I think she improved in that area over time, but idk... there were times she showed a lack of sportsmanship...even as late in her career as 1996, she mocked Kerri Strug's choreography while she was performing, in view of the cameras.
Personally I would mock non-existing choreography of American athletes every time in competition . It is horrendous for decades . Blood from eyes and blood from my ears
Interesting how much attention is given to Galieva being pulled from the all around in Barcelona, considering she was beaten here by Marinescu, who would endure the same situation in Atlanta
The only difference was (at least i am pretty sure) the rule changed after 1992 and coaches could replace without even giving a reason, i think in 1992 There had to be cause like an injury or illness to replace an athlete who qualified to AA/EF with one who didn't, hence where the BS about Galieva's "knee injury" came from. i can see why Belu replaced Marinescu with Amanar. As artistically strong as Marinescu was, Amanar was the stronger optional gymnast and her fall off beam in compulsories is why she didnt qualify to AA.
whats not fair is that her foot hits the bar and she gets a deduction. But a year later, Khorkina does the sae thing, is not deducted, beats Amy Chow for a Gold...
William T thank you!! I can't stand Tim Daggett. I loved Elfi. I think Tim should have been replaced by Nastia and TWO WOMEN should have been (and should be) commentating WOMEN'S gymnastics. It's always bugged me that men are the primary commentators.
Justin Johnson But women often are commentators for men’s sports too, what do you think about that? I don’t think this is an issue of men commentating, it’s just the fact that they’re not very talented commentators.
Nothing Tim ever said was as negative as Elfi laughing at a Russian gymnast in 2003 and saying she couldn't believe someone so untalented made the Russian team. The difference here is simply that they were nicer to foreign gymnasts back before the US women started dominating. Once that happened then all Russians, Chinese, etc became threats to American domination
I miss the NBC commentators being excited about the foreign gymnasts. Since the Americans have become dominant, the commentators have become less interested in the others.
I honestly think they probably broadcast to the casual fan as opposed to true fans of the sport. I imagine they feel those viewers want to see the USA. It's about ratings.
Svetlana was/is, as much an innovative as Olga, Nadia, and Mary Lou! Svetlana brought 'Woman' back to Women's Gymnastics and was dominant for a decade! She's why we are seeing Women in Gymnastics again! What a graceful and beautiful woman! Calling her the Belarusian Swan is SO accurate!
This seems like a cursed meet! So many things went wrong and no-shows from US gymnasts except 2. I miss the unique mounts onto the beam, they are so pretty and nice to watch.
Love Marinescu - she was clearly the most talented Romanian gymnast in that cycle. Too bad she was from Bucharest and never quite gelled with the Deva girls and coaches.
I think that is debateable. She was artistic, but her vaulting was kind of pathetic, and her tumbling while good had nowhere near the talent of the Milo/Gina/Simona trio. Her bars, like all the Romanian girls, was nothing to write home about either, and her compulsories apart from beam were sloppy. Most talented is subjective as they all had pros and cons, I would probably go with Simona though who while not that artistic or good a dancer had amazing vaulting and tumbling talent, in her early years a very good clean bars set (in later years her bars sucked but I am talking about 95-96 which was her true peak), and excellent form on every event.
@@sandylenzo5525 Very interesting. In 2000, Octavian Belu said Simona was not talented, and her results were because of hard work. I think quite a few fans disagree with that assessment, though.
@@sandylenzo5525 no matter who is “more talented,” the athletes who qualify to the all around are the ones who should compete. They rightfully earned the spot and taking it away is a gross misuse of coaching power and an unspeakable act of poor sportsmanship. The 1992 situation is a black mark on the sport and those Olympics- and will always be such. A very undeserving winner. Alexander Alexandrov should have been banned from the sport permanently.
@@casandraleff4462 Maybe he was speaking about natural talent, the ability to do something well with little work. If so, he probably meant it as praise for her dedication and work ethic since it's even harder to do well at something when it doesn't come easily to you. All top-level gymnasts work hard, but the ones who don't have much natural talent have to work harder to achieve the same degree of skill and mastery.
I know what the rule is, but I was glad they allowed for Marinescu to receive a vault score. Obviously would not make such an allowance at the Olympics or Worlds
When the narrator called Svetlana Boganskaya a gymnastics senior citizen at age 22...*sigh* It's this mindset that discourages a lot of female gymnasts from continuing their passion for the sport. Nobody ever calls male gymnasts too old. Khorkina, Boginskaya, and now Chelsea Memmel & Oksana Chusovitna are showing that you can still compete, no matter what age says.
