What I don't understand is why did Judas HAVE to betray Jesus? If it had been the Roman military that had made the arrest at the Garden of Gethsemane, well then I would understand because they wouldn't have known him. However it was actually Temple security, for example, it was the High Priest's servant who carried out the act, and they must have known him from all the visits he made to the Temple? Even if Judas had an axe to grind with Jesus, for the life of me I can't figure out why the Sanhedrin paid him to point out a man they already knew?
I wonder whether Judas was then supposed to go with them and be one of those giving testimony against Jesus but he got cold feet and tried to give the money back?
Pity Judas didn't give his reason to someone. The gospels came from Matthew, Luke, Mark and John. The fact he was trusted to be Treasurer says much about his character.
The Heavenly Spirit who volunteered to incarnate as Judas was fully aware of the important role He was to play - to ensure the success of God's Mission of Redemption. It was all pre-planned and nothing left to chance. They had to make sure that Jesus made it onto the cross. It was actually Christ who was betrayed - not God. 1 Corinthians 3: We proclaim the mysterious plan conceived by God in His wisdom, a plan which has hitherto been concealed, but which God established before time began in order to lead us back to glory. This plan was known to none of the rulers of this world, (Satan/Lucifer) for otherwise, they would not have crucified the lord of glory.
Judas Iscariot was not saved. He never believed and it got worse. Judas died lost. He never truly loved him. Judas did not lose his salvation because it is not possible. He was never saved to begin with. When you become born again you are sealed by the holy spirit and cannot be lost. Peter denied Jesus three times and remained saved. Trust in Jesus and you will be saved.
Would christ have forgiven judas and taken him back if judas repented and not killed himself? Christ forgave the romans and Jewish authorities for killing him. Christ redeemed Paul who was originally a Christian persecutors. There's no reason to think christ wouldn't have redeemed judas had judas wanted. Jesus died for judas too.
Was Jesus in hiding? The answer is a definite no. So why would it take Judas to lead them to where Jesus was? They all knew where to find him. They would visit him during sermons, ask questions, eat with the rest of the multitudes etc. Some, like Cornelious, even visited him by night! So why would they waste their money on Judas. This betrayal story does not add up.
There is some force in your question. It was night time, after the Passover meal. At that hour, there were very few in the Garden if any, and only 12 in Jesus' group (judas was in the arresting party.) The fact that they tried to arrest "the man in the white sheet" (possibly John Mark) suggests that they wanted to arrest the whole party. The priests would not have identified Jesus with the same certainty as a disciple. They must have had a reason to pay Judas an amount sufficient to buy the potter's field afterwards.
When I consider the omniscient, and omnipresent, aspects of God, that is to say, knowing all, and, being able to exist in past, present, and future simultaneously, not being constricted by time, or ignorance, God must have foreseen the falling of Lucifer before He created him. I have wondered if there was some correlation between the relationships of God/ Lucifer, and Jesus/Judas? I've yet to find an answer, or even anyone posing the question. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
If it was God's will that Jesus die on the, then why is Judas hated as the betrayer who sent him to the Cross? Wouldn't he'd be glorified for doing God's will?
