Te Deum - ‘We praise thee O God’ (‘Collegium Regale’) - Herbert Howells
Переглядів 2217 місяців тому
One of the finest settings of this canticle for the (now rarely heard) service of Matins, Howells wrote this glorious Te Deum in 1944 as a response to a bet for one guinea that he couldn’t compose a canticle for the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge! Howells certainly succeeded in winning the bet and went on to compose a whole series of stunningly brilliant and groundbreaking canticles for Ki...

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Byrd’s death, hence our focus on him at the present time. We hope you enjoy hearing the recording! We recorded this on 18th October in the superb a...

This lovely piece is a ‘part song’, i.e. a song written for several vocal parts; the highest (soprano) part takes the melody whilst the other voices (altos,...

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Blaenwern) - Rowlands
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
The great and very popular hymn 'Love divine, all loves excelling' is most often sung these days to the fine Welsh tune 'Blaenwern’. The hymn - with this tune - was one of the musical items at the wedding of Caritasian Sarah Winter to Richard on this weekend exactly a year ago in St Davids Cathedral, Pembrokeshire. The choir for the wedding was made up of Caritas members. In this recording we s...

We bring to you three verses of the hymn ‘All my hope on God is founded’ recorded very recently in St German’s Church, Cardiff. The superb tune was composed by Herbert Howells who named it ‘Michael’ after his son who tragically died aged nine having contracted polio during a family holiday. The descant used here in verse 3 was composed by our Director, Lindsay Gray, for the funeral of Valerie D...

We bring to you a beautiful motet by the 19th century Austrian composer Anton Bruckner entitled Christus factus est, recorded very recently by Caritas in the fabulous setting and acoustic of St German’s Church, Cardiff. Listen out especially for the dramatic contrasts in terms of dynamics, pitch, tone and mood, gradually building towards a sensational climax with the sopranos hitting top As, an...
Be Still Before the Lord (Dinbych) - Joseph Parry

This week Caritas brings to you a verse of a fine, anthem-like hymn tune ‘Dinbych’ by the local Welsh composer Joseph Parry (1841 - 1903). We’ve set the tune to a text beginning ‘Be still before the Lord’. ’Dinbych’ is the Welsh name for the historic North Wales town of Denbigh and means ‘small fortress’ Note the typical strong minor-key flavour of the harmony which is so popular in Welsh hymns...

Caritas Founder & Director Lindsay Gray writes: I’ve always loved the song ‘Cry me a river’ which was written by Arthur Hamilton and was first published in 1953 (a great year….). The song was written for Ella Fitzgerald, but was first released in 1955 by a former classmate of the composer, a singer named Julie London who rapidly rose to fame through the song. In this arrangement I’ve sought to ...

Listening to this at dusk. Beautiful.
Astounding
St Germans in Splott! Organ and acoustic are marvellous.
Absolutely sublime performance and acoustic! I want to sing this piece someday!!!!!!
Beautiful. And the acoustics are absolutely perfect.
I'm surprised no one on the Internet noticed that *this is the piece where the famous choir sound effect came from.* This piece is wonderful.
An amazing hymn and the harmonies are beautiful, and i just loved the descant.
Absolutely delightful sound (but I had to forgive with difficulty the over casual dress code)
Glad you enjoyed it, Maurice! That was our first return to action after the three lockdowns - 2021 - so we had to grab the opportunity at short notice and assemble a group without preparing all the concert gear...
The 3rd last line (1m 50s) 'Till in heaven we take our place' is a gobsmackingly beautiful descant.
Superb!
Thank you for your ministry of music 🎶
Beautiful! Love Blaenwern!!
Wow! Wonderful! Thank you!
Beautiful. Indonesia.🙏🙏🙏
Heavenly! Bravo. 😊
love how the Amen develops.
Gorgeous voices and sound. ❤

Vivian Crawford - Jamaica: Thank you for worship to the glory of God and not to our human " feel good."
Oh sacred head, sore wounded! 🤷🏻♂️🙄
Hope more recordings come out during the advent season
The church is St German's (Church in Wales) at Roath in Cardiff.
I adore this hymn and your version really helps draw out the beautiful harmonies. I used to worship occassionally at St Martin's Roath - its acoustics are stunning! Thank you.
Thanks Will! It’s a fabulous hymn, isn’t it; this was our first session back in 2021 after lockdowns so it has extra poignancy for us in Caritas. Totally agree re the acoustics in St Martin’s; we still occasionally rehearse and record there.
Fantastic! I will to hear you sing "When I survey the wondrous cross" Rockingham
Thank you, Kenneth! We have in fact sung that hymn to Rockingham in a concert this year, with a new descant for the occasion. I’ll ensure that we record it here in the next few months….
Very uplifting
Thank you! It’s a gorgeous piece, isn’t it!

Many thanks, Lance. I hope that all is going well for you.....
Heavenly….no better word! Thank you for your divine focus. I hope these songs speak to you, the performers, as they do to me.
Trop lent.
One of my very favorite songs, well sung. Thank you!
One of the best!
Glad that you enjoyed it. We really relished recording it; such a fabulous piece!
Right tempo, right blend of voices and well phrased: a top-class performance. This conductor and singers are really at one with this beautiful music.
Many thanks Tony; so glad that you enjoyed our performance of this.
Who composed the descant for this lovely arrangement?
Thank you. It is by Lindsay Gray, the Director of Caritas, composed especially for the wedding of one of our Caritas singers in 2022.
@@lindsaygray2246 Would it be possible if I could get your arrangement for this hymn? I think it would beautifully enrich the liturgy at the Masses I play at if I used it. Thank you 👍
@@gerardtran84 - yes; sorry to have missed your question. If you could place your email address here, I’ll send you a copy of the arrangement. Best wishes… Lindsay
