Sengoku Basara Retrospective: Birth of a Japanese Pop Culture Phenomenon

- Sengoku Basara is a series that has existed for almost two decades. The first Sengoku Basara game came out in 2005, and it was one of Capcom's attempt to boost the domestic game sales in Japan. The series was heavily inspired by Koei's Dynasty and Samurai Warriors, with Capcom's very own take.
In this video, we will be discussing how Sengoku Basara started. We will take a deeper look in the history of Sengoku Basara, as well as how Capcom distinguish it from Koei's musou games.

3:23 A MAJOR correction: In 2003, ¥45 billion is the equivalent of $167 million, not $4.9 trillion. I messed up the math, so bad!
I really hope Capcom doesn't abandon this series. As much as I love the Koei Musou games, Basara is almost on another level when it comes to the gameplay.
This game used to be so popular here in The Philippines! Nowadays people only fondly remember the game and some are even starting to forget it, mistaking it for Dynasty Warriors😢
I would really love to see a Devil Kings Remake game where Nobunaga becomes the main villain once again and include all Sengoku Basara characters in it.
Also, make all the characters have their own “Devil Triggers” similar to Dynasty Warriors Multi Raid 2 game.
Emperor Wakamoto’s portrayal of Oda Nobunaga makes the latter turn into an unhinged demon with an unholy desire to rule the world and of course, who could forget Kazuya Nakai’s bombastic portrayal of Date Masamune?
Are ya ready, guys? Get your guns on!
I used to play devil kings all the time. I just got myself a copy of the ps3 collection. I had no idea there was more games. Thanks for the review.
Superb editing and script! Sengoku BASARA is definitely a series worth looking into for action and musou games fans. I wish the series had more popularity in the west for it to stay afloat for an extended period time but alas Devil Kings did a lot of damage I suppose and that game needs it own video 😞. Thanks, Profar!
Great video man. Can't wait for the others in the series!
Thanks Chris. I plan to do more Basara videos in this channel, just for the fact that not a lot of people do it.
More of this please!!!!❤
Yes, I plan to do more Sengoku Basara videos.
I love Sengoku Basara as a whole so much! Happened upon Samurai Heroes one day and have been obsessed with the series since!
I absolutely believe that Sumeragi should be held as the standard for the 1 vs 1,000 genre, one of the few games i went out of my way to import.
I really wish that more people in the west knew about the series, and hope that Capcom will localize a future, especially due their recent successes.
More than a Retrospective, I almost believe this was a documentary 😊 Really good video profar, Sengoku Basara was a game that I find super fun, in terms of Beat em' up games, I loved since then and still to this day I couldn't find an opportunity to play SB4S but I really appreciate that you are making this video to somehow reach to that audience that haven't try Sengoku basara and a really good Musou game outside of DW.
👏👏❤
always a great day waking up to a new Propfar vid
I just love the Rock Lee and Might Guy type of relationship between Yukimura and his OYAKATASAMAAA!!! Which is why i kept replaying the Dojo missions in the sequel. They're very entertaining😂😂😂
Your retrospective videos is really good 😭🙏
Man that one was my childhood. I play a shit tons of it back then that I can still remember all special attacks of my favorite characters. But unfortunately though, Basara wasn't that much of a hit here in Myanmar. There was a Gaming Cafe in our town and me and my brother are the only weird dudes who play Basara. We didn't even notice the name "Basara" for like two years into playing because people here called it "တရုတ်စစ်သူကြီး (TA Yote Sit Thuu Gyii)" which mean Chinese Warriors. I burst out laughing when I learned it is a Japanese game. At least, it was more popular than Dynasty Warriors.
Really great video Profar!
i've been waiting for this!!!!!!!!❤❤❤
I'm so glad i found this channel i hope at some point we get another sengoku basara game
Would be SO COOL if every country got a game to summarise a bit of their history like Sengoku Basara did
I did watch a good bit of the anime when I was younger. Found out its originally a game series a bit later, they look very fun. And of course the characters and designs rule.
Very great video and insight, i can see how you worked hard for this one. Congrats on the new work
It would be cool if you could explain the design of the rest of the roster but its fine. Nice One profar
Thanks for sharing!! I don't know any Japanese but this is my favorite video game series period!! 😁😁
Much love from United States!