Back then everyone landed on hard surfaces most of the time, even at practices. Now you lad in foam pits a lot. I did gymnastic 4-6 hours a day and ended up with 2 ruptured disks and 2 fractures from it at 14 years old. That is why there were always bad injuries and gymnasts didnt last as long. The floors have gotten a lot more springy over the years too.
Have to say your overinflating the issue. This sport is defined by the code of points. Its a reality that these skills are easier for a younger, smaller body. There are exceptions like Biles. Therefore, young girls become competitive early whereas it takes young men longer to develop the strength to be competitive. We see the same reality in other sports like tennis. Nothing sexist about it.
Poor Roza with the illegal pulling of her from All Around. If that hadn’t been allowed, Shannon Miller would have won gold. I always felt Shannon was robbed but so was Roza
She was robbed again in the 96 all around. She led after the first rotation, her's was balance beam. During her floor exercise she couldn't hear her music which resulted in her FX score being in the 9.6 range. The American crowds were rowdy and inconsiderate. I understand the host country is going to cheer louder when one of their own hits, it's to be expected but the Americans (which I happen to be,btw) were excessive. I could hear all the floor music in Liverpool when the British girls were having their best meet to date. Roza also missed a chance to advance to the floor final because Kerri Strug hit that vault while she was doing floor for the team. I was more bothered by her being screwed by the rowdy, inconsiderate crowd in '96 than the switch in '92 because I don't think she really had a shot at the aa in 92 but she was a contender in '96.
It's blown out of proportion. Coaches can pull and replace who they want now, and Roza would not have medalled, whereas Gutsu was a hot favorite coming in as the European champ.
While I dont think Galieva would have medaled I think she had an outside shot of a bronze. She got 39.612 with the disadvantage of being early in the Soviet lineup. Without that disdavntage she might get higher scores and Milo's bronze score (with mistakes which cost her the AA gold she was very capable of) was 39.687.
Marinescu's age is wrong in this. The coaches changed her birth year on her passport in order for her to compete internationally. She was born in March of 1982 which made her 13 in this competition, and 14 when she competed in Atlanta. They changed it to 1981 making her 14 here and 15 at the Olympics
I don't think it was held over two days, the odd order was possibly because they were also awarding winners for each event, so they were able to announce event final winners half way through the competition for two events instead of waiting to announce them all at the end (if that made sense). Grosheva appears to be the only one to change leos.. perhaps she had a wardrobe malfunction? Gymnasts often bring an extra leo incase something happens to the first, although that's pretty rare.
If anyone ever wondered if the judging was rigged by the Romanians (and the Soviets when they were there)- here is proof. An athlete performs a vault not flashed on the screen then goes too soon… and is given her scores back? No question that was because of what country it was. Glad that era is over and the rules are much more strict.
Sorry but one thing about this whole thing just caught me off guard. 4:54 you didn't invite Dominique Dawes when your entire top 10 is out? What the hell was that. Not that she didn't attend because of an injury, or declined, or sickness, but she wasn't invited!!! I don't know, that just threw me off everyone. Continue with your day.
LOL. Yea, it had to have had something to do with her withdrawing from the Worlds team. Either way, she obviously wasn't accepting an invite to this if she skipped Worlds lol.
Galieva’s interview seems scripted . I saw many interviews with Russians gymnasts . They never ever address coaches with surnames . Neither it is appropriate to address your teammates with their surnames . Extremely rude and unnatural
Svetlana was so gracious and kind. I always had a soft spot in my heart for her goodness.
Watching this in 2020.. Svetlana will always be one of my all time favorites. She was so beautiful, and still is!
Dominant for a decade in a sport where she was considered too tall, and she was a Woman among Girls! Pure Grace and Beauty!
I never saw this segment with Svetlana about her coach that committed suicide. Svetlana is a class act and it is a very sad story to hear.
Who would have imagined that 9 years after this, Mohini would have her chance at the Olympics! And help the team win Silver.
Right? Amazing story. I became a huge fan of her in 2004 and was so happy to see her win a medal at the olympics.
Ff
I absolutely appreciate the 1995 ads included in this upload! 😁😁
Jurassic Park fluff music for the win.
It's so 90's it might as well be Bedazzled.
Whenever they use Jurassic Park or Batman theme I think of Tonya Harding’s skating programs lol

