    I don't like any of their other products, but I have to say I'm quite hyped about the Lomomatic 110.
    Looking at the sample images on the Kosmofoto article, the lens seems to have incredible performance for a Lomo camera - no vignette, no softness or strange stuff going on at the corners and no chromatic aberration, so I guess it's a triplet lens at the very least.
    And it seems to be starting at $90 without the flash which would be a great price for an auto exposure film camera with actually good image quality.

    The Lomomatic 110 is the most exciting camera in a long time. It may well be one of the best 110 cameras ever. Electronics solves a lot of 110 camera limitations. I hope it is a hit for them 110 format allows cameras small enough to be genuinely pocketable and with you all the time. I love the creative texturing that the grain gives in that smaller size. I also love the convenience of the cartridges.
    Yes, 110 format is the same size as Micro Four Thirds. Panasonic was making 110 film cameras (under the National brand) long before it was making MFT digital.

    Kodak chemistry coming back is great news! However I have been a kodak guy since I started with film photography back in 2012 when kodak, ilford, fuji and foma on one or two websites was all you could get and prices were affordable at least online and film photography wasn't really a thing yet... And I have supported Kodak buying all their films in single rolls 35 and 120 both colour and bw, all their chemicals for film and paper development... then in 2020 film photography was suddenly a thing and kodak couldn't keep up with the demand and film was crazy expensive in EU so I bought three 30m long rolls of film from USA (+ import taxes) and that was still more convenient than buying kodak film here. And then 1 or 2 years ago the kodak chemicals disappeared... So now I say FU Kodak, since I use HP5 and FP4 in large format in moersch finol for N and N- developments, I can do that for any other format. I'll miss my dear Xtol but if I need to push one stop to get more contrast in dull days I'll use whatever is available consistently and reliably.

    Not a financial expert in the slightest, but from what I understand, Kodak has a pension plan that is used to pay out a set amount over time to its retirees. The plan was managed internally so well that it accidentally created a substantial excess in its value than what is needed to pay the retirees for the remainder of the time. Kodak fired the team that managed it internally so they could switch to an outside partner to manage the fund from here on out and to explore a way to essentially use that money to pay down debt. When they went bankrupt, one of the agreements was that if they ever got access to the pension fund money, it would be required to use it towards their debt. No matter what, it's a good thing for Kodak, especially if they can in fact use it to pay down debt because servicing their debt is one of their largest expenses. (I own three shares of Kodak, mainly as a joke, but figured I should mention it lol)

    Kodak pension fund
    - they have appointed one of the pension funds main investment advisors to be their “outsourced CIO”
    - they have accepted an independent advisor statement that their pension fund’s assets exclude the future liabilities of the pension fund by 1.2bn and this is available to be brought back in to the company
    - if they choose to bring it back in, it will incur some tax liability
    - if they bring it back in, the proceeds after tax will have to be applied against the Term Loans that are outstanding - ie. to reduce financial liabilities, not to be partied with, or put into R&D, or paid to shareholders as dividends

      The irony is that unless the cameras currently being offered sell well, larger manufacturers likely won't be encouraged to build the sort cameras that hardcore film photography fans might wish to buy. It's a bit of a Catch-22. You could always buy one of the current cameras as a gift for someone else that doesn't own a film camera, helping to grow the film community in the process while lending encouragement to the Ricohs (i.e. Pentax) of the world.

    Overfunded pension funds are dangerous in the US: corporate raiders will try to take control of the company, loot the money and then sell the rest for scrap. You need to drag that money back into the company and do something useful with it.
    In contrast I refer you to why Kodak Alaris was formed. 😢

    -110 film frames are -*-much-*- smaller than m43 sensors.- Indeed, m43 and 110 are nearly the same size! Should've looked it up. Still, image quality was really bad, and it is the film that's the problem here. Well, unless it is an ISO 25 or lower film stock …

    • @bluur101
      @bluur101 6 місяців тому +2

      There is no pressure-plate system, so the film has some curl to it. The even-smaller Minox format is held tight when the exposure is made -- I didn't say flat because it is actually a lens/film system designed to use a curved film-plane -- anyway, the results seem to be more consistent across the frame on Minox than 110 most of the time.

    • @andrewmadsen
      @andrewmadsen 6 місяців тому +3

      No, they’re extremely close to the same size. M43 sensors have an imaging area of 17.3mm x 13.0mm. One frame of 110 film has an area of 17mm x 13mm.
      I won’t argue with you that m43 sensors, like all modern digital sensors, produce higher image quality than the equivalent sized film.

      Professor mode on:
      From a wiki: "The Company was named Franke und Heidecke by the founders. The first camera was not actually part of Reinhold Heidecke's vision. It was a stereo camera called Heidoscop, named after one of the founders. In 1923, they introduced their first roll film camera, the Roll-Film Heidoscop. The name "Rollei" eventually came from a shortened combination of the two terms."
