  • We bring you a beautiful motet by William Byrd, written by the composer in 1580 in honour of the monarch at that time, Queen Elizabeth I. The text was adapted for later monarchs including James I, James II, Charles I, Charles II, and William of Orange. In this case we have adjusted it for King Charles III as a tribute to him following last week's wonderful Coronation.
    We made this recording at a rehearsal a few days in the beautiful chapel of Nazareth House, Cardiff. You'll notice a few unusual chords where notes clash between voice parts known as 'false relations'; they can sound like errors, but be reassured that they are definitely in Byrd's original manuscript!
    The closing 'Amen' is a particularly beautiful piece of writing, as you will hear.....

    O Lord, make thy servant, thy servant Charles our King, to rejoice in thy strength:
    give him his heart's desire, and deny not the request of his lips;
    but prevent him with thine everlasting blessing,
    and give him a long life, even for ever and ever. Amen. ✝
    God Save His Majesty, King Charles III, By the Grace of God King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & N. Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand & of His other Realms, Territories and Crown Dependencies, Defender of the Faith and Head of the British Commonwealth. ❤👑❤
