The Swift only really comes alive on really tight and very twisty roads. But then it is loads of fun. You need to use the high revs from 4000 rpm, where the VVTI kicks in, up to the 7000 rpm redline. The HP peak is at 6900 rpm! It's gearbox is better, if you shift it more quickly. Be careful with the clutch though. It really hates high rev starts. The steering may not have that much road feedback, but it is very precise. If you drive the Swift sporty, it delivers. If you don't, then it's a dependable, a bit dull commuter. It's only sporty and fun, if you ask it to be. But then it's extremely fun!
Great comparison review. I would also mentioned which would holds its value better over the next few years, I feel the Ford fiesta would command stronger money. I’d go Suzuki swift based on design and Japanese reliability
The Fiesta, is quite nice but I have no first hand experience. However, I have owned the Swift since 2018 and had a Suzuki Ignis Sport before that (2007-2018). My Swift is used for everything from work and shopping to around five track days every year. They are relatively simple cars that are rugged, reliable, versatile and fun to drive. Suzuki, cars have given me a lot of fun over the years with minimal aggravation.
I had a 2007 Swift Sport manual for a few years. Really liked it. Wife never liked the front seats as she is a bit "broader across the beam" as she put it.
Love this format - definitely do more like this, in whatever segments seem appropriate! Genuine question (it'd matter to me)... Is the fiesta actual leather or imitation? Real leather I value, imitation "leather" seems quite prone to ripping, and I'd rather have cloth than imitation leather every time.
Driving this generation of Suzuki Swift at lower RPM and expect sporty behaviour is funny. This car comes alive and more responsive at higher revs and speed. This review is not satisfactory because it doesnt test the limits of both very good cars.
That model Fiesta had hydraulic power steering, hence the feedback and engagement. Virtually everthing now uses electric steering with little, to no feedback. Only appropriate weighting, which is not the same. Explains why so many cars fail to offer driver satisfaction - if you're a bit old school (over 45). Buyers now want SUV's full of pointless tech. The connected driving experience has now been lost forever.
The mountune version is 155bhp, mine has climate control and heated screen , also cruise control so I’m guessing the fiesta in the video is a basic one .
Good video bud. I’d have to go with the fiesta if it was my choice. There good fun the fiestas . Never been in an s1600 or a newer swift but the fiesta ST is very good fun for a hatchback so I’d imagine the s1600 can be thrown about pretty well….(in Mexico obviously 😇)
Most Fiesta sold in North America came with 1.6. Mine also has the 6 speed power shift transmission. Again most NA Fiesta came with this transmission. While power shift feels a little clunky for the first 2 shifts once you get into 3rd it's a great with lots of pep.
I used to own a Fiesta S1600, actually 134bhp, over standard Zetec S which was the 118, plus had shorter gearing for better acceleration. Was great value, even when new. Nice comparison 👍
Not all S1600’s had 118bhp as mentioned elsewhere from mid 2011 was 132bhp with all the same in house Ford tuning mods/ECU remap/closer ratio 5-speed box as the “metal” which followed. Way to tell the 132bhp version is that they hard different A/C controls with full climate control with temperature display middle of A/C vs the 118bhp one as in video does not.
Its like driving a 15 year old gsx-r vs a Ducati. On the Suzuki you are afraid of yourself - with the Ducati you are afraid of the bike breaking down. Easy choose as used buys. I do not se the complaints about the engine needing high revs as valid. Had this and currently the next gen 1.4 This one is more fun but the 1.4 is faster. Just keep it above 4500 on small roads and its great fun all the time.
