This was the last chapter of Houseki no Kuni in 2023 as the series went on a break from Chapter 105 (Oct 2023) to Chapter 106 (Feb 2024) and was considered by few (not as many as before since the note at the end of 105 stated that it would return in the Spring) and can be considered a conclusion similar to Ch 95, 99, and 102. Please keep this is mind while watching.
learning that the sun has never appeared up until 105 just now gives me such a surreal feeling. It makes their world feel all the more claustrophobic. When we go outside and look up at the sky- it's practically always there, you have to go out of your way to avoid it. Knowing how much our gaze was shifted to keep us from seeing it is a suffocating feeling. Amazing theme to point out, thank you.
The sun did appear but it was always parts of it never the whole thing so it getting the full focus at the end of 104/the last page of 105 was just stellar. Yeah great point about the world in general. We never actually look directly at the sun to begin with because it will damage our eyes so we look at it and the light tangentially or indirectly which is the way it is presented to us as well. Ichikawa is simply amazing as usual!
@@inspirashamul mhm! caught onto the portion part, but the avoidance of the whole just really made me as the viewer feel en-caged? hard to put into words! And wow yeah, I guess we never do really look at it directly we just know that it's there in our peripheral vision lurking about. I really wish that we knew more about Ichikawa's planning process because holy hell every little last thing feels designed and constructed out to a T. The only times I've ever felt like I've watched something so tightly created are when it comes to really well crafted movies- whereas it's a whole series that Ichikawa practically alone holds herself account to. Honestly don't know what to expect next out of what else we realized she had planned from the onset.
@@hajojo I would love to one day meet Ichikawa and really pick her brain about her structure and planning because especially with how the series ended she is insane if it is exactly what what she intended it to be.
Now I can point out the sun to my friends and say "see, the sun is a houseki no kuni reference" everyday and also I like how Phos straight up says that he wants to commit a little bit of arson in the end
The lack of sun in the manga until now is such an interesting find! I love how the stark paneling plays into the duality of sun/moon. God this manga is so well made. I could think about it endlessly
It's almost the end of the line. It was a wild ride. Just caught up in a day after leaving off on before the 10k years. I'm in a state of melancholy peace. What a fuckin read. Goddamn.
I actually think I'd like an ending like that. An ending in which Phos stops existing as Phosphophyllite, as the one that started this off. An ending in which the Phos that underwent everything that happened is put to rest. An ending in which Phos has fulfilled their purpose in the world and finally, really finally doesn't need to strive for anything, be it the safety of the world, of other lifeforms, of their happiness and even Phos's own happiness - Phos's objective all along. An ending in which Phos is, in a way, rewarded for fulfilling that grand purpose they had in the world. Still, not by happiness, but by peace. Phos is tired. Anyone would be, after all that. And at that point, even happiness would feel like a burden. I think I would like an ending in which Phosphophyllite who was, changed and is, ceases to be.
I definitely have a thing for figures that have fulfilled their purpose, just,, going away. I appreciate it a lot every time I see it in stories. I think I realised that while reading "his dark materials". But anyway, apart from that, I think it would be a very nice finish in this particular case. It sort of finishes the cycle, for one. It represents choice and the unstoppable natural flow of things at the same time. Not to mention that every chapter since ((and including)) the 10 000 years of suffering, I've been saying to myself "huh. Ichikawa could just drop it right now, and that could still count as an ending". Since all those chapters have complete yet open endings, it would be nice for the end of the whole series to go against that and seal it once and for all. Wouldn't feel like it's being dragged out for the sake of being dragged out, if that makes sense
100% agree. Someone who has gone through so much change cannot go back to they were at the beginning and still be intact. Really poignant point about how happiness might even be a burden for Phos wow beautiful and valid statement. And yeah every chapter since 95 could have been the end. I just wonder what she has left to tell us.
Hey there! I've just caught up with the manga yesterday and I've been watching your videos. I would like to say I love all of your character and episode analysis, it actually gave me another perspective to the story. If I may request, could you make a video on Enma? I know people said there's no real bad guy, but if someone ask I would always say that Enma was the true Antagonist of the story. At least in my interpretation, his whole masterplan is to push Phos into becoming a human by making him experienced the most human emotion: "Vengeance". And to do that he has to make Phos suffer to the point of no return. I mean, you could say the gems were also responsible for Phos suffering, but after finishing the manga, it seems like Enma was the one who orchestrated Phos's decent into madness. Again this is all just my opinion, I may need to reread it again someday, but I would love to hear your opinion about him.
Welcome to the fandom! Glad you have been enjoying the videos! In terms of Enma, in the “Phos: No Longer Human” one of the sections is focused on his plan and how he manipulated Phos. But yes I definitely have a separate more updated video planned but it probably won’t come out until 2025. Will reply to this whenever that does publish!
I could relate to Phos very strongly too. The bubbly, arrogant behavior but low self esteem. My friend watched houseki no kuni and remarked Phos behavior are so similar to me. But i honestly love God Phos. Happy Phos is nostalgic and cute, but she matured and what remained of her is her kindness even after the pain she experienced.

If I remember correctly the admirabilis recognize phos because of the smell of their legs. So at least they can smell stuff.
Oh yeahhhh Ch 51 I just double checked it thank you for the reminder!

This series really has me looking out for anything that could be a Buddhist symbol.

EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER THAT HAS BEEN OUT FOR THE LAST YEAT MADE ME CRY. This story is too good for me.
For real! Only just a few more heartbreaking chapters left too
My prediction if Phos wll get envelop by the Sun alongside earth...and then the sun become part of phos. Phos will be the sun.

but why tho
please we don’t need another phos phase 😭😭 /lh

Phos wanted to burn the bridge, let them. If it means their pain to end.
And maybe the Admirabilis can smell? They're the being of flesh anyway.
Yeah hopefully this will finally get their suffering to reach a conclusion.
Wait so, if phos doesn't exist anymore, everyone goes back to existing (except phos)?
@@NacsSketcher I don't think the prayer is reversible in that sort of way as it isn't tied to Phos as a being but an action that Phos did as a divine.
