The salts and oils from your skin will damage the bulb by causing the heat to concentrate. I wish I knew that before the install! At least this video should help you not make the same mistake. Use rubber gloves when handling the new bulb. Thanks for the support 😎 Let's get to 1,000 subscribers!

For those with larger hands, I found it useful to take the top of the fuse cover off, and then remove the side of the fuse box closest to the headlight (press in on the lower section where a retaining tab stops it slipping up). Gives you just enough room to get it in a bit easier.

You are a genius sir. Last time I changed one of these it took me about an hour and a lot of skinned knuckles. Your simple hints enabled me to do it in 5 minutes. I would add that it really helps to pay attention to the position of the holder when you are removing it, makes it much easier to put it back exactly right the first time. There are a bunch of other videos on here that go through a huge process of removing the headlight unit entirely just to change a bulb - not necessary in the slightest.

Thank you!!! I’m a 58 year old Mom and you showed me how to do it. Took me 15 min just maneuvering the new bulb in. It is a little tough to know if your plastic holder is in the right place but here’s a TIP:
When you first take out the old bulb, notice how the plastic holder is oriented as you pull it out then try to hold it the same way going in. Then twist clockwise just a bit till it stops.
Having small hands helps. The rubber caps go back on easily. Thanks for the help.

Nice video! IMPORTANT point to remember: The clockwise/counterclockwise directions are oriented facing the headlight outlet!!!!! I.E.: OUT is counterclockwise or clockwise if you are facing the vehicle. IN is the opposite! IMPORTANT to know when working in such a SMALL space! Thanks for sharing guys! Be save out there! :)

This worked well for me. Took about 10 minutes total on my 2015 Golf TDI. Taking the bulbs out took about a minute for both sides. Getting them back in was a little trickier. The passenger side, which has easier access took longer. There were 2 wires in the way preventing the bulb from going back into the headlight assembly so I has to push them to the side and then it when in easy. The driver's side was real tight. I paid attention to the orientation of the bulb when I took it out to make it easier to put back. I felt it go in and could visually see the bulb on the outside of the headlight assembly sitting in the right place and then just had to back it up a little, turned it clockwise, and it locked right in. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video, it helped immensely. However, I fumbled and cussed with my big hands. The thing that helped me get the bulb back in was to use a flashlight. I shined the light from the outside at a slight angle. It provided just enough light in the hole to help me get the bulb through. Once the bulb was through the hole it was a matter of feeling to get it seated before the turn to lock it.

Thank you so much for the video and to everyone who's left comments! Canadian 2016 VW golf driver's side bulb - got the bulb out relatively easily but no luck getting it back in. Tried going from the inside a million times and the bulb kept falling off. Finally jacked the driver's side tire to allow space, then removed enough screws off the wheel liner to get access and saw there was a wire in the way. From the tire side it took about 30 seconds to replace.

I almost didn’t click because it seemed impossible but this young man made me believe in myself and it worked! I think the key is not only having smaller hands but also carefully examining the position it was in when it came out. So you kind of have to visualize that in your head while putting it in. In my life I realized that not everyone is capable of that lol.

  • @cymru507

Useful video. Thanks. On a 2016 Golf, the working space between the fuse box and the headlight housing is very tight... not a job for giant hands. Getting the old bulb out was frustrating, but pretty straight forward. Frustrating because once you back the light out, there is very little room to turn it and remove it. Two fingers is about all you can use or right-angle pliers grabbing the flange of the socket. Once you have the new bulb inserted into the socket but before you try to install it into the housing, do yourself a favour and make sure you line up the notches in the socket with the notches on the housing. Knowing where they are will save you a lot of time fiddling around and hoping to find the fit.

Thanks for the video, it was pretty helpful. I struggled for 30 minutes when putting back the bulb before realizing that two tiny cables got moved and were preventing the plastic thingy to click in place. If you struggle for a while, do yourself a favor and take a video with your phone to check that there's nothing in the way. Also, if you shine a light from the top-right of the fuse box you can actually see the hole and get an idea of how to orient the bulb when putting it back in.

I tried to change the passenger side bulb but there was no way I could get my hand in enough to twist the holder. However, I made a tool out of some 35mm x 35mm wood. I cut a slot diagonally (about 2-3mm wide and about 10mm deep) and then cut the block to length about 55mm long. I was then able to use the block to slip over the tab and twist it out. I also used the block to align and put the new bulb in. Still not easy but it worked a treat. I also placed an old tea towel under where I was working so if anything dropped it wouldn't drop too far. Hope this tip helps anyone struggling to do this job.

If my 14yr old son wasn't available I'd still be out there under the hood, swearing loudly. One unexpected thing is that the replacement bulb popped off the plastic bit twice. I stuck a bit of tape on it to keep it together long enough to click it in place.

I have changed the difficult Driver’s Side low-beam headlight bulb twice using this video. THIS VIDEO IS THE CORRECT WAY TO CHANGE THE BULB. Yes, Dealer Service Dept quoted $90, 1 bulb replacement. I purchased 2 OEM bulbs for $42 at the dealer. I am 6’2” 250 lbs and have fat hands. I practiced removing/replacing the Passenger Side bulb to get the feel of the pressure and direction for releasing the plastic Bulb Holder and what to expect when you rotate the Holder/Bulb assembly into the locked position on the Driver’s Side in that tight space. I used a Head Lamp and sat on an office chair with wheels bc I’m tall. But think I could almost do it blindfolded after 2nd go round.