I've got a SSS and it's a Labrador at low revs, but turns into a Bull Terrier when you spank it. Put the Swift in the right hands on the twisty stuff and the Fiesta will roll itself into a hedge trying to keep up, even with Ford's physics-defying chassis. I've got a Ford Tourneo Custom Sport which I love so I'm certainly not anti-Ford. Worth pointing out as well that the Ford was over £1500 more expensive than the 3 door Swift from new. To anyone with a MKII SSS, I'd thoroughly recommend paying the £300 for a Stage 1 Performance Remap plus a K&N Panel Filter. DON'T be tempted to take the airbox out and put one of those stupid cone filters in. It looks cool but just sucks in hot air from the engine bay, which has less oxygen in it. The Remap increases the bhp to 150 and turns the Swift into the Hot Hatch it deserves to be. The power now cuts in at 2500 rpm rather than 4000 and the thing revs like a two-stroke. Amazingly, it also improves fuel efficiency. Only drawback is you might need to change insurance company's as not all of them cover modified cars. No significant increase in the price though 👍
Having driven both. Swift more fun, but the Fiesta drives better and to this day a mk 7/7.5 still drives beautifully for a smaller car. Don't care about the dash, the mk 7 is just a lovely looking car and hasn't been bettered to this day imo.
To be honest I had the previous gen swift and while it had some qwerks, I felt it was like a go kart and always asked to be thrashed. It was great fun and sounds like the swift sport your talking about has lost a little bit of what it had by making it more appealing
Sorry, this posted on the Freelander video as it had auto started before I posted! I'd choose the Swift... rev limiter in the Swift is 7,400, Fiesta 6,900. Having driven both, Swift is better
i'd take my 2000 polo gti over any newer 1.6 n/a car, 125hp but with plenty of low end torque and quite alot lighter, my only issue with my car is gearbox issues are very common
Torque on a naturally aspirated small engine is a bit like trying to ask for fuel efficiency on a huge litre engine.. not what it’s designed for. You have to work the car 100% to get the feel for it. It’s not the torque it’s overall experience from the car.
We only seem to get the commuter versions of those cars here - both of those look a step up in the sport department- just based on looks the Ford would be my choice
I recently bought a 2012 Fiesta 1.6 manual in Australia for $6000, but had to replace the air con compressor for $1700. I realy like the car. The Suzuki Swifts are much more expensive second hand. Ford got a bad name with their dual clutch automatics in the Feista and Focus models between 2010 to 2017. The 1.0 L turbo has hood power but poor reliability beyond 100,000 km.
Fiesta would be way more reliable in the long run I work at ford and that 1.6na engine has been in fiestas since the mk4 The s1600 model should have the stripes
The Swift will be just as reliable, and parts are pretty cheap if you do have something go wrong in it since it's a Suzuki (depends on if your country has a good supply of parts). It just comes down to preference here.
@@ShiftingMetal The thing is with cars like that, you won’t see the appeal of them unless you really wind it all the way to the redline, at least through the first couple gears. I found your thoughts on the engine in the fiesta interesting though, quite unexpected actually.

I've driven/owned both. To start, I had a ZC31 non sport (1.3) and not the ZC32 but I have also driven a 31 sport. Looking at the footage of the 32 sport, it has had a huge step up on the 31 sport. Looks a lot more premium than the 31. The 31 looked and felt so cheap and tacky and the driving position was horrid. Between the 2, I would actually go for the Ford (which is surprising as I'm a Jap fan) as overall, the Ford feels more premium, it feels more together as a car and you can feel what the car is doing a lot more. I love a heavy clutch, heavy accelerator, heavy brakes and a harder gearbox as I feel more connected to the car. In the Swift (both the 31 and 31s), they just didn't have any feel to them. Gearboxes were sloppy, accelerator was like that of a driving arcade in the amusements and the brakes although good, just didn't fill me with confidence. And the clutch, well, the Swifts felt like they didn't have a clutch. Just felt like a dormant peddle (and both swifts had brand new clutches in as they both had engine replacements at the same time) But yea, overall, the Ford just feels better in every way shape and form. But I wouldn't mind testing a 32S to see if it is as big of a step up over the 31S as it seemed.
Drag rqce the swift and fiesta and youll see the swift leaves it for dead. Aont no fiesta keeping up with that swift. You could tell the bias from the stsrt of this video.
