800T should've never been allowed to be trademarked in the first place. For one, it is descriptive. And they didn't even come up with it. Someone unfortunately will have to challenge that and that costs money.
It is not that simple. "800T" alone should not be possible to trademark, at least not here in Europe, but "CineStill 800T" would be completely fine. And we have to be careful to distinguish between TM and (R) (the former is easier to get, as far as I know). Yes, this is a case for specialized lawyers.
@@c.augustin They are not going after people using "Cinestill 800T". Just 800T. It is scummy to even apply for that trademark. Knowing that they weren't first to use it and that it is descriptive. It is extra level of evil to then go after small competition who are less likely to have the money to defend themselves.
So…is it Reflx lab they don’t like using 800T?
@@segzeeman7356 apparently it's anyone who has used 800t t800 or 800tungstan. which is hilarious as that is literally just description of the film.
@@segzeeman7356 They've sued catlabs. And I think others have received cease & desist letters. Reflx might've been one of them, not sure.
I cannot understate how much CineStill can go screw themselves for this. The only reason they have the trademark is because Kodak didn’t trademark it before. Kodak had an 800T in the Vision line. But they never trademarked it because they knew it was descriptive. But the big thing that pisses me off is that they act like a company for the people, with a subpar product and unnecessarily high prices. They don’t make film. They get uncut rolls from Kodak without the rem yet and let Ilford or Foma cut them. That’s their contribution. And their films aren’t even the speed they say. There is no 800T! It’s a 500 ASA film, the supposed push only applies compared to the 500T in ECN2. In C41 it just reaches normal density.
Corporate lawyers ..... the hyenas of modern times. I would say scum but that would be maligning scum.
Agreed, this is disappointing to hear. Normally words like 50D or 500T would be considered descriptive as they refer to the characteristics of the product and do not indicate origin. However I suppose if a competitor was using that descriptive language alongside a deceptively similar name, like "Cinestyle 800T", using similar colors and packaging, that might invite a trademark claim.
I mostly agree with you but there’s some inaccurate statements here. I shoot vision3 500T alongside 800T and there is an obvious difference in sensitivity caused by the removal of the remjet. Maybe it’s 700 or 650 but definitely not 500ISO. Second, I’ve shot reto project, ffp, reflex and cinestill and although I think the trademark issue is disgusting and I’ve had a couple of quality issues, their product is generally much higher quality in terms of its consistency compared to others who roll vision3. Cinestill are wankers obviously, and it seems incurable but if you say BS then the rest of your argument is undermined
@@wv_ Actually you don’t know what you’re talking about. The lack of rem jet doesn’t nothing to the film speed, even CineStill have said that. What does something to the speed is the cross processing in different developers. ECN2 has a lower gamma because it’s designed to be printed onto motion picture print film, which has a higher contrast compared to darkroom paper. So yes, comparing 500T developed in ECN2 to C41 will give you about a 2/3 stop push. But since it’s used for still photography, going through still photography scanners and onto still photography paper and not print film, there is no push. Because C41 films inherently have a higher gamma, since they’re meant to be printed onto flatter darkroom paper. So if you want your image to reach full density compared to other C41 films like Portra you’d need to expose it at the speed the original ECN2 film has. Exposing at CineStill’s box speed is gonna give you a 2/3 underexposure.
And honestly man, this “rem jet removal increases speed” is the most self generated internet brain frat you can come up with. Don’t tell people their argument is undermined and bull shit because of this. It’s just some crap someone with no understanding of the mechanics of film came up with and people have been blindly repeating it ever since. That’s not how halation works and that’s not film works. But I mean, most people also think only CineStill has halation.
As others have pointed out, "800T" should not have been allowed to be trademarked as it is descriptive. Imagine if Campbells trademarked "tomato soup"
Worse yet, if Kroger trademarked "tomato soup" after buying their store brand stuff from Campbells.
Nico is info central for the film world in my opinion. There's more film based news here than anywhere else I have seen. Every time I see a notification of a new video from Nico, I drop everything to see what goodies he has for us.
Thank you for sharing my DIY instant film video. Hope more people can try it and improve the workflow
Thrilled with the news of Adox having a prepared package of my favourite film Developer D76.
Go Adox! 😊
A prepared package of powder fixer, would also be nice.
Adox has been making powder fixer for years
@markuslarjomaa3122 thanks, I'll see if I can purchase it in Australia.
