Our problems started in 1979, when Maggie Thatcher took hold. She got lucky once, but that money was all squandered North soil and the revenues, but we had 45 years and now look at the country neoliberalism doesn’t work.

It all went wrong in the early 1970s when we stopped taxing the rich at over 90%. That meant there wasn't enough to pay unionised workers, and when the unionised workers didn't get paid, they went on Strike and then Thatcher smashed the unions. Then Thatcher sold everything and deregulated the banks and there was money, for a while, and now there is no money left.
The trouble with Thatcherism is that eventually you run out of somebody else's money.

North Sea oil and gas revenue were not used to create a sovereign wealth fund and Thatcherism has resulted in the destruction of the coal mining industry and loss of heavy industries such as steel, shipbuilding and vehicle manufacturing.

In the UK we confuse politics with politicians. We should learn more about global politics and economics, then teach our children, and so on. There are a lot of people here that still think that they are voting for the Prime Minister in a General Election. Changes in education and in the way the UK voting system works is well overdue.

You reminded me of a cartoon that I saw in an electronics magazine in the early 1980s. There were two technicians looking at a chart on the wall, which showed a steep downward trend. One of them is pointing and saying "Cheer up, things are getting worse at a slower rate.".

I think when people casually talk about "populism" they forget that populism is the opposite of elitism, and it's that cross-party elitism that drives many people towards supporting the likes of Trump and Farage. A mistake in my view, but their needs are ignored by the established parties and authorities, belittled as "far right" - these cartoon political figures like Trump and Farage at least give the appearance of paying attention to their difficulites.
Another issue that is casually ignored by establishment authorities is that a significant proportion of our taxes is used to fund aggressive imperialistic wars that kill innocent people. When mainstream governments are behaving like warmongering authoritarians while complaining of "populism" from the little people, it's not surprising that many are turning towards the fringe.

The politicians have failed far too many with their obsession with making the oligarch's richer. Of course if the oligarchs pay them more than their parliamentary salaries then they have new masters.
The single solution would be to ban donations of over £10K per annum from any individual or company or financial entity. And the beneficial owner of the money should be declared audited and publish for the electorate.
That would sort the parade out.
    Best wishes from George

Westminster is a uniquely choreographed clown show which for me is so antiquated and ridiculous that it's embarrassing to watch what I'd call a never ending Mad Hatter's Tea Party. For god's sake the place can't even adopt electronic voting! Imo we have to focus on seeing the place for how inadequate and anachronistic it is in all its ways. Start saying other countries are just as bad and we let this huge psychotic clown show off the hook as if we have a need to normalise it to make ourselves feel better.

The answer is so so simple: whatever it takes to reduce poverty and inequality, do it- tax the rich, tax wealth, make billionaires and millionaires pay their fair share; address the climate crisis head on as a matter of urgency, invest in communities, and challenge the corporate media. Alas, the major political parties and Reform seem squeamish about doing any of this. We're stuck in this impasse where the main parties and Reform still cling to discredited neo-liberal policies because it suits their "greed is good" wealthy donors and themselves.

The great opportunity now opening up is federalism. If Britain was a federation of equals, not a union, it would be possible for each republic (its time!) to try out different policies which might suit their different societies, and allow the other republics to follow or reject. Central control was a conspicuous failure in the Soviet Union, it is demonstrably failing in the UK. Starmer will of course oppose this. He has to go.

With FPTP we have the prospect of a Con/Reform lot in absolute power….maybe Farage as PM?…on 30 something % of the vote. All MAD. PR voting will control the far right…unless, of course, more than 50% of voters vote for them….God help us all with that scenarios!

Why are there no politicians in the UK who are prepared to adopt MMT ideas and put forward a positive prospectus for the the future? Are they all cowed by the "there is no money refrain"? Does everyone in the Treasury implicitly believe the Deficit Myth? Polls show that the NHS is a key priority of the electorate so anyone with a credible MMT financing plan would surely garner widespread popular support.

Mr Murphy regularly denigrates neo-liberalism but seems reluctant to spell out his alternative vision. He is a proponent of MMT which to me indicates that he’s all for printing money and giving it to worthy causes, while heavily taxing the rich. In other words fiscal socialism.
The underlying problem here is that everyone talks about their rights but few people acknowledge their responsibilities. Mr Murphy often cites child poverty as a problem that can be solved by government but the reality is that many parents fail their own children by getting their priorities wrong. Chucking more money at them would make things worse not better.

It is a complicated world at the moment.
I have always maintained that the UK is ungovernable. As our society diverges, it is ever more stark.
We treat our politicians so appallingly badly that the only people that want to be politicians are either truly dreadful or hopelessly idealistic (as we are seeing with Labour)
    Add to all of that:
A very weak EU which has culturally overstretched itself to the east (again idealists).
Putin, who has his grubby fingers in so many pies across the globe
And then Trump and Musk who like Putin are trying to shape the world into something that suits them (but are far less subtle than Putin).
To a lesser extent, the Indians who are not helping but instead taking the opportunity to play everyone off against each other in order to make a quick buck and to acquire cheap oil and weapons.
At the end of all this the Chinese are sweeping up, which accelerated when covid started and continues at pace while the rest of the world is in turmoil.

A truer name for the SNP would be the Scottish Independnece Party. By the way has Westminster been honest and open in it's dealing with Scotland the SNP would not get many votes, however history shows Scotland has had only lies and deceit from that place for the last 317 years. Oh yes and complete social, political and economic incompetence as well and still does, Holyrood was setup to fail with none of the powers to really make a difference and even when they try Westminster steps in and stops it.
