Sengoku Basara Combat is Simplistic? A Look at Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi's In-Depth Combat

  • This is a video I have been wanting to do for a while. I want to showcase at least the basics on how in-depth the combat is in Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi. Capcom created the most in-depth combat in a musou-like game, better than Koei-Tecmo and Omega Force has in any of the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games.

So many characters can showcase the complexity and creativity of Sengoku Basara combat, for example, Ashikaga Yoshiteru, Nagamasa Azai and even Tsuruhime
It's really sad that Capcom fumbled the bag so badly trying to "over-localize" the first game and basically killing the franchise here in the west

Thats what im always saying. Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi sure has the best combat system in the musou genre.
And i agree when people say 2Heroes is simplistic, it really is with only Square string and 2 Triangle moves. With that in mind, it's still a game i love and put thousand of hours in it, there is something so nice of completing the square string and swapping between two moves. Sometimes simplistic is gold

The more you dance (taunt) as Keiji the longer his Basara attack will be. I did this so many times on SB3 to farm weapons on the hardest levels to unlock all the joke weapons 😂

  • @Ziruno

7:34 to add on to this, Sakon's kick stance, neutral triangle adds different "hit properties" to the enemy depending on holding triangle or tapping triangle. Tapping triangle knocks the enemy straight to the ground, and holding triangle makes the enemy bounce high enough to continue an air combo on them. You also didn't talk about everyone's unique plunging attack with triangle in the air. Sakon has a basic blade plunge, but with the kick stance, he can either hit the ground regularly, or bounce back into the air. The "kick stance bounce" plunge attack also resets all his air attacks, like his tornados(which can also be done in the air)
all these small differences adds unique flavor and style to each way each character and player, play.

Keiji’s revision skill ( L1 + Square) can be used in midair as well. His taunt during his drunken state is much shorter allowing for his Basara attack gimmick (gaining 1 more attack animation during it for each taunt) to be easily executed.

You missed one more mechanic of Keiji Maeda. His motion triangle shows that cherry blossom symbol for a reason. If you press Motion Triangle with just input timing of that symbol, you will continue his motion triangle combos as if it were its own Square combo (or rather, your just doing C1-8 without square leading to each one individually). which…combine that from every move he can cancel into motion triangle with…
Hideyoshi has an almost similar just input timing mechanic except it’s one of his main mechanics. he can cancel into square, triangle, motion triangle, R1 from certain grabs within his attacks…and If I remember correctly L1 square in certain cases as a grab chain/finisher can be used also. essentially, he can grab chain an enemy this way with the 5th grab being a super version allowing him a create your own street fighter grab super combo system.
I can’t seem to find it when I search but luckily I made a copy of the google doc. there’s there’s amazing move guide for every Sengoku Basara 4 character documenting how exactly to perform their moves or what cancels they have beyond scripted cancels (like dodge/jump/dash cancels), and even documenting improvements the characters saw from Sengoku Basara 3 or Utage. it was part of the Cuhrayzee wiki, which before Sengoku Basara Cuhrayzee wiki would bring it up but…yeah now i’m not sure. I have access if needed though.

To be mildly fair I would say the One Piece Pirate Warriors series (3 especially) comes the closest to the mechanical complexity of a Sengoku Basara game and for that reason it's the best handling set of Musou-titled games, but yes Sengoku Basara 4 definitely comes out on top as king of the genre.

    • @srowwww9780
      @srowwww9780 10 місяців тому +1

The closest to Basara gameplay is Pirate Warriors 4 thanks to jump system.
Pirate Warriors 3 isn't really the closest to basara gameplay in my opinion, just like dynasty warriors you just chain Square and Triangle but now you can start a chain with Triangle and every character has an unique R1.

What I like about SB is Every character has each uniqueness in their moveset
I think the most complicated combo character in Sengoku Basara 4 is Naotora and Hideyoshi.
The skill that I don't really like is the Timing dependant skill 😅 (I'm talking about you, Nagamasa 😂)
A YT Channel by the name of Tomo Hayabusa made the every character moveset of SB in case anything missed you can check their video.

Exactly, every character in Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi is unique and complex. None of the Omega Force Warriors games have even the slightest of depth compare to Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi.
I am also aware of Tomo Hayabusa. He did a really good job showcasing the movesets of all the characters in Sengoku Basara: Sanada Yukimura-den.

Indeed. Sengoku Basara is the most complex musou to date. Even the older DWs are pretty brain dead. That’s why people like Tomo have 10-15 min videos on their movesets. There’s a lot of hidden gimmicks, creative combos, and interesting exploits to explore. Heck even stage secrets too. I returned to Basara when my brother let me bro his PS 4 and I was playing that more than my Xbox.

