- Racer X Garage Episode 57: Well I broke down and fully rebuilt the 2 bbl carburetor on our Mercruiser 4.3 V6. That itself was a fantastic success and the 4.3 ran fantastic. Well, at least for a little while.....

I had the same Issue it was crushing....2 4 inch cracks each side intake man...J.B weld 4 years ago no problems since .. Grinded it down packed jb.waited 24 hours repeated 3 more times....oil has been gold ever since....
Ohh, thats awesome that it held up, but not a gamble we're willing to take. Way to think outside the box!
Beginning the same journey on a '92 Seaswirl. Really appreciate the fact you failed initially but, kept these vids up. May the DIY god smile upon you.
Good luck your project! Hope your success is much easier gained than ours haha!
I had a 80s Chris Craft Cavalier, same engine, same problems. I sold it. Listed it as $800 for the trailer (Shoreland'r roller) and comes with free boat! Now Im rockin the Sea Pro. Once you go O/B you never go back.
Unfortunatley I think we're done with this one too. The floor is getting soft, its at a point now where its not work going any further.
Sorry to see that bud!! I'm on a similar project, and been watching your videos, which by the way are great. My buddy and I got a 1997 Rinker Captiva that's been sitting since 2014 up north, and we just got the motor to free up. This past weekend, we rebuilt the starter, and now is the moment of truth. We gotta crank this baby up and see if she runs!! Hopefully we dont run into the same issues as you guys. Wish me luck and I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Yeah it was not great to see the cracks. Good luck with yours though! Let me know if you get it fired up!
You should have posted a video of it takes to revive an old motor.
Do not paint a carburetor ☆ if you have a backfire it will be fuel for a fire 🔥 I've done many carburetors * have never seen one yet painted 🎨 😅
Food for thought, this one was painted before I tore it apart, but maybe with a marine quality paint.
Just get a 4.3l out of a truck! It's the same thing but with brass freeze plugs. Your engine has vortec heads (vertical intake bolts). I'm about to do an engine swap in my boat, from a 3.0 to a 4.3 out of a truck. Best of luck man.
We have one actually! ua-cam.com/video/1EKn3oR7MJs/v-deo.html
Dam... I'm starting the same process with my 4.3 hopefully no milk lol got a lot of great info from your vids thank you!
Good luck! I certainly hope you have more success! Thanks for checking out the video!
You should really drop the outdrive down when you run the motor. It will destroy the u-joint in the outdrive. Ask me how I know. And it is not a cheap repair, or an easy one. And it will happen very quickly.
Good to know, thanks!
15 degrees max. You are right.👍
Yep! just takes one time to ruin a motor...In the south you run the risk in volatile weather...Great Content fellas...
We will def drain at the end of the season for sure from now on. Learned the hard way...
Good thing you dont have the 4 Barrel Carb... Doesnt Exist anymore. I found a Sierra kit that says it fits, but i will find out for sure tonight or tomorrow assuming it actually comes in
And now i see it would have not mattered anyways :(
Yep. Big Bummer lol
Man I know the feeling way to keep go attitude brotha
Thanks! We have not given up yet!
Once I get the vote under my name it's time to restore the boat and pretty soon I'll be in your as far as getting it lake ready.
Good luck man! Will be awesome to get on the water again for sure!
I’m in the beginning stages of unfreezing a 4.3 (the dreaded clunk) and after watching your videos, I’m trying to save myself heartache (and skinned knuckles) was there a way you could have diagnosed the cracked engine block, before all the work you put into it?
Thank you for the great videos!
it was super apparent once we removed the intake. So you might start there, good luck!
Yes * you can use a raideator pressure tool to see any water leaks in your motor ☆ it's away of putting air pressure behind water , the water will come out of cracks * make sure the motor is all put together together so it will be a closed unit ☆ look for Sligh bubbling any where on the motor especially around combustion chamber in cylinder heads ☆ motor has to be together with radiator and hoses attached * pressure tool can be screwed on to radiator fill hole 🕳 I did this once snd and it worked perfectly 😊 * I think you can get this pressure tester at parts stores like O'REILLY''S 👍 don't be afraid,, it was really easy to do.....
