Those guys all grew up on Deep Purple, as did everyone in our generation. They absolutely nailed it. Also agree with your observations on Michael Anthony...very under appreciated in Van Halen.
Nice that someone recognizes Michael for his Van Halen contributions. Highly underrated when in the band. When they kicked him out Van Halen success left too.
I like Michael too,. But I don't think they are hurting without him in 07 they made 93million on tour, that was their biggest tour in their career, and that was without Michael Anthony
If it hasn't been said already-on the Van Halen 3 tour (Gary Cherone) Mike did the lead vocals on 'Somebody Get Me A Doctor'. There's a video of it on the tube somewhere.
Sammy has become one of my favorite artists, really all of the guys in the Circle have, too. When you hear them on interviews or see them on AXS TV, you get that not only are they hard working artists, but they are genuinely nice people. The type of people who you like to support.
Thank You Fil for showcasing CHICKENFOOT, my favorite Super Group along with The Traveling Wilbury's, of all time. These guys are the best of the best of the best, great talents, great friends and you can see they're having so much fun. Just love all CHICKENFOOT bandmates. You won't find better talent anywhere. Come on! There we have it! 🎸🎵✌
Talent overload, best cover band for Deep Purple (who is one of the best rock band of the 70's.) Satrianni(sp) covers both keyboards and lead, great version, great review thanks
Great analysis, Fil. IMO, Michael Anthony's talent cannot be overstated. He has never taken the spotlight in any band, yet he has all the goods to do that. He adds so much to every band he plays in. Also, he is a genuine a nice guy. Perhaps one of the greatest "side man" in RnR. EVH made a big mistake by leaving him behind.
I was thrilled when this band came out and was lucky enough to see them live at the Beacon Theater in NYC after the release of their third album. They were amazing in concert. And for the record Michael Anthony is perhaps the best damn back up vocalist ever! Thanks for posting a fantastic review of the supergroup!!
This was excellent. They can draw you in/bring the audience into it without just blowing you away just for the sake of it. Satriani is super articulate and super fast but he never loses me.... As you said the expression and melodic content is so palpable that it’s all absorbable. It’s not intimidating in the way a lot of shredding is. There’s that respect for the enjoyment of the audience.
This is one of my favourites, and goes a long ways to redeem Michael Anthony for "Running with the Devil". The way EVH treated him was very shabby. Chad Smith is amazing as well.
I remember the first time I saw this video and also felt that this is one of the greatest line ups ever. Joe is a big Blackmore fan and he absolutely crushes this song. Fil, I can feel the goose bumps in your voice. I don't use this word too much, but here it goes, Awesome
Killer pick, great analysis. There must be 300years worth of experience on that stage. By the way hope you had a real nice Birthday... Yer The Man🤘 ROCK🤘
Michael Anthony was the main harmony of the background vocals of Van Halen' s songs. Chickenfoot did nothing short of justice to this Deep Purple classic. Great piece Fil.
The intro blew mind when I first saw this...I watched it over and over. Sure looks like they are having fun. Awesome song to cover. The keyboard solo is smok'n.
This was supposed to be a fun tour. Sammy and Michael was a little miffed that David Lee Roth wanted to tour without them, and they were in Sammy's bar in Mexico and decided to put a band together. They decided they needed a good guitarist, so why not Joe? They had a lot of fun, it showed and the audience appreciated it. We were in Montreux and there were barricades in front of the stage from the previous 2 bands, (Dave Matthews and Steely Dan). So we were about 10 people back, but a good 20 meters from the stage. After one song, Sammy called security over. He said to take out the barriers, then he had everybody come up close. There is someone that filmed the concert on his smart phone, and I was just behind him so you have an idea how close we were.
Wow! Great pick me up on a dreary gray day. Don't think I have heard this group before. I learn so much from your videos! I don't play an instrument, but I love your analysis and enthusiasm!
Joe really did nail Jon Lord's solo, very impressive! I've heard that solo is extremely difficult to play on guitar. All the guys sound great. Just like Purple, they're high way ☆'s
Good job on it guys, but not even close to the Made in Japan version. Sorry Joe is no Ritchie Blackmore, just not badass enough. Chad Smith no Ian Paice, and Sammy no Ian Gillian. Michael Anthony, yeah even with Roger Glover.
This is a great cover. Satch playing the Jon Lord solo then the Blackmore solo is just phenomenal! Also Sammy and Satch harmonizing ala DP Gillan & Blackmore is just fantastic!!!
Mr Fil. Your analysis choices get better & better. Always wait with abated breath every night to see what you analize. Keep up the superb work. Loved this video. RAWK!!!
Love Chickenfoot.... the "Red Rocker" can still bring it ! So can't the rest of the guys... what a group 😎 I think they are all having a good time.... so super egos here... just pure soild hard core Rock-n-Roll 😎 Rock on guys... thank you Fil great video & another spot on breakdown ! " ROCK"
WHOA! MONSTER TALENT UP THERE! That drummer (Chad Smith) and the key board playing was wayyyyyy over the top! What can i say, that song had me bouncing in my chair, how can anyone not? And Joe Satriani is Da Bomb! He is currently touring with The Experience Hendrix, they were all here in Chicago, @ The Chicago Theater on March 22nd, i was supposed to go, the person i was going with, well... was a Cheap Ass @ the last minute, so that was the end of that, and him, lol! Fil, you were so excited about this talented group, i loved how enthused you were about this video, Spot On, as usual! RAWK! \M/
Now that's a howdy howdy. Chemistry you said it and it applies. Hats off to Michael he's a badass. Would have asked you to check this one out myself if I had seen it. Great job Fil as always. I forgot the organ damn, that's how good that sounded.
