Tony feels terrible about all the horrible things he is doing as a criminal, which causes him to have panic attacks and nightmares, he is not proud of who he is. Walt on the other hand might feel somewhat guilty in the beginning of the show, but over time he takes more and more joy in causing suffering and gaining more power for himself. Walt has only a bitch of a wife and a half r*tarded son and 30 years of regrets. His life is totally empty and he's a laughing stock and passed up a fortune and a better wife because of awkwardness. Walt being sociopathic shouldn't be so surprising. I think you can easily talk about Tony Soprano without talking about Walter White, but you definitely couldn't talk about Walter White without also talking about Tony Soprano.
Tony is so much more likable. He’s funny, with an aura of a giant murderous 9 year old boy. Walter is just awful. When all he does as lie near the end of the series, it’s so uncomfortable to watch. And he didn’t ride GoCarts with Jesse.
I’m so glad you mentioned vic mackey!!! Extremely underrated character and imo is far mare of an “anti hero” than Walter or tony. If I had to go best true anti heroes in tv I’d say it’s elliot alderson, Vic Mackey, and June Osborn
I think he just means in the sense that they aren't purely evil. That said, I agree in that I don't think nuanced characters should automatically be labelled as anti-heroes lol it really just goes to show how low the bar is now 😂
What’s interesting is we never learn why Walter resented his mother so much, she didn’t even know he had cancer until like season 3. We never even see her on screen, to Walter she was nothing. His father however that is where his fear began. His only true memory of his father was bed ridden, dying and being a burden on his family. Even though it was a cruel fate for his father and his family to go through, Walter still kept that as something he never wanted for that to happen to him. Why I bring this up is because of Tony soprano and his relationship with his parental figures. They made him who he is, but unlike Walter whose inspiration was by life, Tony’s is by how shitty his family was. They taught Tony to always be toxic, and never change and when even if family stands in your way it’s ok to take them out. Walter is the complete opposite even though it would’ve been a easy way out for him, but he knew and felt how devastating it is when your family dies because of you, and actually does repent what he did in the end. Tony unfortunately never did and thus is in his own personal hell.
In a physical fist fight tony wins but in a battle of wits Walt wins. Also I think Walter White just as a character is the better choice by leaps and bounds
James Galdolfini could convey an entire range of emotions through his eyes and without saying a word. Til this day the greatest acting performance I've seen...
Imo breaking bad is slightly better than sopranos, but there’s a few shows that are a little better than both. The two of them are certainly two of the best ever though.
I mean, we're talking about the top two actors of our time. It's like comparing the Stones to the Beatles...they're both so good that it's really a matter of preference at that point. I personally would pick Tony/Gandolfini because I don't know of any actor that conveys anger and frustration the way Tony does. I personally can relate, because I find life to drive me crazy half the time. I go into work at 6 AM and white lights are blaring in the store. I feel like finding whoever invented bright white lights and bitch slapping him asking "why the fuck do you think we need this much light to see shit? I’d argue two points for Walter on the driving category. He intentionally crashed the car in a way that would obstruct Hanks investigation but not kill either of them. The difference, I think, was motive. Skyler was trying to keep law enforcement off the scent of their illegal laundering activities (trying to protect the family). Carm stole the money from the duck food out of spite.
Tony all the way. Tony was a life long, career criminal. Rotten to the core from day one. Unlike Walt, no need for a bald head or porcupine hat and shades. Tony was intimidating soon as he walked in the room. No ‘coming to Jesus’ moment like Walter. He died like he lived. Best single character EVER.
If we're talking about a theoretical battle between the two characters, Walter White would win hands down. Walter took down the cartel, he outsmarted, and defeated every single one of his enemies. Tony on the other hand, lost the only battle he was ever involved in with New York.
Gandolfini and The Sopranos are streets ahead of Cranston and BB. The latter are good, but not remotely comparable. There is just way, way more depth to The Sopranos.
Both Tony and Walter are great characters and they’re both very similar, but it all comes down to who is the most self-centered out of the two. For me personally I think Walter is the most self-centered and the most sociopathic. At least Tony had moments where he felt guilty and ashamed of who he is and what he does. Whereas Walter found pleasure in destroying other peoples lives in order to gain money power and respect.