You going to try welding or brazing it? If it still runs great it's probably just the water jackets in the block and since there is not radiator is should be a really low pressure system.
No, were not going to waste any more time on this shortblock. It may have not been really bad before we ran it, but it flexed so much I have no doubt in my mind it has warped and messed up tolerances. We may pull the inner goodies out but we won't be using this block
Damn brother, I'm at a loss of words for you Right now. I'm fighting to get a title for a boat I purchased on Craigslist and put under my name and the boat that I want to restore is a 1984 thundercraft 17' Malibu.. Who knows what condition the motor is but because I'd rather rebuild or buy a new motor for my boat rather than buy a boat in payments, I think I'll settle for a brand new motor if I had no choice.. Either way it goes you have a great looking boat which I do believe you should invest into a motor when you can you can. At least you know what you have In your Stern.
We do have a motor and will be starting on the process soon! Keep an eye out, thanks for the kind words!
Drop an LS on that thing!! 🙏🏻
It is tempting but the price of doing that in a boat vs. a car is drastically different.
Hey why did you think the seat was stuck?
It was not allowing fuel into the bowl of the carburetor
@@RacerXGarageI was having the issue of not stopping fuel lol
@@RacerXGaragemay have to change the oil AGAIN. lol
Bro i have a 2003 21.5 searay with a 350 mercruiser that shits anoying even to work on this gives me more probs im sealing the transom and popin on an outboard these inboards are a mission to work on not because its hard but to do anything you have to pull that shit out
Its definitely been a bit of a project! If we weren't so emotionally attached to it, we'd of given up by now
very good video! I need some advice on something. I recently bought an 1986 chevy truck with a V6 4.3. It has a propane system on it and the original carburetor is no where to be found. I have a 78 quadrajet that I just rebuilt and would like to install it. the truck intake manifold is the original spreadbore quadrajet carburetor. Also this engine has the electronic spark control distributor without the vaccum advance. if I put this 78 carb I got on it do you think it will work just fine?
I have no idea on how propane carburetors work so unfortunately I am no help here to ya. I hope you get it figured out!
She aint got no oil pressure lieutenant dan!
Had some sort of pressure, but definitely wasn't just oil... 🤦♂️
Please don't. 😣 I think i have the same issue . My wife is going to kill me if i keep spending money .
it sucked to find out!
Ah man
lol I know which part you just saw
What carb rebuild kit did you purchase?
It's been too long ago, and unfortunately I do not remember
I would like that carburetor, u selling?
No sir, its sitting patiently waiting to go on the new engine
FIND AN S10AND MODIFY THE BLOCK REUSE THE HEADS UP
We're looking, hard to find without a TON miles
@@RacerXGarage JUST REBUILD IT. NEW CRANK AND PISTONS BORE IT OVER 20 OR 30 ITLL BE FINE.
YOUR DOING REALLY GOOD THOUGH I AM ENJOYING THE SERIES!
Head gasket you think
Definitely cracked block. You can see it at the end of the video in the valley under the pushrods
ahha too bad you guys had a lot of work in that boat maybe 4,3 out of a s 10 will work
We know the crank is beefier on a Marine motor, and I believe the camshaft is different. With that said, if we find one cheap enough we would try anyway I think... we'll see
@@RacerXGarage there the same. Gm didn't build special internal components for mercury. It's simply a truck engine. Truck cam, truck crank. They put brass freeze plugs in it and slapped a cast iron manifold on it.
No gear lube
I'm not sure I follow what you're saying
Noooo😭😭😭
Indeed!
I want to scream for you. Smh what a shame. Darnnit
It was quite frustrating, but we'll get back on it in the fall
sorry but the music track is obnoxious
🤷♂️
😭
Indeed
