So you are saying to increase the number of bees you just add more bees to the colony. Mindblowing.

I think a lot of this depends on the health of the colony more than population. I had a small pile of bees picked up in August last year. It wasn’t large. I figured on seein how it could do. It was small doing into winter and came through fine.
The big issue is pesticide poisoning during the growing season. I have this issue this year. They’re struggling, but finally coming around. They are the old queens because they’re marked from last year. Frustrating

Good thing nowadays they definitely teach the new beekeepers to start off with at least two nucs. Almost every UA-camr says start off with two almost every recently written beekeeping book advices to start off what's two colonies. Thanks for everything you do David.

David thanks I will Join soon you have helped me a lot as a new bee keeper so I did 2 bee removals from homes in the last 4 weeks both boxes are doing ok but the one from 4 weeks ago is still with out a queen it was my understanding they would make a new queen if there was no queen I see no sign that they are making a new queen I will add bees from one of my other boxes there are lots of bees so I can pull frames to bring up the population....what can I do to get a new queen in this box thank again...

Pretty sure you need to add some eggs. Eggs that are very new. The bees MAY raise a queen if you add a frame with eggs about 3 days old. The bees can make a queen but they need the correct age of larvae to do that. And that larvae must be laid by a queen. Take some eggs from another hive. I'm certainly no expert. Hopefully David or someone with more experience can chime in. 🐝🌻good luck!!

If you want them to make a queen at this point, you'll probably have to give them eggs or VERY young larvae

I experienced this this year. A colony just wasn’t building up but after giving frames of brood they’re raising much more new brood

i just started this spring . I noticed one of my hives was really low in numbers and did not like white or yellow foundation ..they must have swarmed as i seen two queen cells but this was on the 5th of August 2024..slow to make it in big numbers both hives were packages and the other one is 2 brood boxes and supers full much bigger..the new brood box was filled in two weeks...well 7 frames of mostly brood...all boxes are filled with bees but not the other hive..such a big difference..my question is will they make enough brood by the time winter comes..they only utilized 7 frames in on brood box and 4 frames of honey up top..

One of my hives was weak and it looks like the bees are gone now. Can I add bees from my thriving colony to the empty one?

David , looking good on that hive. 19 days ago I placed a 10 frame super on each hive and this morning I checked on the 2 hives , found both supers full of capped honey - Surprise 😊 Everything else in good condition. YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER 👍

    Hey David, 👋
First time commenting. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Question: have you tried the peppermint candy trick for hive beetles? Basically taking peppermint candy (the ones made with real peppermint oil) and you put a few of them in each hive body. The idea being the peppermint oil drives away the pests.?! Thanks 🙏👍

Be careful of the back yard ideas for pest control. They are often not proven and spread throughout the hobby.
Stick with what works from the pros

A lot of new bee keepers only have 1 hive. Unlike most things where you start small, bee keeping can benefit from not starting small as possible.

The perks of having 30+ hives if a hive is weak I can take a donor frame from each one to really increase workers.
