Manufacturers should be ashamed of themselves making it so hard to replace an important day to day item on their cars.
Too right Duncan, they don't make em like they used to, nowadays they just wanna keep you coming back to their garage for any little job. All a money making scam. Hit subscribe for us 👌👌
To hell with them. It took me a few videos as well to get this. What the other videos about other models of golf were much different to mine
@@keithp6699same here, mines the hard one mk6 golf, it failed on the way to mot test centre, I was 15 minis early with an auto supplies right next to the centre but I couldn't change the bulb so I got a major fail requiring a retest, VW should be ashamed for making the bulb almost impossible to change without taking front bumper and lamp out, the lamp had several bulbs inside it from others that have tried to replace the bulb in the past before I bought it. The MOT test centre should also be ashamed for failing a car during daylight hours for a failed bulb.
Thanks!
OMG THANK YOU SOOOO MUUUUUUUCHHHH!!! I appreciate that soooo muuuchhh!! I’m so happy to have helped! Thank youuuuu!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝
Thanks again!
My genuine pleasure and thank you so so much!!
I have a Golf 7.5 and my clever friend has just replaced all my headlight bulbs for me this afternoon I was going to take the wheel arch liner out to get at and see the dipped beam bulbs from behind. But he tried the above down method successfully. He's a clever chap and can fix anything. I made him a lasagne to take home as payment 🍲
Credit to the VW design engineers for making it possible to replace a headlamp bulb without removing the engine
😅😅😅😅 credit to them indeed loll!
Really useful, thanks. I used a cork. Pit a slit in a cork to give leverage.
Love it! Brilliant way to get leverage, that will be useful for others too!👌👌 thanks for your helpful comment 👌👌
Us winos need 2 stick together! Since being childless hence no duplo blocks, your cork idea was smashing! Reinforced with elec. tape before cutting slit..done in under 2 minutes! Cheers!
Thank you so so much! I was ready to give up until I tried the Duplo trick!
Never give up 💪💪 (well maybe sometimes, it defo can be the right thing to do sometimes) Glad it’s sorted!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 happy to help!!! 🥳🥳🥳
Thank you very much. This video helped me very much and I'm happy that my fingers are long enough. It was close.
Go on Ernie! 💪💪 thanks for the kind comment and I’m glad that I’ve been able to help 💯💯 glad it’s all sorted for you
Thank you for this video and showing correct orientation and turning direction for housing unit which helped immensely. I struggled for literally 2hrs off and on but FINALLY got it. In spite of getting the housing unit in proper place with the 2 o’clock position I didn’t realize you also have to give it a little push in on topside of it (towards the front of car) for the top part of housing to click all way in and be properly seated so it can be tightened till the “click” happens. Before I kept trying to thread gently and wiggle it into place and only bottom part of unit was going into the threads correct (and it was lopsided downward and not turning or working). Good luck everyone!
TThank you for the explanations about the right direction of rotation of the bulb holder throw the mounting hole. It really helps.
Some other tips that helped me:
- handle the bulb with gloves to avoid slipping hands and remove the fuse box cover to save a little space.
- I taped the bulb to this support so that it would not come off (the first try I almost lost the bulb without its support under the engine). Look at the insertion of the bulb through the headlight to position it in the correct axis. Good luck.
Thanks for your helpful comment 🤝🤝
Thanks for this video. I am about to operate on mine. It is refreshing to see a video to the point, informative and very well filmed considerably the environment. I usually avoid watching videos as they are often filled with information as to how to release the bonnet, where the light is, a list of outlets where you can buy duplex from etc etc. I have usually fallen asleep before the work actually starts. This video however is simply perfect. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for your kind comment John 👌👌 I'm here to help where I can and I'm glad I've helped you 🤝🤝 have a great Friday and a greater weekend!
Many thanks - your video gave me the confidence to help out my neighbour who blew the very same bulb on her Golf - an H7 bulb by the way (some models apparently are different).
A few points, and one MAJOR help to others:
If you make a tool, which is what I did, it is easy peazy. I found a piece of plywood about 5cm (2") square, about 10mm thick, although that is not critical, and sawed a slot at one end in it - say, 2.5cm by 5mm (1 inch by 3/16"). That gave a grip on the plastic tab to twist it (anticlockwise about 30 degrees to remove), which worked fine without needing Lego. If you are a whizz with your fingers, put a dab of Tippex first on the upper surface of the tab, before removing it. I didn't, but would try for next time, to help get it back first time right with the replacement bulb.
But MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: you can remove the fusebox cover and gain a heck of a lot of free space to manoeuvre the bulb holder out and in! Look at the black box-like structure towards the bulkhead (see video). There are two knurled bridge-shaped bumps, with marks to indicate Lock/Unlock. PULL them towards you. They may be a bit stiff, then will let go satisfyingly. Don't be wearing a metal bracelet or wristwatch, though. The fusebox cover can be lifted clear, revealing the fuses (a handy thing to know anyway). Then you can take off the lamp's rubber cover, use a torch and get in to swap the bulb/holder MUCH MORE EASILY!
Another tip - I used a smear of Vapo-Rub (didn't have any Vaseline to hand) to put on the bulb contacts and the two small bump contacts of the holder, so it all went in smoothly. But remember, keep your fingers off the bulb when inserting it. If you accidentally touch it, clean it with a lint-free cloth, otherwise the bulb's life will be shortened. Sweat/grease are not good for halogen bulbs.
Thanks for your kind helpful comment, hit subscribe 🤝🤝
First, take off the fuse box cover, that will gain you about a half inch. Then take the three top screws off the headlamp assembly, that will get you another half inch.
This is great!! Will help a lot of people!! Please hit subscribe 🥳🥳
My tip put a big rag under the bulb housing so if you drop anything it wont disappear into the ABYSS 😱
Thank you! Taking the screws off the headlamp assembly helped immensely! 😊
Really helpful orientation tip you gave @4:05, thanks! I didn't have a lego block, but... Iwas able to use your tip to get the job done. One thing that also helped was... shining a flashlight into the front of the headlight, as a visual aid in guiding the new bulb into the hole in the back of the headlight. Cheers!
Good video especially showing exactly how to put replacement in and how to turn it cheers
And thank you for the Kind Comment Sir! Happy to help! 🤝🤝
Mate u are a legend and that tip at the end showing orientation of holder on re entry made all the difference.... Done it without the lego piece but removed the fusecovee for thag tiny bit of extra leverage 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thank you for the video. I was able to remove the old bulb but now I am struggling to install the new one. Absolutely terrible access and no visibility.
Yep exactly why I made the video, such a badly engineered light bulb change, I hope you manage to install the replacement soon
Yes! I did it.
I ended up improvising a few tools, two in wood, one in PVC pipe and one in steel. In the end the wooden one did the job. I am tempted to patent it. The passenger side was much easier.
New century cars are not designed for easy maintenance.
I just undid 4 screws from the wheel well guard. Easy peasy for both sides... I turned the wheel full each way to give lots of room depending on the side. If you really want to get fancy, you can remove the wheel and you have all the room, but you don't need to.
Thank you! Took a few minutes of fidgeting with it but eventually I got the bulb in with this tactic
Excellent thanks I will give this method a try
I was about to do that this afternoon but my friend came round and did the job for me from above. It wasn't easy and he has fingers with many CV joints which helps, X ray vision too.
this video is truly a lifesaver 😢
YOU are the lifesaver ❤️❤️ thank you for your kind comment 🤝🤝🤝
I’m having the same battle ‘shit’ on my Audi A3.. Some folk said remove the 3 bottom screws of wheel arch cover for easy access.
Fingers crossed it works. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Dude! you just saved me 750KR (about 70$).. I have no knowledge but managed to change the bulbs on my Golf MK5 thanks to your video!
Much love from Sweden❤
Wanna send me £10? 😉😉😉 😂😂😂 Only joking lool! I'm very happy to have saved you money and happy to help 🎉🎉🎉🥳🥳 thank you for your kind comment! And I'm glad your bulb is fixed 🎉🎉🥳🥳 have a great day!!
The duplo trick!!! Thank you. Now a yellow one is permanently stashed in the car!
You're welcome Ivan 💪💪 please subscribe pleeaaasseee
Your a Top G thanks
Fair play mate . Saw this after some other video saying to remove the whole headlight
Yeah I saw some advising to remove the bumper and headlight, F that lol
Please subscribe 👌
Super video thanks, I've found from painful experience, that its worth using one of those little mirrors on a telescopic rod to be able to look at the inside of the hiusing before you start, just to check out if there's any likely difficulties.
