i'd say: upgrade it to its limits. Give it EVERYTHING! WiFi, SSDs, max RAM, core 2 quad, throw in a GPU, make it as fast as possible and as crazy as possible.

Old PCs with that layout could also add an older GPU, a USB 3.0 card using the PCIe x1 slots or maybe a combo with a type C if a Linux distro has drivers for it. The 32-bit PCI slot can use either more USB 2.0 ports or settling for WiFi N. Still sounds pretty usable to me.

Ohh this brings back memories, we had 30 of these in a primary school IT suit running Win 7 on spinning hard drives and 4gb ram , upgraded to win 10 on SSD , but still 4gb ram , on a internal server 20102 domain worked fine for years , but Win updates finally slowed them down and then win 11 saw then hit the IT Recycling centre, kept them running from 2012 to 2022 😊 but alas

A lot of these types of big chain store brand name pre-built PCs were force-updated to Windows 10 and then ran slow or stuff stopped working and were tossed in the bin. I have one here that was given to me by a local friend purchased in 2010 with 1st gen i5-750 that was running Win7 and then got force-updated to Win10 and the whole thing came crumbing down. First the TV card did not work in Win 10 and later the HDD would show a S.M.A.R.T error about imminent failure then soon after that the Geforce GT220 video card stopped (1st gen so no fall-back built-in graphics). After that the owner bought a mac (and hated it lol) and they gave me the pc which was a HP Pavillion p6380a. It's actually a pretty decent i5 with boost clock up to 3.2GHz, 8GB RAM and runs fine with Win 7 or Win 10 and still useful for general web browsing and youtube etc

Windows 10 can actually run decent on older hardware with certain upgrades. One major upgrade that will drastically improve performance is replacing the hard drive with an ssd. That alone would probably make your i5 750 rig run snappily on windows 10. Ideally you could put in a 256gb ssd and 16gb of ddr3 in it for around $30-40 total, or even less if you source your parts from a good place.

@@awesomecomputers7076 I'm not wasting money on this. The PC is surplus to requirements. I have maybe 50 computers here, this 1st gen i5 is just another random PC I don't use.

@@g4z-kb7ct ah that's very valid, 1st gen intel is really old at this point. So old that if you have that many systems, it's not worth the time to bother if you already have other systems. I suppose you could maybe sell it on marketplace or something but something like that might not move quick or be worth the time as-is depending on what city/market you're in.

I have an old Acer laptop which has a dual core 2GHz., CPU., 8 GB of DDR3 ram., and an ssd., and it works well with LMDE 6, perhaps those computers would also work well with such a combination.

You can get modern mATX motherboards pretty cheap like 100$ and a current lower end cpu and it would run great. I like these smaller cases to save space.

Have you noticed that the motherboard is mounted upside down?
That's because many HP mini tower computers from that era had to be opened on the right side.
Normally, mini towers are opened on the left side.
I don't really know what HP saw as an advantage in mounting the motherboard upside down.

There is nothing wrong with the heatsink on the 2nd system. It's a Dell transplant. I use the same heatsink on a couple of systems with Xeon 4c/8t cpus. Works fine for daily use. Core2 quads are very reasonably priced these days.

Linux Mint Cinnamon, low end pcie x16 single slot GPU, possibly a PCI USB 2.0 card and/or pcie x1 SATA III card if desired. Windows 10, no, not even on a Q6600 these days, memory may already be maxxed, check mobo specs online. Or you could slap an inexpensive 6th/7th gen Intel combo into that thing, everything looks standard, still do Linux Mint Cinnamon as Windows 10 support < 11 months now and as long as the chip isn't a k chip should have OK enough graphics on the chip to keep the 300W PS 😀. Your call.

as someone who has this kind of computer, Windows 10 is perfectly doable, just remove all the bloat and you're rolling. You won't get anything from linux indoctrination. it will be almost the same experience. I personally still use Windows 7 and defy all odds. Not even an antivirus, I have yet to be infected. been living like this for years.

At some point these old PCs are not worth upgrading. For usd120 you can get a brand new 14" Asus Vivobook E410KA laptop from bestbuy (admitedly this is not upgradable in any way, shape or form lol). Or get a used one with a better spec. No point spending money on parts but if you have something laying around then put it in (more ram, faster cpu, better video card etc). It should still be useful for web browsing and youtube even as-is but maybe go back to Win7.
