Great Review! I’m currently using the Thule Chasm 26L backpack in the black colour way. First, I purchased the Thule Chasm 40L Duffel as an airplane carry one bag for clothing. I LOVE that duffel!! So afterwards I purchased the 26L backpack. I got it about a year ago. I think you’ll like the laptop compartment in the Chasm better. It has both top and side access. Protects quite well also as it is elevated off the bottom of bag. Very simplistic design which works well with packing cubes/tech pouches. Much more affordable than the PD’s as well, I’ve always thought PD had such a unique look and smart ideas, but couldn’t justify spending that much on a backpack… I really enjoy the half clamshell unique opening of the bag… it still gives you that “bucket” feel of the bag which keeps things down inside it without everything falling out; whilst giving easy access to the items at the bottom. The Bright interior also helps with that. Top pocket I use for my glasses and sunglasses, lots of room for both even in their protective cases. Water bottle pocket fits my Corkcicle Commuter cup perfectly, but larger Nalgene bottles are probably a bit of a challenge. It’s not the largest bag, but I think that’s what I like most about it for daily use… sleek and comfortable, without a lot of bling or exterior pockets to get caught on things as you move about a busy town. Less pockets means less to lose or have stolen too… 🤷♂️ Cheers!
I’ve tried several backpacks and I keep going back to the Thule Subterra 25L. Easy to access the laptop and just the right amount of space for snacks, a jacket, and a trauma kit. I’ll bet it is just a bit too small for your camera gear, but for my needs as a grad school student and avid hiker, it fits the bill nicely.
I don't if it's different with the 40l, but can you not access everything the pack using the front zipper on the 30l? On the 40l, the dividers can be zipped down completely. The reason the main compartment opens like that is it's meant to work with their camera cubes for you access the lenses from the top. I would never use it that way either, so its a bit annoying. Think the new outdoor range might be a better fit possibly.