Elfi was actually an alright commentator on her own. It's like Tim just infected her with his negativity. I wish it was just her

Svetlana boganskya has always been my favorite. And Lways will be
One of my all time favorite competitions!🥀
Please upload more US Gymnastics events to UA-cam. I would really appreciate it.
I loved they had tourisheva
Glad they showed Teft on beam. She had a tough meet, but that routine was quality.
All these foreign people in my home state.Thats cool.Bravo Marinescu you are awesome.
Marinsecu was SO MUCH smoother on bars than all the other Romanians, wow.
No handgrips either (I never noticed that before)

i didn't know it was Alexandrov who made the controversial decision of pulling Galieva to give Gutsu a chance.
It's blown out of proportion. Coaches can pull and replace who they want now, and Roza would not have medalled, whereas Gutsu was a hot favorite coming in as the European champ.
Just ridiculous drama by NBC, it's super normal, it happens all the time even today.

Gymnastics Cool Videos - Gutsu fall of the balance beam.. Should been Rosa Galieva be in the all round at the Olympic in 1992 not Gutsu

Wow the gymnasts collapsed in Sydney when the vault was like 2.5inches too low..was it? And Yelena doesn't have anything regulation to train on! Lol😮
Boguinskaya was already a three time Olympic gold medallist. Two gold in 1988 and one in 1992. Why NBC pretends it is two golds, is a mystery.
The fact she WON vault at the Seoul Olympics is never talked about. Even when she competed in vault finals at both the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics!
I love the female commentator. Elfie Schlegel? Hope she comes back for the olympics.
I don't understand the first vault score for marinsecu? That vault was worth much more than a 9.318 and threw her off for her second vault.
Was this competition held over two days? Makes more sense about how they did rotation order (vt/ub; bb/fx) and Grosheva wearing different leos.
I don't think it was held over two days, the odd order was possibly because they were also awarding winners for each event, so they were able to announce event final winners half way through the competition for two events instead of waiting to announce them all at the end (if that made sense). You're right about the event finalists - makes sense! Thanks
Mo changed her leo as well I was thinking the same thing was it over two days
Soooo...why wasn't Dominique Dawes invited?
My guess is that since she wasn’t at 1995 Worlds due to injury, she wasn’t in consideration for this meet?
Why are you using Jurassic park theme?
Wow I wish boguinskaya had stayed with alexandrov instead of moving to karolyi. I bet she'd have done even better in Atlanta.
Miller deserved the gold Gutsu was so sloppy
The judges... 26:24 Judge 1 "WTF" "*laughs*"
Can you please post the 1996 Olympic gala!

"At age 18 is it too late for the gymnast?" lol what??? Insert Simone here...
9.312 on bars for Mo is way too low
clearer than mos
The lighting was different for this than in the Olympics.
Dominique Dawes not invited....What?
i caught that too
Maybe she was not invited as the US already knew she had withdrawn from the World's team a couple months prior to this competition...?
LOL. Yea, it had to have had something to do with her withdrawing from the Worlds team. Either way, she obviously wasn't accepting an invite to this if she skipped Worlds lol.
32:23 what the H is going on here? lol
Grosheva is so much more musical and artistic with that improvised floor routine that any Americans with choreographed pieces . Just pathetic
