This movie is so underrated when it came out. After parasyte, I'm glad people are looking more at bong-joon ho work and this film started getting recognition. I didn't know this was based on a French sci fi graphic novel.

My favorite part about this movie is the “Steampunk” feet it has to it. I really wish we had more steampunk movies to watch. We have Cyberpunk movies but steampunk never gets its respect

@@YodatheHobbit Calm your tits, nobody is "rewriting history". It´s just commonly known, that not that many people know about this movie. Just because EVERYONE who saw this movie said "Oh, you MUST SEE this one!", doesn´t automatically mean, that a lot of people DID see it eventually! Critically acclaimed doesn´t always mean popular and vice versa......

    Fun (not really) fact:
Apparently, in the scene where they look into the machine and see the roaches being ground up into food, they weren't originally supposed to be roaches. It was originally supposed to be the feces of the rich. The people at the back of the train were supposed to be literally fed rich people's shit. But they were told they had to change it to something a little less revolting for audiences, so they switched to roaches. You can actually see if you look closely and pause that the stuff in the fact looks kind of like shit and they just added some digitized roaches on top to cover it up in post.

I never realised that people didn't necessarily love the ending, I think it's perfect (and actually more radically hopeful than a traditional happy ending) ; Curtis refusing to perpetuate the system and sacrificing his life to give an actual chance to the future generation was the right choice.

I bought this recently to watch it for a 2nd time, love it 9/10
Also, the reveal of why Chris Evans character feels he's not worthy to lead his people, hearing his history on the train made my jaw hit the floor... Dark, HEAVY and heart breaking stuff 😲😢

I was the only one my friends (all of whom I dragged to the theater to see this with me) who loved the ending. You can't overthrow an entrenched system from inside it; you have to go outside of it to look for solutions. So blowing up the train just felt right to me. My favorite analysis of the film looks at it from an economics perspective - Wisecrack's "SNOWPIERCER: Can We Build a Better World?" ua-cam.com/video/2ydHL5wkmJo/v-deo.html

i think your ratings are definitely fair! it's an interesting film because i think it's not the BEST dystopian story and it's a bit heavy-handed, yet somehow the imagery and ideas REALLY stick with me and horrify me more than other films. like i wouldn't give this film a 10/10, maybe an 8, but it's still just so iconic to me for its uniqueness

    • @4tr0phy
      @4tr0phy 2 роки тому

Saying an allegory is heavyhanded is redundant lol. It's not a valid criticism. It would be like saying "wow they chose the tortoise to represent slow and steady and the hare to represent quickness? Bit heavyhanded."

Dont know what the directors view of the ending might be but for me its like.. sometimes it might just be best to try out something drastic and different, towards the unknown with a sliver of hope, rather than continue with the same old shit thats clearly not working well. Its a risk, last of humanity will likely just die with it in the context of the story but was their existence humane in the first place? Life adapts and goes on even without humans.

The part that most people miss in this film is that most of the people in the tail of a train were never suppose to be there. They stormed the train, the rich helped finance the train being made when they saw that the chemical would destroy the world, they prepared for when the “Global warming nuts” killed everyone. So, when they forced their way on there was not food for them. They had to come up with a way to let them survive, so they grew a food source for the poor to eat. But not till the numbers were low enough to sustain them, which is why all the time passed at the start with no food or water.

This movie is truly amazing imo. The deeper you dive into the messages and meaning/metaphors etc of alot of this movie is fascinating. I actually like that it's a dark movie, more realistic in a way. Every movie doesn't need the cliche happy ending/happy tones throughout to be good, it makes you feel different emotions. I wish there was more movies like this just for something different. It's a shame harvey weinstein really ruined the release of this movie but i'm so glad people are finally seeing it after the success of Parasite. Great director

This movie was a wonderful satire of class inequality. Technically, if the train had adopted a more equitable distribution of resources, the people would have lived better. True, the First Class would have become less, but the Tail Section would have become more. A balance would have been achieved.
What the First Class in any society doesn't understand is that they can only enjoy their elevated status for only so long before the oppressed class revolts. This has happened in every civilization since the dawn of time.

It’s a rare occasion where I think a movie could have benefitted from a few more characters surviving, or at least lasting a bit longer. Jamie Bell’s character needed to die, that choice needed to happen but I think it could have happened a bit later and maybe have someone like Octavia Spencer’s character last till the end. Losing them all in that sauna scene was like you said deflating.
Also my ONE gripe is that we never see a sleeping cabin, we see saunas, jacuzzis, nightclubs, drug dens but never once where the rich people sleep. I get we can’t see EVERY cabin but we know they went through it. I just think if your going to try and make this train idea “realistic” you can’t miss that, even if it’s just a glimpse.

If you had asked me what I thought of the film half a decade ago when I first watched it, I'd have given it a similar rating you guys gave it because the dialogue was super choppy and the plotholes were plenty, but if you had asked me now in 2023, I'd give it a 10/10 simply due to the standards of films declining over the past couple of years. I mean people these days thought Peacemaker was a good show despite its atrocious dialogue, acting, and story. Also, no, the TV show for Snowpiercer is really bad. They took the mystery and the consistency of the film and tossed it out the window and supplemented it with extremely boring scenes, characters, and dialogue.