That was AMAZING! I have too many thoughts to relegate them to the comment section of UA-cam so...I’ll pick one. I absolutely LOVE seeing all these top notch musicians “crushing it” but also so obviously having a blast doing it! Sure would like to have a pint with you and talk over stuff like this...or tea...I’m rather fond of that as well, but sadly, I live on the wrong side of the “pond” for that. Thanks for all you do, and looking forward to the next one!
Hey Fil! Sammy was in his mid-60s when he did this! He's 71 now - never too old to rock. Check out his more current band The Circle also with Michael Anthony and Jason Bonham on drums!
FIL, LOVE YOUR COMMENTS AS ALWAYS, YOU ARE THE MAN, THE CALIBER OF ALL THESE MUSICIANS IS OUTSTANDING, HOW MANY BANDS HAVE THEY HAD OR BEEN IN THIER LIFETIME, SUCH A CONGLOMORATION OF GREATNESS, SUCH A SMOOTHIE OF MUSIC. I WAS FORTUNATE TO SEE THEM ONCE, WHAT A NIGHT, ROCK ON, COUSIN FIGEL
Crazy song played and song by the best! Satch rocks and what a joy playing with friends. No showing off, just trying to get the Deep Purple sound. Well; succeeded!
Great one to review Fil! I love how Satriani plays both the organ and guitar parts of the song. Sammy, even at 71, is much better than most anybody else. Simply amazing musicians!
Thank you for the review - those men continue to be superb. It’s nearly impossible to believe Sammy is in his 70’s. The talent on this stage can not be measured.
WoW; I fulltime enjoyed that! What a great musicals having fun with each other. Awesome vocalists and indeed; Satch melts your face; what a great player and personality! No ego, just great music! Topband!
Great analysis of a great performance. Joe does a great job, taking on an iconic song. He was trained well on it during his time in Deep Purple as he was the replacement for Blackmore when he left the last time and before Steve Morse took on that duty.
When I first heard this performance I was blown away. It instantly became my favourite version of what has always been a song that I love the energy of. As you point out, everything about it is just brilliant. Without an organ Joe's contribution is simply amazing. The vocal harmony from Michael is just a treat and Sammy providing the harmony of the originally double tracked lead guitar gives us something missing from most live renditions. Chad is one of my favourite drummers (Ian Paice tops my all time list). He really drives this along with more energy than the song has ever had. I love this performance and really good to have your review.
Of course he did. Don't forget he replaced Ritchie in Deep Purple in '93-'94 and he learned to play the solos like Ritchie did. He didn't accept that gig to showcase his talent because he knew the audience was expecting to hear Ritchie's solos. : )
@@Module79L I don't doubt his skill, if that's what you thought I meant. Players often put their own interpretations on the lead, this one was pretty much spot-on
@Richard - Yeah, Ritchie left DP for good in the middle of their '93 tour and they had to find someone A.S.A.P., so they "borrowed" Joe to finish that tour and he ended up staying for the '94 European tour as well.
Thank you Fil! I've been watching a number of covers of "Highway Star" the last few days, so I was glad to see this in my feed today! One thing I noticed in the other covers was how easy it is to let the tempo meander, however slightly, on this track. When that happens on "Highway Star" that robs the performance of almost all its energy; even if the variance is slight and even if the playing is otherwise good. These guys , as one would expect, get it. The tempo was laser-sharp throughout. And the playing and vocals, of course, off the chart.
Great video !!!! Four amazing musicians having fun playing a classic Deep Purple track. The love of music comes thru on this video. Thanks for the analysis.
This is timely.Sammy's all in now with The Circle and I remember a 1077TheBone interview with JS and Sammy (?) discussing the forming of this band. back in the good ol' days.
@Chewy Ltd Thank you for the thoghtful reply. Sammy's still at it and after all thats gone on, thats what matters. Saw Montrose at Winterland with him and saw him there and The Cow Palace as a solo act. Ruled! Also bought a good receiver (Quadraflex 35 watt/pioneeer) and Sammy's 9 on a 10 'Scale the same day. Almost blew one of my bookshelf speakers out!
Okay, this is on my playlist now! I love Joe Santrani, and he sounds even better in the pocket with all this other talent! I also love your tone of voice and extra speed sharing your enthusiasm and expertise! What total fun!

Another great pick! What a performance! Talk about a "supergroup"! With all that talent, and THEN Joe Satriani himself! There's a point when Joe is playing the lead and just throws his head back in a moment of the pure joy of playing. It just doesn't get better than this!
Eddie Van Halen on Michael Anthony: "I had to show him how to play". "He's not a singer. He just has a range from hell". "I have more soul as a singer than he does". "And you know, people always talk about Mike's voice on Van Halen songs, but that's a blend of Mike's voice and my voice. It's not just him". When bitterness and jealousy finally cause you to reach the point of pure delusion.
I wonder why Eddie had to attack Anthony? Why so much hate. I heard Michael Anthony sing many times and he is great in the background. He never claimed to be a frontman.
@@rickjason215 He didn't have to claim anything, because he actually was a lead vocalist in a couple of bands, before he joined VH. One of those bands was a power trio called Snake. The band featured two lead vocalists. They played a few originals and covered songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Foghat

Joe Satriani was in Deep Purple.