Thank you, this video helped me on my 2015 MK VII GTI. Reay liked how told us to put the bulb holder back in with the tab up[.
🎉🎉💡💡glad I could help and glad it's all sorted for you 🤝🤝👌
Thank you very much for your kind comment 👌👌
Thanks! No Duplo so used a 6cm piece of wood and sawed a groove in it. Was out in seconds 🙂
Before changing the headlight bulb, consider removing the fuse box cover. This simple step can provide better access and visibility to the headlight assembly, making the replacement process smoother and more efficient.
darn, got no luck with my 2009 touran, this killer side, my left thumb already swollen after 2 hr of trying, the other side is easy peasy, try it again tomorrow, fuck em
@sofronius2 go on Sofronius!! 💪💪
Remove that fuse box gives you abit more space.
What bulb type is used for high beam?
I think it’s another standard h7 bulb but I’m not 100% sure, I sold the car 🤝🤝
Please SUBSCRIBE, it's totally free. Thanks for watching and I hope I've helped 🎉🎉
Mine a 2008 model and doesnt have that attachment
Hello every one..!! I've just made my own tool for that job..!! You need a piece of wood/plastic round/Square aprx Ø 30 mm and aprx 40-45 mm long..
Mill/ saw a grove aprx 10 mm deep 3 mm wide press it in over the bulb holder "finn" and you have perfect control to take it out and put it back again.. !! You are welcome..!! 😊👍
Good job! Showing the orientation of the bulb and which way to turn it made it simple. Still difficult to get to on the driver side but your description was great help. Thank you
You're very welcome 👍 happy to help and glad it's sorted for you!! Please subscribe if you can I'm trying to get to 1000, eventually lol
Thank you very much for your comment, appreciated 👌👌
Good Job Dear 👍
Thank you Khuram Bhai! Please subscribe yaar!
OMG this lego solution is great! thanks . i was struggling to put it back in audi a3 8p
Glad it helped 💪💪 that's a nice car 👌
Nicely done with the LEGO piece. I used a yo-yo
Make sense why i was not able to change it 😂 i watched this video thought il manage and only got around to take the cap off that dident make it back on neither
😂😂😂😭😭
Lool get that cap back on its the waterproofing etc lol! 😂
Soo badly designed isn't it! They want people to take the whole light out just to change a bulb! 😭😭
@@ColdStream il have to go garage i cant do it 😅 im in a instructor you see and it would be handy for me to learn how to do this stuff so i can pre buy bulbs and do it my self
@Taslema22 ahh do it at a garage 👌 the instructor becomes the instructee 😂😂 I believe you haven't subscribed! I might have promoted your instructing 😎😂😂 (too late now!😂)
@@ColdStream hahaah! Do make like basic videos for beginners lol essential things of how to do certain things as im making regular visits to garage i just dont have the luxury of time 😓 and Lool yes i get humbled all the time because there is always someone who knows more 😍

I changed that bulb a year ago only with my fingers, it was very difficult, it hurted to me and i spent like an hour, but i got it done :´)
Nice video
😂 you're a real trooper! 💪 I aspire to manage that one day 💪💪🤩
I did the same in 5mins😅
Wv in general are fucknuts when it comes to their lightbulbs. Same struggle on a caddy I used for work. Got big hands as well. No fun at all.