The whole movie is made up of metaphors. The train means the social hierarchy, and the engine may be the system itself that is the origin of this structure or the power to maintain this structure, like capitalism or whatever...
Everyone is saying "the engine(the system) is eternal! you can't survive without the it." Can't we survive if we leave the engine? The polar bear survived. So wouldn't we be able to do it, too?
Is it a revolution that only people's positions change in the existing structure?
Perhaps there are other options...such as going out of the train? whatever it means...

And I find those more engaging than man made apocalypse because it's a far more unpredictable circumstance and it really is out of your hands. Something man made, at least you can follow the steps to fixing something but you really can't do that with nature.

If you get a chance, look up a video that puts forth the theory that this is a sequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It sounds crazy, but the arguments are surprisingly convincing. :)

Blew me away when I watched it. I think the problem (which you guys had) was the lack of a positive payoff after so much suffering. Nooo the hero died. But he died for a good reason. It's a similar ending to Train to Busan, but a whole lot bleaker.
I felt dismay that so much of the train was completely destroyed coupled with the implication that only two people survived. I'd give them 5 days before they die, but who knows.

I’m a big fan of Steampunk and I loved the steampunk elements in this movie. I really wish we had more Steampunk action movies. We get cyberpunk with movies like The Matrix, Bladerunner, Elysium but man could we use more Steampunk films.
Does anyone know of any good steampunk films? Any with action?

Your review is insulating, as its definitely a 9-10 rating id say 9.9 for sheerly that the only soar spot is cgi bug grinder, they look very fake, so it has room to improve and its easily patchable in post.
Why 9.9 out of 10? Well its got some of the strongest world building ive seen, every question is answered… this happens very little in a film. Shooting through the trains windows, you see that the guards immediately start sealing the bullet holes, after the guy, so many little things, that just make this film great. The ending were the rave people come in to fight, its because its the cronol adicts that they just stole from, finally getting ip from their stupor, and making good on their threats.
The movie wizzes by is perfectly cut, and is a break neck pace beginning to end.
The messaging that in the extreme, it takes extreme measures, that this train may be this perfect bunker, but it was ment for x-number of passengers, and cant sustain more, its a dark tale.

Check out the UA-cam video that suggests that SNOWPIERCER is a direct sequel to 1971’s WILLIE WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. The video actually makes some surprisingly good points in favor of this CRAZY IDEA.

Actually the best video about Snowpiercer on UA-cam is "Snowpiercer-Left or Right?" by the channel Every Frame a Painting. In fact, all of Every Frame a Painting is good.
Also I think the dystopia guess is right. The film is a critique of capitalism, just like basically all of Bong's other films.
That reminds me, watch all of Bong's other films! Okja, Parasite, Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother, watch all of them!

I feel like a lot of the components of this film would’ve been more successful if it was Bong’s vision fully realized. unfortunately parts of it were scrubbed by the production company (might’ve been Weinstein? I’m not sure). I even heard Bong had to fight to keep that fish gutting scene in by lying and saying that it was an homage to his father who was a fisherman lol

Yo, I think you guys "get" it - for just the off the cuff thoughts immediately after the first viewing, you guys did great! I've noticed something after watching a few vids on your channel though that I think might be unnoticed by some who will criticize your scores: I think you guys give generally low scores to things across the board - in other words, you don't really grade on a curve and appear to reserve really high scores for like the best of the absolute best in film. I and many others (not everyone, obviously) don't really take this approach. I would give this film a score somewhere in the 9's because well, I legitimately think it quite easily sits in the 99th percentile of all films in terms of objective quality. I am just assuming you guys reserve your "9 and ups" for a very very select few films that make a HUGE impression on you, which is not necessarily wrong - just a different way of grading!
Anyway, glad you liked the film. There's lots of cool youtube video essays about it that dive into the themes and stuff. Cheers :)

Honestly I don't think Yona & Timmy are the only survivors of the train crash. Considering how condensed the back of the train was, like a shield, I think some people may have survived. I think a lot of people in the middle of the train died due to how spacious the cars were.

The film is also a commentary on our world today. We live in nations all over the world that claim civilization and enlightenment while buying products made with what amounts to human slave labor in poorer nations just to save a few dollars. We buy and buy and buy while a huge number of people live in disease ridden poverty, forced to work for Penny's to get us the newest iPhone. The dystopian setting isn't a sci Fi future; it's human nature. The few at the top are burning the world and everyone under them for a few years more wealth and luxury.

You can't compare your rating with IMDB, their range of good ratings is from about 6 to 8.5 due to the averaging of user scores run through whatever formula they use... there are no movies rated in the 9's. The point of the ending is that trying to continue in this insane class system we live is bad and it's better to blow it up and start over. The optimism is that even though humanity might destroy the world, nature will eventually fix it and life will continue and the children will hopefully make a new order to live under.

If you liked it I would recommend the series. It's a prequel of course, showing more about the origin story of the SnowPiercer and the evolution of what transpires to get them to this point. It's actually pretty good.