@@petervanorsouw They seem not to have a dealer in Australia (though they do have dealers outside Europe, at least US, Japan, Taiwan...), so I guess your best bet is to order from Fotoimpex in Germany. That might not be cost effective... so just keep pushing your local photochemistry shop to become an Adox dealer :)
800T is literally just a discription of the film. It should NOT be available to trademark.
That's like Trademarking Ortho or 400 Pan.
Or Toyota Trademarking 4 cylinder and suing Honda for describing their engine.
It's a ridiculously bad look for Cinestill and especially for a company that is a film re-packager themselves.
I absolutely love the DIY info for the instant film. There are so many talented creators out there which I'm sure will have a field day with this stuff!
Thank you Nico! Love your videos and appreciate what you do for the film community. Hope you and your family thrive!
I hope that means I can get my hands on some medium format CMS 20 soon. Love that stock.
Adox news are great, and glad they will make 120 soon after so long. Unlike others (CS) they have a fantastic transparency and many very relevant projects.
Glad too that there is, even too much promising advancements in alternative C41. Inoviscoat (orwo?) have hit the 5? year mark of iterating color (Metropolis-NC-Retro 92) and a good film is quite welcome; a bit of Agfa legacy comeback. That with the side surprise of Ferrania. Interesting!
Reflx labs are respooling Aerocolor in 220. I wish, just for trips, that Kodak would finish an occasional batch of Portra 400 in this format! Wonder if their 220 spooler is mothballed.
Photopia was a treat, even though I'm too old for this kind of "fun". I got some really good tips, and speaking to you (and other people) was great! I might go next year (living something around 1.5 h by train away from Hamburg makes this something to consider. Khromeland was best of all, hope it will be even (a bit) bigger next year.
Que locura lo de la foto analógica instantánea casera, estoy flipando, gracias por las noticias señor!! :)
These are really good news. I’m also so excited for the Pentax film camera and what other things this might lead to in the future! Also NC200 and a change to maybe get chs100 ii in 120 in the near future. Yes!!
👍Cheers as always Nico for the news.
Pretty cool video the one that made the peel apart film , also glad that the fpp still coming with some new film
That's some great news of Adox making the 120 film machine running. I am looking forward to place my first order. All other news regarding colour film is great too. Hopefully they can all stay in production and improving.
Photobia next year is from 10th till 14th October. I already put in in my agenda. Hopefully khromeland is part of it too (that will be my foremost interest) and there is as good news as this edition.
The FPP Infrared in 4x5 is already sold out. I would have happily bought two or three 25 sheet packages at that price 😢
New films by Ferrania - my only question is soon "Ferrania-soon" or "real world-soon"?
Now they also sue Kodak for using Vision 800T 5289 as label on their stock?
DIY peel-apart sounds wild!
Love all this color film news ... not going to touch the Cinestill thing on a UA-cam comments section. ha ha.
Does the new Orwo C41 film have an orange mask? That is probably the single most important point when discussing C41, yet you never mention it.
Which new Orwo? I have covered Orwo film multiple times in the past.
@@NicosPhotographyShow The Orwo C41 film you discussed in this episode.
Hey RICHO, where's my 102mp Pentax 645?
Cinestill have been acting dodgy for a while now , this has come to no suprise to me, I hope they release their wrongs.
the new Aura film scanner sounds intriguing to me, not a fan of camera scanning and the the others are really dated
🦐
Instead of getting more film manufacturer sharing a limited market it would be way better to consolidate and support those who offer all formats. Imagine Ilford shuts down because of Orwo and Cinestill stealing too many customers. No more large format and ULF anymore....I think another small format film is bad news rather than good....
L take
Consolidate... Yeah, remember when oil companies did this?
That Paterson tank motor attachment is ridiculous. Does not solve any problem. Anyone who can’t agitate their tank themselves shouldn’t even be doing film at all.
I think the USP is the temperature corrected timer really. Maybe pretty useful for colour.
stop buying cinestill
Cinestill sucks big time. Dug their own grave. You should stop having them as your sponsor!
What a horrible company Cinestill is, glad they never took a penny of my money. Grasping, hype-obsessed grifters
Same here, I've used cine film without the remjet from repoolers such as vibe with good results. Cinestill is way too expensive and now they've turned fully predatory.
Screw cinestill.
