Next up on Mezcal Tasting for Mezcal Buzz, I got my hands on Casamigos Mezcal. This celebrity brand comes from actors George Clooney, Michael Meldman, and Rande Gerber.
I seriously feel that the celebrity mezcales tend to be more on the industrial mezcal category, and overpriced for the actual product being brought to the consumer. In the case of Casamigos mezcal, it's not far from that. It seems like the logical move for the Casamigos Tequila brand, owned by Diageo - one of the largest producers of spirits and beers, to branch off into the "mezcal" category, just as mezcal is seeing a huge economic boom.
Casamigos averages a 1-star rating over at mezcalreviews.com - and the consumer there does not seem to be feeling this brand. I myself, do think it is overrated, definitely overpriced, and to call it a "mezcal artesanal" is a stretch. However, I do give it a decent 3 stars, and don't quite knock it as a 1 star.
I recommend you try this mezcal for yourself and make your own opinion, and objectively compare it to other mezcales, not by brand, but by agave.

I just bought this as my first mezcal, I love it and the smokey smell! The bottle is a cool look too.

I bought this bottle last week and I spit it out it tasted like iodine. Probably the most disgusting liquor I’ve ever had.

A nice deep dive into whether Casamigos Mezcal is worthy of that low rating. I think that 1-star rating is justified, but that's the beauty about mezcal - everyone is right because it's they're own damn taste buds they're using, haha. Great content, BTW!

Don't have too much experience with mezcal, but enjoy mezcaliitas from time to time and this is my spirit of choice. Sweet but not too sweet, lets you feel the smoke without overwhelming and blocking other notes. Give it a try for sure!

I am by no means an expert. I have been drinking Casamigos Blanco for a couple years now, and it is hands down my favorite liquor, and I personally think it is THE best tequila. When I tried the Mezcal though, I was disappointed. Too earthy with the after taste, the flavor on the front end wasn’t bad, but the aftertaste just left almost a dirt flavor in my mouth that I just did not enjoy. I will never get it again, but you will definitely find me stocking up on Casamigos’ Tequila.

Thanks for the honest review! I had high hopes when I bought a bottle a few months ago, like you did. When I purchase something, I always hope to find I made a good purchase. I'm a Clooney fan, so that also influenced me purchasing that interesting black bottle. Bur I found myself unhappily agreeing with the online 1 star reviewers. I poured the bottle down the sink, with my regrets to George ...

This is my first time trying mescaline. I'm a huge tequila fan but I will say I'm not enjoying this flavor. It's very smoky and has a rubber tire taste. No I don't lick or ingest tires but if you ever smelt a brand new tire a kind of resemblancexamples a sense of After taste
I agree, it's not the best flavor coming from the Casamigos Mezcal. I want to encourage you to try some other mezcales... again Casamigos is a bad first impression.
By the way, "Mescaline" is not mezcal. Mescaline is a natural psychedelic from a cactus - might need to do a review on that now lol

Casa Migos tequila is terrible, IMO. The Mezcal isn't bad at all, I think people are harsh on it because it *is* a celeb brand.
I have to disagree about their tequila, but I definitely agree that most the detractors are mostly just wannabe purists & contrarians.

Purchased this last night (at LCBO, $110 CAD)... It was so gross, I would never purchase this again. The aftertaste was like drinking from a cigar ashtray. I agree that it doesn't have a strong smell and it also doesn't have any after burn, but the smoky/woody/dirt taste is overwhelming!!!! It reminded me of wine, aged in a whisky oak barrel (it's an absolutely unnecessary mix).
I would neither purchase another bottle nor recommend it, in fact I would probably tell everyone to stay away from it unless they are a heavy cigar smoker and have zero taste budds left. Fail 🤢
Thanks for the comment! I think you describes it well as cigar ash. Ash is a common flavor found in some mezcals and can be (in this case) overwhelming and turn many away. I wouldn't recommend this either... it made it's way into many cocktails

I'm glad to see a mezcal review channel on youtube finally. I've been wanting to get into mezcal, but some bottles are pretty expensive and there are surprisingly few reviews on youtube.

@@MezcalBuzz I was looking at Banhez or El Silencio because they're easy to find in my area. However, any review would be good. I'm always looking for great spirits.
@@stockicide Personally I'd go with Banhez they have a wonderful selection of mezcal of a variety of Agave, made from different Mezcaleros as part of a collective of different families. That already says a lot. El Silencio looks so gimmicky... their marketing and art they do looks way overproduced compared to their Espadín Mezcal (Industrial) - I expect to taste it one day either way, but I have pretty low expectations already...
$70 for a watered down Espadin? Oh no you’re paying for the celeb and the bottle design. Just get a 400 conejos it’s basically the same thing but $20. Oh yeah and 400 conejos comes with a gold medal from the San Francisco spirits competition. 😂

We had no clue it was a celeb brand, my husband just likes tequila so we have tried the brand and liked everything...until I got this one. I'm getting roasted 😂 So I decided to look up a review.
Everyone at the party says it tastes like a chemical or artificial...I think it has a smokey "afterbirth" as Michael Scott would say. Either way it's not a hit and I wish I'd looked this up before trying. Ah well, live and learn but this was a costly and kinda embarrassing mistake for me.

Pff, I just bought this for a coworker and her Mexican husband. Not sure their palate level hope they like it. Foolishly I didn't review it first and just went on the liquor store guys recommendation. Anyway fingers crossed it was not cheap.

I think it’s a great mixing mezcal but not fantastic for sipping. However I feel that way with almost all joven mezcals. It’s just a bit over priced IMO

Hey! I am living in Australia and we dont get a lot of options here, the only ones available are casamigos, buenbicho, koch, burrito. From this list which do you think is the best one, I am thinking to bring the bottle to a party and all of them are mezcal virgins I want to surprise them with a good destillate

I would have suggested Koch and Burrito! You have some great mezcal there, from Oaxaca, and Durango - two regions, two different species. Yum
Just opened my bottle I paid $50 for mine, some people I wanted to share it with said they rather have the silver? This is one of the better tequilas I have had, very smooth I would love to try this in a margarita. Nice review

Coming from the Scotch world I love big smokey flavours. I throughly enjoyed this after a neat drink at a bar I bought a bottle. I typically steer clear of celebrity spirits simply because of the price for the name(Crystal Head Vodka) prime example. This Mezcal is no one star drink. Maybe it’s hated for the endorsement or the smokey taste? I’m glad I tried it before reading any chatter nonetheless.