I remember Clarkson being chased round a shopping centre by exactly same Fiesta by a big yank muscle car. Wish still did 1.6 normally aspirated. Since the. All rubbish. Suzukis = Japanese does it’s job
This guy drive like my gran and shes dead. I have a swift and on a tight b road warmed up its loads of fun. Its a vvt engine and comes alive over 5000rpm and was made for british country roads.
Imagine thinking a 1.6 NA engine is going to pull hard in 3rd gear at 30mph lol... Like all NA hot hatches, they are engineered to be revved to the moon.
I am suprised some people choose the swift, the old swift looks classy, but this with its big ass ugly headlights, looks goofy for more money, i dont get it.
the Fiesta is disposable, which makes more sense as a second car. You wouldn't treat the Swift like you'd treat the Fiesta, which is why the Fiesta would be the driver's choice :)
Dude drive the Swift properly for heavens sake!!. You are saying it is not torquey....It won't be its an NA 1.6. Plus i can hear you are changing gear at like 5100rpm. Rev it man!!. Take it to 7000 at least once and maybe try throwing it into a bend once and you may like it. I think you are the only person to review one of these and not be giggling like a school girl. Poor review from when you get behind the wheel. It looked like last of the summer wine were asked to do a road test.
I don't get why anyone would choose the Swift tbh, it looks quite ugly, just a box on wheels. It genuinely looks like the Fiesta from like 2005 or something, a generation before this one. Whereas this Fiesta looks like an actual sporty hatchback
People's tastes differ. Reading at other comments, people that prefers the Swift instead of the Fiesta instead made Fiesta's racer looks it's negative part, while Swift is said to be more matured while also still looking different. Personally I prefer the Swift because it seems a little bit more reserved up front than the Fiesta but has some business in the back. Dare I say in contrast to your comment and the Fiesta, I think the Swift looks more proportionate and pretty in it's subtlety (Fiesta is a bit "loud" in looks, and the rear for some reason is giving me a sort of feeling that made it look like the car is imbalanced) so I sort of have the same opinion as a few others. Plus, pretty reliable. I dont exactly have direct experience with the Swift Sport, but I've driven and be driven in many different Suzuki's before - all very long lasting and fine cars with not much to ask of the owners in return. Fiesta is also reliable but not on the same level. The Swift would also be more "spirited" in fun driving since it's best performance shows up between 5k to 7k RPM, encouraging you to step on it rather than going low.
honestly... the fiesta may have a less fancy or premium interior but if we talk about the chassis then sorry guys but the swift is a pile of shit😂 if u want handling and fun choose the fiests.
Well I mean... Both cars have gone into rallying as a works car by both manufacturers. Both have great chassis for handling from both sides that have used them for fun and sporting so not sure what you're talking about. It's just that the Fiesta has more grunt on the low end range while the Swift comes alive at the high end of the rev range.
@@milnat596 I've ridden in both before too (well, kinda for the Fiesta... I've ridden in a Fiesta ST, not S1600), too just saying as opinion - I think both cars are equally good (if it's S1600 instead of my experience in ST - Swift Sport got no chance against ST) with different characteristics.
I’d go with the Swift to be honest the trim on the Swift looks a bit more expensive, in my opinion and probably more reliable 🎉
Can’t argue with that!