Loved it
i love musou games but most people dont as it seems. so seeing channels like your that do musou content regularly is a rare find for me 😊❤
thanks for uploading 👍
Thanks for the compliment. I have been wanting to cover more Sengoku Basara games for this channel, more so than Koei games. Just because not a lot of people cover Basara.
@@Profar26 that awesome 👍 and yeah, it's true people almost never cover them
I was so into the series in the first 2k decade... I started with the second one when the anime came out... The hype was huge for me at that time... I really appreciate this series from the bottom of my heart for all the coolness it brought to the pop culture. I mean, Masamune's lines are so iconic... But not only him ! All the cast had something so compelling, you ended up loving them all ! Anyway, great video, dude !
It really sucks that this series didn't do well overseas.
Unfortunately, yeah. Part of the reasons for that, was Capcom's localization with Devil Kings.
Hot damn, It's really difficult to find anyone talking about this game, outside of Japanese-speaking channels, it's as if the series didn't exist ouside of it's home country (which is totally untrue), so massive kudos to you for being a conneseur.
Well, my initiation to the franchise was, unfotunately, through the aforementioned Devil KIngs, and I loved the game (me and my older brother), despite all of it's flaws. Later in my life, I took a deep dive into the series and it absolutely blew my mind. The setting, the lore, the characters, the voice cast, the fact that the series itself is a VERY creative take, on the actual history of Japan, this franchise is a one big mess (in a positive sense, of course).
While Devil Kings is essentially considered a game that exist outside the series, I still advocate that it should be covered.
Mainly that the localization wasn't done by an outside party like many people but internally by kobayashi himself thinking he will apeal more to westerners if they divorced what their series standout and instead force it to be artificially part of DMC series (deceptively), while gameplay wise is equally controversial including increasing the difficulty which defeats the original philosiphy of the jp ver. being essy to pick up and play, the desiners still tried to improve many elements and make the combat stand out bit more
DK would also be the perfect explanation on why the series always had alienated relationship when it comes to localizations in future
good luck on retrospective
The Sengoku Basara is a hidden-treasure the only problem I have, is the games are only in japanese and that's kinda annoying
great video👍
Really nice retrospective, tickled my nostalgia bone. Were you part of a Basara / Koei / Musou forum as well back in its heyday or at least when SB3 got confirmed?
Thanks for the compliment. No, I wasn't part of the Musou forum back in 2008-2010. However, I did visit koeiwarriors.co.uk often, for news back then.
The more I think about it, the more I'm confused as to why Capcom didn't slap a rep into the VS. Series.
Denger suara abangnya di menit-menit pertama, ragu.
Masuk profil, keraguan hilang.
Permisi nonton dulu bang, nanti edit komen setelah selesai nonton ✌
EDIT:
Mantap, sedari dulu emang suka game Samurai Warriors. Terus tahu ada Basara, tertarik lah, mana lagunya banyak digarap sama TM Revolution, makin suka. Paliing pol ngicipin Basara 3 karena ada localizationnya. Kalo 4 di localize kayanya bakal nyicip juga deh. Nice video! 🔥
I love that there's no in game lore why Tadakatsu is a freaking Gundam .
there's no scene's or dialogue of were he came from and who made him .
You missed Chaos Legion that was another Capcom loss, I always love the Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura rivalry it is so great for the story of the series. I wish Capcom would release an HD collection on PC would buy it. I always find that funny how people say Sengoku Basara ripped off Samurai Warriors when reality it was inspired by it.
Love this series. Glad to see more people talking about it.
BTW the PS2 did not sell anywhere close to 350m units, let alone as of March 2k3 which would be less than 3 years on the market. As of 2024 it's sold around 160m ww. That's direct from Sony Boss Jim Ryan. Switch has a chance to finally surpass it.
I never said PS2 sold 350 million units btw. I said in the video as of 2003, PS2 sold 24 million units.
@@Profar26 I'm sorry I was reading the captions. It straight up says 350 Million lol.
At another point you converted Yen to dollars when talking about Capcoms losses and sounds like you said they lost trillions of dollars instead of the millions it would have been. The caption again says trillions but it sounds like that what you said too. Just trying to help. 🙂
Capcom, i know you got other things to care about but PLS JUST GIVE BACK OUR BABY!!
My first experience with this is Devil Kings and it was a piece of sh!t of a game and switch to Samurai Warriors. I stumbled upon the Sengoku Basara op on you tube and thought why Japan has the cool shit when we get the sh!t that is Devil Kings.