Hey Todor, tried this on my 2015 Golf. I have a sold in Canada version, don't know how different the set up is but the fuse box is right in front of my light access. I found that if you remove 4 screws from the plastic liner of the front drivers side fender you can reach the headlight assemble pretty easily. It was either that or taking the whole front light assembly off. Luckily I had the proper screwdriver to match the VW screw heads. I had to turn the wheel a few times to access the screws. Once I saw that you can see the liner of the fender from the engine compartment it was a simple 5 minute job.

If you’re really struggling to make your hand fit, you can remove three of the screws from the wheel well with the tire cut hard to the right (or left depending on which side you’re replacing) and peel the lining back. You can get a better angle/visualization from there.

This. I was able to do the passenger side with some effort, but the driver's side was just impossible. The next morning, I had the three screws to the wheel well liner off and the bulb replaced in 10 minutes flat!! I looked right down into the area while coming up from the wheel well with my hand...pretty easy to see where you're going. And definitely WAY easier for me than trying from above.

Great video. You're gorgeous. If anyone uses an off label light like I did(I "upgraded to a super bright led version) you may find it won't go back into the light case and twist in bc the off brand on that I got takes extra effort to plug into the socket/plug in part without kind of... Widening the... There's two clips that you don't notice unless you're having trouble, but one side will go in and almost flush like it's supposed to, but the opposite side you'll have to help it go under better... Only THEN will you bee able to put it back into the headlight area and twist it into it's secure little home. I thought my hands were just numb or I was doing it wrong. It was so frustrating since you can't see from behind how is supposed to go in. Hope this helps. A little disclaimer: My off brand ones seem to be working but I really don't know if they will cause any issues I'm the system. The actual bulbs mine are supposed to have are so dull and I couldn't stand it. Now I can see a mouse's ass, if one was in the road in front of me...I couldn't see an moose's ass before that😅😊

I failed doing this early on. I could not turn the assembly counter-clockwise and I am on the Driver's Side attempting to extract the light bulb assembly. Chewed up my hands a bit and finally found the gloves I bought for COVID-19 reasons to protect my hands. I do not have big hands and I owned a MK4 Golf and struggled to replace light bulbs in that car. I hate the fact the space is so tight. I can not get a decent grip on the assembly on the driver's side to turn it as you said counter clockwise. But I am left-handed and often get the direction wrong.
So I tried both clockwise and counter clockwise and it wouldn't budge in either direction. I think when I had the car at the Dealer for other service the light bulb had just burned out and they replaced. I have owned this GTI a 2016 for 4 years now and this was the first time attempting to replace the light bulb. Thinking of going to Harbor Freight tools and try to find like a 90 degree vise grip tool to try to get leverage on the assembly that you said I need to pull out put turn counter clockwise. Now is that counter clockwise from an orientation of facing the car int he front or from facing the car from the rear? You need to make that clear to those of us that gets things exactly backwards because well we are left-handed. There is a reason I became a software engineer and not a hardware engineer if you catch my drift and fustration. I think the dealer will charge you either 1/4 hour or a 1/2 hour of labor to install this. Maybe Autozone will help you install in their parking lot?

  • @mightysyng8302

I struggled a great deal, but once I got it, it was fairly simply. So when putting it back make sure the relatively long metal piece on the mount is down. Now putting the bulb assembly in you’re not supposed it have it perfectly horizontal in terms of the black plastic tabs. In fact they should be a bit rotated in the counter clock wise direction i.e. to the right when you’re facing the front of the car. Rotate counter clockwise like 30 degrees when inserting in and then rotate clockwise to lock.

Thankyou for this. I'm dreading eventually having to do this. Everyone says how difficult it is or how it hurt their hand.

Mooferoo Of course! It’s really not that bad, it’s a tight fit but definitely do-able and worth a try before considering alternative methods haha. Hopefully the video helps you out. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions when the time comes

I have large hands like I wear XL size gloves maybe my fingers are just long and slender, but I was able to do this just fine(after some struggle and finesse) if you can get one hand in to turn it and the thumb from your other hand down to press it a bit harder that can help too.

I changed both bulbs. Left side was much tighter and took quite a maneuvering to get bulb out and back in. My car had hard plastic covers instead of those rubber ones. I just had to jam my hand as low as possible to have room to twist both the cover and the socket. The new bulbs have a four year warranty so hopefully don't have to do it anytime soon.

Interesting, I'm glad you were able to get the job done even though the left side was tighter. I didn't know about the warranty! I bought mine from Volkswagen so I'll have to check

How many UA-cam commenters does it take to screw in a lightbulb? About 10, apparently! With each attempt, and subsequent consultation of the comments, I learned more and more, until finally I found the wires that were in the way, and turned it clockwise, having sorted out a weird problem I’d had forever about “clockwise from which direction, facing it or from your hand’s perspective “, and it clicked into place!

Is it okay to replace one bulb at a time or is it best practice to do both sides so they match?

Check wheelwell for access hatch. I was about to give up as couldn't grab rubber and found access hatch. Popped it off and took less than a minute to change bulb!

I had to buy some “plug & play” led H7 bulbs because the regular LEDs wouldn’t work. Really hate that about the newer models. I have a 2016 VW Tiguan and same exact concept.