It's such a shame only Sengoku Basara 3 Samurai Heroes released outside of japan with the same name except the 3

As a fan of the Sengoku Era and Sengoku BASARA, I enjoyed this video a lot, and although I've watched maaaaany SB4S gameplays videos (sadly I don't have a PS3 or PS4 to play it, even if I bought SB3U, SB4S and Yukimura-Den in Japan, although in less than 3 months I plan to finally buy a used PS3), and this is the first time I know about how Keiji's triangle move actually works. I have played SB2 and SB2H though.
Yes, Sengoku Musou/Samurai Warriors games are more historically accurate than BASARA, but I feel most of the characters are quite bland, not just on their moveset but also personalities. I saw SW anime, and one problem I have with it, was that almost all characters were too gray, to the point you didn't care who would win at Sekigahara or Osaka, and many of those characters were even interchangeable between them.
This doesn't happen with Sengoku BASARA's characters. Each character is unique in moveset and personality, and each moveset reflect said personality. Even each relationship/rivalry is unique. Yukimura-Masamune, Kenshin-Shingen, Sasuke-Kasuga, Sasuke-Kojuurou, Sakon-Katsuie, Motochika-Motonari, Mitsunari-Ieyasu, maan, even Matsu-Hideaki rivalry are different one another!
SB will have always one or more characters especially for you. I played just once Sumeragi, and I enjoyed Yukimura and Muneshige even without their complete moveset yet.
By the way, definitely suscribed n_n I haven't enjoyed a Sengoku BASARA related video in a while so much as today!

it was indeed in Basara 3 and 4 where the gameplay was fun. imagine if the content were so many as the 2 heroes with the gameplay mechanics as 3 and 4. and i also love the fact that every musou fan thinks musou combo is complex because you can input more combo. me as an enjoyer i'm gonna input the powerful combination in musou anyway and do that again and again to get my victory and what they call it? ex moves i think. where you can also do input 2 powerful combo on later basara games. basara 3 and 4 make it expanded similar to musou. while musou keep the traditional basara added almost every combo on the fly on 3 and even went crazy with 4 as R2 skill can no longer lock behind preparation skill to choose and the added L1 + square makes it more ridiculous. it wasn't the same as before if musou have square, square and then triangle to input combo, basara 3 and 4 have square square and r2 or triangle as a combination specially the new chaining combo with sumeragi make the statement of a guy somewhat false but that just my opinion and observation as myself is a basara simp aswell.

There's something that I think you forgot to add, but Keiji's cancel can cancel into itself. Like all his specials, just input the cancel command during the cancel and he's shift into another cancel attack, and with the right input timing, he can actually combo this infinitely.
That this video doesn't even cover all the hidden mechanics that aren't really talked about. The game not only has jump cancels, but it also has dash cancels, specials that cancel into themselves, using character switching to cancel moves, canceling directly into supers, and a whole lot more. Dynasty Warrior's combat system doesn't even compare to Sengoku Basara, especially Sumeragi, which I personally hold as the definitive version of the games.

Capcom really put their bet when they expanded the combat mechanic in Sengoku BASARA 3/Samurai Heroes. Some like Maeda Keiji rhytmn button skill (directional + △ ) and Kasuga clone counter reworked into skill revision so they still can combo into it. IMHO they did the better decision
That's why anyone who start from BASARA 3/Samurai Heroes feels "funky" when they try or saw BASARA/2/2 Heroes, because it only limit 2 of 6-7 (cmiiw) △ skills to choose.

When I played DW games at my friend's house, I always felt the combat was bland.
And for some reason, the bland combat is used in other games like Fate Extella Link, One Piece Pirate Warriors games and some others I don't remember.
    It's a shame man.

Nope! It’s actually really straightforward. It has a 3 season anime and a film all translated into English (sub & dub)- and Sengoku Basara 3 is dubbed. It also has a parody anime called Basara Gakuen, along with lots of manga.
The characters kind of have their set vibe so not a lot changes that you can’t figure out through context and what you already know from previous media. The gameplay rocks!
I bought all of the games for about $80 forever ago. They’re pretty easy to get a hold of. The English version of SB3 might be a bit more challenging to find though.
SB4 adds SO much it’s absolutely worth it. I personally just use Google Translate on my phone to read the accessory affects and menus here n there through the camera.
There’s loads of translations out there to find online. Raindrops&Daydreams is a great place to start.

The moment they called SB4S's gameplay simplistic, they immediately exposed themselves that they hadn't touched the game or played it like a Warriors game.
Maybe they also saw some videos of SB4S and immediately activated their fanboy hat and downplayed its gameplay.
Even right now in 2025, any(and I mean any) games from Dynasty, Samurai, Orochi/All-Stars, and their other games like DQ, Hyrule, FE, etc. couldn't hold a candle to what BS'4Ss gameplay has to offer(and this a 2014 and 2015 game).
