Also, if you haven´t already seen it, I´d recommend The Troll Hunter as another found footage movie. It doesn´t even come close to gems like Cloverfield or Rec though....

This had an insane marketing campaign with fake sites & social media profiles. Similar to Blair Witch Project but also required fans to look for clues & solve puzzles etc. All while expanding the backstory of the creature & what started its rampage.
For example, a lot of people assumed the object crashing into the ocean was the creature but the online marketing game revealed it was actually a satellite. Insanely clever way to sell a movie & I wish it happened more often.

I remember the promotion for this movie was soooooo unique. It was interactive and added this interesting layer of lore. The ad campaign went viral because the teasers and websites were made to feel real and not connected to the film since it didn’t even have a name and no one really knew the plot. One of my favorites. This was still so early in the Found Footage genre and yet it was so well done.
Also, fun fact: in the distance at the end, while they’re on the Ferris Wheel in Coney Island, you can see a satellite fall into the ocean. That satellite is what disturbs the monster out of it’s sleep. Oh, and that satellite is from the same company Rob is going to Japan to work for.

To me this is the best use of the found footage style of movie making. The pacing, the single takes... the tension, It all works. Also Marlena's death is one of the most disturbing death on film in horror film making. The implied explosion is truly body horror at it's most terrorizing.

    • @ManubibiWalsh

As much as I love this movie, Blair Witch Project is still the best one. And I’ve seen a bunch of POV movies, you know, but BWP is still the one movie that gives an acceptable and plausible explanation for why they’re still filming, aka Heather says it’s all she has, and also looking at things through a camera helps her detach from it, which is comforting and helps her not lose it completely. Which is a real thing. Presumably, we can also say Mike uses the camera as a filter to cope with the situation at the end.
But here? None of the characters give a convincing explanation for why they’re still filming, and particularly for why they’d run back to Hud to pick up the camera while the monster is right there above them. Like no way in hell is that something that would actually happen.
And also the whole deal of going right where the monster is in the first place on the off chance that Elizabeth could still be alive… hell naw. That’s not something that actually happens.
But Cloverfield definitely tapped on something, that’s for sure. I’m not hating here, far from it.

This film was somewhat inspired by the attacks in NYC during 9/11, specifically the footage from regular citizens on camcorders. This film did a very good job in taking that kind of fear and smartly using the found-footage aspect to bring it life. The lore behind the movie series goes very deep and pretty much requires you to dive deep into old myspace profiles of each movie character to find hidden websites. I.E. You find out that the new job that Rob is going to in Japan is somewhat related to the movie monster.

There were some laughters here and there during those first parts when Hud is fumbling around with the camera at the party, but as soon as shit started to go down the entire auditorium just went quiet. My favorite thing about this movie is that you never get a clear look at the monster like you do in films like Godzilla, it’s all from the perspective of someone being a witness to the chaos. When is saw the trailer to this movie while my dad and I watched TRANSFORMERS in 2007 we didn't what it was about!
People thought it was a Godzilla movie or an Ultron movie.
Even fans on the internet drew the monster as a giant mutated Blue Whale, but now it looks like a giant Bat like creature with skin flaps on the sides of it's neck, pale skin, and eyes like a great white shark.
It even has large dog sized parasites that hunt in the dark!

  • @The_RedVIII
    @The_RedVIII 2 роки тому +18

Everything about this movie was and is just genius. The idea to put the audience into this small perspective looking up at a giant monster, it's amazing. It makes you actually feel small, being in the middle of a giant monster attack. Like you said, it's basically the only kaiju movie that is actually scary. Then of course the way it was marketed etc. Just genius. And Matt Reeves obviously went on to create the incredible Planet of the Apes movies, and I really can't wait for his Batman movie.
10 Cloverfield Lane is also pretty good, even though it's a completely different movie. The Cloverfield Paradox actually connects more to this movie, but unfortunately it's not really that great.

I love this film so much. it's one of my favourite Found Footage films. Also, the sequel you were talking about at the start was 'The Cloverfield Paradox'. It was the third film in the franchise, and was originally called 'The God Particle'. The 'marketing' was literally a trailer that was revealed during the SuperBowl, with a message at the end of it saying, essentially, the film would be on Netflix at the end of the Superbowl.
EDIT: The Godzilla references are intentional: J.J.Abrams wanted to this to be Godzilla in America.

Man, the marketing for this film and 10 Cloverfield Lane is what really made them. To average viewers, Cloverfield is just a found footage monster movie, but to JJ Abrams/Bad Robot/ARG fans, it's so... so much more. The amount of backstory and lore that surrounds these films is so much more extensive than what is shown, there's so much average watchers don't know! Watching these movies in theaters after participating in the ARGs felt like being in on some big secret no one else knew about 😭 The nostalgia is REAL! One of the cool things in this movie is that there are so few shots of the actual creature. Most of what we get to see, at least in the beginning, are quick glimpses where the creature is mostly obscured by buildings. That makes every shot of the creature more exciting and keeps you guessing as to what it looks like, because it has a weird non-standard shape as far as movie monsters go.

Anyone who'd like to see The Descent, only it's in a series of genuine tunnels underneath Sydney (I think it's Sydney) in Australia, Journalists looking into rumours and a conspiracy about stopping underground developments. Creepy AF.

Going into the subway might have made sense at that moment, but going down the tunnel was stupid. It's dark, nowhere to go if you ran into trouble, and no idea what was going on topside. Dude would have been on his own. That said staying on the streets or cutting through alleys and building would have made a lot more sense.
But then if characters in a movie didn't do stupid stuff...

It could very easily be argued that The Mist (2007), Cloverfield (2008) and Stranger Things (2016-present) are part of the same universe. All three concern Government/Armed Forces containment of Lovecraftian monsters from another dimension. Indeed, speaking of Lovecraft, all three titles fit quite neatly into the Cthulhu Mythos.
