Funny story - my family has been a fan of the simpsons since before I was born. I watched this episode when I was really little and it scared the absolute SHIT outta me. My parents teased me about it all the time, and they often told me that I was the only weirdo in the world that was afraid of this episode. I seriously believed that until I looked at this comment section lmfao. So now I’m 16 years old, and still, to this day, I’m terrified of it. xxdudeyy Dude I used to live out in the middle of nowhere and the blinds from my window were ripped off leaving my room exposed to the outside. I was terrified of seeing that green glow, despite the other obvious and REAL dangers that could’ve been lurking in the dark. 😂
"Oh, it was awful, they set me on a cold metal table and prodded me with humiliating probes and then.. oh wait.. that was my physical" lol. Classic simpsons.
I'm 26 and this scene still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Just an absolute triumph of eerie character design, sound design and animation.
Absolutely. It's amazing how they keep the jokes flying and *still* simultaneously keep ramping up the tension, and how the alien is still so eerie even after decades of knowing the big reveal.
Makes me laugh how the alien says "Don't be afraid" yet Homer does the exact opposite by screaming and running from it making the ahhh! inprint in the grass.
Even knowing what the alien really is, the reveal at 1:29 is a masterclass in spookiness. You have the music, of course, but then you also have a cut from the light to Homer before you see the alien clearly, leaving your imagination to run wild. This is followed by the slow move between the trees (invoking our primal fear of dark forests*) while it's looking directly at the viewer (always offputting--that's why interviews have people face a little off to the side). All this from a hilarious sitcom. *I'm a ruralite; trust me, that is a very real thing
That's why the Groke was so scary for us kids in the 90's too. The first time she appears, she stares directly at the viewer, unblinking. She's got a creepy ass design. I first saw this episode as a toddler and it scared me so much because it reminded me of a Bunyip. There was a Simpsons comic book in the spare room and I read it without realising it had a retelling of this episode in it. Safe to say I screamed the house down when I turned to the page that had the "alien" on it. For the rest of my childhood I couldn't go near that room or hear the X-Files theme without panicking.
I think the reason this scene scared so many as kids was the combination of many cleverly thought out factors. First is the fact that we are in a normal world, a situation that we could probably all find ourselves in one day, which is walking alone at night somewhere. The second thing is the fact of crossing a forest at night, a primordial fear of man, where who knows what beasts or worse can be hidden behind the trees or rocks, and obviously the darkness that keeps everything hidden. The third thing is particular, because it's not a simple jumpscare, which would have been trivial in a cartoon, but a real paranormal experience which would be already scary to live in a house by day and let alone in a forest by night in loneliness, all this looks like a kind of nightmare, and finally the icing on the cake the theme of X Files which does nothing but add mystery over the whole scene by also adding the visual representation of the alien, a real alien or very similar to a its probable appearance in reality (if you believe it), its movements and the mystical aspect of any paranormal event. Obviously it's a cartoon which adds to the mundane component, but I'm sure if it was a real episode, it probably would have been a horror movie, so I conclude that the writers were terribly good at touching certain aspects of human psychology.
I have seen a lot of freaky and scary shit as a horror buff, but there have only been two things that cause instinctual fight or flight fear in me to this day: The Grudge and this.