Ford is very reliable on these older engines

I am a Suzuki man had a Ford Fiesta it was the biggest pile of junk l have ever bought and we bought it brand new and in Australia there are much more Suzuki Swifts than Ford Fiestas we have a Suzuki Beleno GLX and its been very good in Australia we appreciate a reliable car plenty of Suzukis Toyotas Mazdas and Hondas and if these two cars were at a dealership in Australia the Suzuki Swift would defently sell more than the Ford Fiesta and would sell quicker than the Ford Fiesta most Australians a smart when it comes to buying cars that is people who know about cars will buy the most reliable cars such as Toyota Honda Mazda and Suzuki the most reliable brands you can there are people who buy the South Korean makes and the Chinese made cars they are not car savy they also buy Nissans and Mitsubishis some of them are OK nut not as good as Suzuki Honda Toyota and Mazda and l know many people who own the best cars from Japan our daughter drives a Mazda 3 and our son has a Suzuki Jimny and l have a hobby vehicle a 1997 Toyota Hilux a vehicle that is selling for good money
Keep an eye out for the man in the gimp suit in those lanes 🤨 I think the swift would squash him better than the fee fee
Haha, I’d love to have caught the Somerset gimp before the police did, that would have made a good video 🤜
@@ShiftingMetal hi mate, can you recommend anything for a first car with a budget of £1k to 1.4k?
@@tonyhartshorne5862 C1/107/Aygo got to be your best bet!
Do you have anything like that? Maybe trade prices? I’m only up the road
Ford fiesta is much better tbh it actually feels like a sport 😊
fiesta for me
I've driven/owned both.
Just felt like a dormant peddle (and both swifts had brand new clutches in as they both had engine replacements at the same time)
But yea, overall, the Ford just feels better in every way shape and form. But I wouldn't mind testing a 32S to see if it is as big of a step up over the 31S as it seemed.
Suzuki Swift all the way up!!!
Swift.
That opening shot makes the cars look huge and makes you tiny😅😂
Haha, I’ve not mastered the ‘presenter’ angles 😅
@@ShiftingMetal 😂love it, always appreciate a good optical illusion 👍
Swift all day long drove both myself ford is ok but I tell you you got to rev swift and it will blow that ford away
Yup, Swift. The Fiesta is too much a child of the naughties, interior-wise. Outdated now, like a Nokia 3310.
Of the two cars which is going to be the most sought-after though?
I’d quite like a Fiesta and Nokia 3310 to be honest! 😂
100% the swift, much more of a grown up car compared to the boy racer fiesta
And less likely to get stolen like the Fiesta
Great video - as a Mk 5 Mondeo driver - id take the feista
Drag rqce the swift and fiesta and youll see the swift leaves it for dead. Aont no fiesta keeping up with that swift. You could tell the bias from the stsrt of this video.
i think you should refrian saying 70 or 80 because there are young people watching you tube and you say 80 thats a big NO NO .
i would choose the swift not a fan of fiesta
fiesta
I remember Clarkson being chased round a shopping centre by exactly same Fiesta by a big yank muscle car. Wish still did 1.6 normally aspirated. Since the. All rubbish. Suzukis = Japanese does it’s job
Swift
This guy drive like my gran and shes dead. I have a swift and on a tight b road warmed up its loads of fun. Its a vvt engine and comes alive over 5000rpm and was made for british country roads.
The swift is a brilliant daily drive , and so cheap to run you want soul spend another 5 grand buddy 🙃
Imagine thinking a 1.6 NA engine is going to pull hard in 3rd gear at 30mph lol... Like all NA hot hatches, they are engineered to be revved to the moon.
Just imagine
I am suprised some people choose the swift, the old swift looks classy, but this with its big ass ugly headlights, looks goofy for more money, i dont get it.
suzuki is miles better
the Fiesta is disposable, which makes more sense as a second car.
Suzuki wins no doubt.
Fiesta ❤❤
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🚘
Schwiifft
😂
British will always go for Ford
Ford all day
Fiesta all day much more reliable also
honestly... the fiesta may have a less fancy or premium interior but if we talk about the chassis then sorry guys but the swift is a pile of shit😂 if u want handling and fun choose the fiests.
@@PlatinumNath I'm just saying that for me the swift is a pile of shit..
fiesta is better for me and looks even better...
and btw i tried both.
@@PlatinumNath how did u ride a car? teach me pls.
@@milnat596 ride as in drive (and subsequently be driven in), not literally giddyup on top of it like it's a glorified ATV. Don't bait me.
