  • I give the branches a trim before I bare root and trim the roots. I can then plant the tree in it's new bonsai pot!
    The trees are Umbrella trees or Schefflera arboricola.
    Leszek has also sent me a 60th birthday present, hint, you've already seen it!!

    It cracks me up how sometimes you have so much consternation over the tiniest branch twig selections. And then sometimes the blue office scissors come out and leaves fly everywhere without remorse.

    It is my guess that some people who see this awesome Shefflera don't realize how much work and time put into it.
    I have a couple of Sheffleras that I had for like 6 years and they really slow on thickening. Your choice of pot was valid for the reasons you gave us imo, hope you find a nice clay pot .😊

  • @VinnyChirayil
    @VinnyChirayil 2 роки тому +3

    Awesome tree & nice choice of pot, Nigel 👍
    Benefit of raising the tree further : since your tree is very short & wide, the beautiful trunks & root-turned-trunks are not easily seen unless one bends down & peeps in at the correct level. Hence, planting the tree higher in the pot would have helped.
    Also, instead of keeping the soil level flat like in your reference photos of banyan trees, if you could raise only the tree root area so that it slopes down to the edges, then the tree would look a bit taller & give more visibility to the trunks & surface roots.
    Indonesian bonsai tends to give a slope to the roots to highlight all that hardwork. When viewed from the side, the surface roots rise up as a triangle and the canopy looks like an inverted triangle on it.
    Perhaps, you could give it a try in your next repotting.

  • @murray821
    @murray821 2 роки тому +1

    It looks absolutely stunning in this pot! Seeing it now, the original pot was way too small with the canopy sticking far out over the edges. Good job, and a lovely tree!

    Good pot selection for this bonsai. Adding any interesting rocks to the outside area? I envision this tree in Hawaii with old lava flows nearby. Now you've got me thinking of adding a schefflera to my collection.

  • @paulbyland
    @paulbyland 2 роки тому +1

    I'm glad you are putting this tree in a bigger pot. In my opinion, the only failing of this tree is that the angles that you can see the trees beautiful trunks and branches are so low. If you are observing the tree from a very high angle, it just looks like a thick schefflera. The bigger the tree gets, the wider that angle where you will be able to see the tree's shape. Perhaps let the middle get just a little bit taller.

  • @ivoice1903
    @ivoice1903 2 роки тому

    I can recommend you to use neemoil to fight the scales. Just mix it with water and spray onto the whole tree, also the trunk. It is a natural insecticide that removes and prevents scales. I had a focus and a guava tree infected and it also jumped over to my ponytail palm . After using it the scales were gone within a day.

    Looks great Nigel. I def liked the concrete pot myself but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
    Also, do you ever tie your trees in? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you use any wire whatsoever? Most clubs, books, videos, etc… all stress the importance of locking your tree into the pot yet your obviously successful not doing it?

    • @sherryrowe2487
      @sherryrowe2487 Рік тому +1

      You are correct that most bonsai people/clubs emphasize tying the trees to the pots. Nigel rarely uses wire and at most I've seen him use stones on top of the soil to hold the newly potted trees in their pots until the roots grow enough to hold the trees in their pots.

    Quick random question for anyone willing to answer, what's the best way to acclimate a greenhouse plant to regular outdoors. I tried with an oak seedling I dug up a few weeks ago. It was looking super healthy in the greenhouse, so I put it in shade and went to work... When I got home the leaves had dried up a bit, and shriveled. I put it back immediately, but now I'm nervous to bring any trees in there out. 😭
