When I was restoring my RS Turbo. I had it on a roll-over that was a rolling frame that have large curved feet, as opposed to a jig. We thought the best way to get it tipped over would be to put our backs into it and lift. Needless to say the mk4 escort door and rear quarter wasn't made for 15 stone men to use them as back braces for dead lifts. Massive dents, lesson learned. Still got the car 20 years later and love it to bits. It takes balls to admit your mistakes, let alone put on them on the internet! You've earned a sub.
So glad you've commented and I'm not the only one to have gone through this 🤣🤣 I'm starting to build a story with this car and can see it being a keeper like your rs turbo 😁 thanks for the kind words and welcome to the madness 🤣🤣
Glad everyone is alright! It was a bit scary to see 😅 in the end another thing learned mate! Thanks for sharing, love your channel ❤ That integra is going to be awesome 😎
Thanks for the kind words. I can't wait until it's finished now it's probably the car I look forward to having a shot in out of the 13 I currently own 🤣
Ooops! Glad it wasn't worse but still must be gutting to damage the rear quarter. Fair play to you for attempting that and helping others to learn about the physics.
Jeezz.. that was scary. Was yelling at the screen to put the lift up. I’ve also put a body on a spit, you need to lower the lift a little bit so you can feel the balance before turning it further. If you cant turn it by hand, its going to get out of hand 😅 My rotisserie has a V shape of box section on the axle where you can clamp the horizontal bar to. This way the body can be adjusted in height. Your brother had a lot of confidence in the welds hanging under the car like that 😅 Great content anyway!
Feeling the balance is definitely the best advice here. Moving the first pin should have been enough evidence to stop 🤣. Michelle watched the episode for the first time last night as she's not a part of editing and said " holy f*** the cars almost touching the roof what were we thinking" and then came out with " I picked physics at school " 🤣🤣🤣
When doing structural welds like those on the jig, especially on thick material 2mm and up don’t do ‘tack’ welds…. Continuous welds are required, when you ‘tack’ weld you get lots of stop/start craters and don’t get the heat and penetration into the weld.
Great advice 👍🏻 anytime I try continuous welds it's a bit messy and that's why I do tacks. There was a scene in the video where I showed penetrations in the metal but I felt at 25 mins long it was too long and it got the chop in editing. I was holding my tacks for as long as possible and watching to make sure it was pooling and penetrating as much as possible but next time I'll use your advice 👍🏻 can't afford for any more mistakes and always looking to improve 😁
You most certainly can do spot welds on all panels and places, that's actually alot easier for inexperienced welders.. First tack is hot an deep penetrative weld, and within two seconds move tip slightly and spot again and again and again. That carries enough heat that will look very respectful welds. It's also alot easier for a beginner welder than trying to control heat and wire flow across any distance. They are more likely to blow that weld threw that continuous type of weld. But you can most definitely do a continuous spot weld that's full of heat and penetrative fill in it.. Use scrap metal and build confidence. That's what I've taught beginners and some competence welders over the years..
To be honest I wasn't going to post this footage out, it was Michelle and Gary's idea to release it as an episode and I did what I could with the footage. It's important I show my fails as much as my successful moments after all the channel is based on relatable content 😃😃
@@identitycarcare477 although it might not be an ideal situation i enjoyed it and it definitely is relatable we have all made mistakes like that but its only funny when its someone else and not a honda!! thanks for sharing it anyway really enjoyed it keep the video’s coming you are doing really well both of you guys
@@fewhavestrength so the t shape part of the spit I had fitted upside down. This was putting all the weight about the centre line and making a pendulum. Flipping it round brought the centre point of the car through the centre point of the spit giving it better balance. If you picture a hog on a spit I basically had strapped the pole to the hogs belly instead of through the mouth giving me zero balance.
@@identitycarcare477 yes so the jig needed to be higher on the front. it would've been centre then. when we skewer a pig its mouth isn't centred btw, but due to the weight difference between a pig and your car we cant use it as an analogy. are you hungry again?
to use a car spit correctly you not only have to be in the center left and right but also you need to be in the Center of the car up and down the car will then be somewhat balanced and be very very easy to turn and the legs at either end of the spit should have a metal rod/box section connecting them so they cannot move away from eachother.
I was so focused on the left and right balance I never considered the up and down and created a pendulum 🤣🤣🤣. I'll need to make an adjustable rod to connect the bottoms for peace of mind. Thanks for the help 😀
I think this is a got away with it by the skin of my teeth moment for sure. If it ended up on its roof the damage and trying to get it back upright would have been devastating.
Easy mistake but 1 bit advice remove as much weight as possible doors and wings rear hatch should all be removed any extra weight causes bigger imbalances you’ve removed wings but they weigh nothing in comparison to doors.
Think I've left the door etc on to protect the headliner and a couple other things in the interior that haven't been removed. The spit was never in the plans and probably cutting corners by not removing all the parts you've mentioned to make up lost time which has now bit me in the ar**. Not my brightest moment 🙈
@@identitycarcare477 your learning everyday is a learning experience remember nobody’s perfect keep your head up your doing better than most but remember prevention is better than a cure. Oh and forgot to mention just get a bit of wood and bolt to each rotisserie end to stop them splitting
Good advice as people don't realise the weight of doors and boot lid with glass in it... That makes a huge difference on that tipping point weight . Bottom of legs could have been a fair bit wider as that stops the initial snatch when weight flips over. I've seen people squashed badly by using spits wrong.
One if the best car youtube channels

First person to crash a car with no engine or wheels on it! was good fun putting it back round though!

Hoping for a drama free finish to the project now 😅. But it's still early doors so sit tight 🤣🤣🤣
@identitycarcare477 popcorn at the ready 🤣🤣

so did the jig need to be up higher near to the lights rather than on the bumper? keep us up to date cheers for the vid 👍🏻

Love it dude. You either win or learn.
This is one that will stick with me every time mount a car on a spit again. First thought " remember the last time when you wrecked the integra " 🤣
Bro was thinking stop turning it 😂 you live and learn ❤
Watching it back it's the most ridiculous decision ever 🤣🤣. Won't live this one down for a while but definitely learned from it 💪🏻
Not sure if you can secure the stands to the floor if that would work depends how good your floor is

Amazing what 100mm does to the centre of mass. Well done guys.
Think this was a whole meter over the centre of mass 🤣🤣 cheers for the support 😃
That was terrifying 😂😂😭😭😭
I had to re-live it many many times editing the video 🤣🤣🤣
Aw mate, I’m sure it’ll get fixed no problem. Good luck
The silver lining is the interior is fully out so it can be worked from both sides. Deffo learn from this lesson for the future.

Yeah not a bright moment at all I have no idea what was going through my head especially after highlighting the issue before the accident happened 🤦🤦🤦

Definitely not wrecked... minor body work issue easily solved
Easy repair for someone experienced, I think I'll leave it to Danny and sit this one out after my glue pulling episode 🤣🤣
