as they were also low. I upgraded to 5" solid metal casters that have small urethane tires. It's not bad, but it would be best with even larger casters. I'm limited on ceiling height in my shop and wanted to get the most storage out of the cart as possible. I'm not moving it often where I have it located now.

    • @johnwayne2103
      @johnwayne2103 8 років тому +1

    like the cart. I built a large roll around cart and used it for 12 or so years. they get very heavy over time. as to the casters, you should go at least to 5 or 6 inch (8" would be better) casters and I would get 800-900 capacity casters. you want to change those casters only once:>)

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  9 років тому

      Russ Veinot I ordered 5" metal casters rated for 600lbs each. Those are going to raise the cart 2" higher than it is now, and I have low ceilings... So that's as large as I'll be able to go. I did later find some that were the same size rated for 1000lbs. But they cost twice as much. Hopefully the ones I ordered will last.

      +Scott Haun (haunmade) Not really sure how much. I don't think the limitation is the EMT in this design. I thing it's the pine supports that the EMT is held by. If I used a hardwood like Maple, it would then be more like the EMT being the limitation... But I have hundreds of pounds on them with no issues so far!

  • @plemieux7237
    @plemieux7237 9 років тому +1

    Great build. One safety issue though. You are blocking access to your electric panel. Even thought the cart is moveable, placing anything within 36 inches in front of the panel is a code violation. If you need quick access in an emergency you might have a problem.

    • @WoodworkingManiak
      @WoodworkingManiak  9 років тому

      P Lemieux I was waiting for someone to notice that! My design actually is for the cart to tuck in and slide next to the clamp cabinet. Once I have the better casters on it, I will be able to do that much easier and it then slides just passed the electric panel. ;)