I've the exact same problem! Thought about getting some 90 degree pliers, but I still don't think I'll be able to get access. I'm on the hunt for some Duplo now :)
Try anything you can 👍 it's such a strange way to fit a bulb, something which should be really simple. I almost dropped the Duplo into the engine 😂😭. The Duplo worked really well for me 👍
I used the zebra legs
Thanks, legend
Can’t beat the zebra legs 😅👌👌 glad it’s sorted
Pretty sure my Golf has been fitted with the wrong bulb holder. Mine has a much shorted handle and seems to be wider because no matter what way you hold it, once it’s removed from the fixture, it won’t come out. I’m fuming, spent about an hour trying to sort it. VW will be getting an earful soon
Have fun with VW Customer service, worst experience of my life, here are some highlights: never called me back when a complaint is in place, closed the complaint without agreement from me, Claimed to call me but no call was made, when you have a fault the only VW garage that can work on it is the one that’s worked on it previously 😂😂 so once you’ve had one bunch of jokers on your car, you’re stuck with them. And then here’s the best, I went to buy a car, test drive it with a family member, put a deposit down and then they sold it 😂😂 ready for the punchline? They claimed to have not sold it, but couldn’t sell it to me as it wasn’t road worthy 😂😂 they put me and a family member in a dangerous car. Reviews for VW customer service are crazy bad
@@ColdStream I’ve had my own shocking experiences with them, it’s their name that saves them. I like driving and my car, but I hate everything there is to do with cars, insurance, dealers and mechanics are just sharks out to get you, it drives me mad!
@trevnevit123 yes 100% agree totally, I wish there was some way to guarantee they wouldn’t rob us
Thanks just did our Golf driver side headlight. I used a 1.5mm x 3cm x ~10cm strip of metal folded over tight and then loosened a bit which provided a tight fit on the plastic flap. I din't get much of a click, so I tried a longer piece of metal for more leverage but still nothing. See how it goes...
The commentary 😂
Can you tell that I'd had enough of that car?🤣🤣🤣 sold it🥳🥳🥳🤣
@@ColdStream yeah lol the way u just stared at the light bulb 😂
@@Taslema22 lool the way I stared at it lol I bet the frustration is visible lool!
@@ColdStream it isss
@@Taslema22 😂😂😂 I'm going to have to watch this video back! 😂😂😂
The golf is such a nice looking car and a fun drive, I just had a Dodgy model had to sell, try and get that cap back on before the snow and ice starts 💪💪
I change it in 10 min without tools
Yes it can be done. My friend did mine this afternoon.
Thanks a lot! Thankfully I’m father of two kids so I have access to a lot of duplo😂 they should include a few with the car 😂
They really Should include it with the car lol!! That's a brilliant idea! It genuinely works so so well!! 😂💪💪
Got it all out. Now how do i get the old bulb out and put new one in
What have you got all out?
@@ColdStream sorry done. Just had to pull the bulb from the black plastic thing

Ace...German engineering? I quote "In 1968, second-generation owner Godtfred Kirk Christiansen provided the idea of hollowing out the studs on the Duplo bricks to make them compatible with the system, in addition can be used as a bulb remover" Danish engineers then !!
For those I've helped 🤝 if you want to buy me a coffee 🥳🥳 use the SUPER THANKS🎉it's the heart dollar icon 🤝
I changed the bulb and it still didn’t work. After much investigation I found one of the power contact points on the socket had melted slightly and wasn’t making contact. Need a new socket.
😔 I've been there, had it where the bulb was melted/fused to the socket.
I hope it's a quick easy fix for ya 👍 thanks for your comment @tomfinn6579 please hit subscribe 🥳🥳🎉
@@ColdStream I ended up taking the bumper cover off so I could remove the headlight assembly.
Well at least you've done it 💪💪 it's a shame so much work was needed on it, in a previous car when I had this problem I was able to replace the socket without removing anything, VW should be ashamed of this design
perfect instructions thanks
so im fucked, i have a golf 7 variant 2017 and the same light but its different a bit, the plastic is connected to a wire so i cant take it out like that, and my bulb doesnt come off easy, it has some sort of mehanism that i cant figure out or find online solution, but still wont go to a mechanic i know it cant be that hard. Any solution? tips?
same here, just spent an hour trying. Got the bulb out but becase the wire is so short i can't get it to click back into the housing
@@katysimmons9218 Having same issue. Cannot get the lamp out of the holder, looks like it will snap. Did you mange to get it out in the end?
I managed to fo it with just my hand by just pushing the top side with my finger😅
Wish I could have managed that! 👌💪💪 Please hit subscribe 👌🥳
No, the hard one is the Mk7 with HID. The entire assembly must be removed from the car.
They need to be called out for that really bad design, they should be making that easy for their customers
Bro was just supposed to remove the computer box cover
Bro made a video for people who don’t want to remove more things. And for people who have big hands, I suppose it’s easy if you hand little hands.
Now how do I get my hands on a single Duplo piece.. 🤔
