It’s good, but there are a few elements that don’t quite add up. Essentially, the explanation we’re given doesn’t really make sense given the audience is shown the supposed antagonist taking actions that appear to work against their goals when no other characters are around to witness it. The ending choice was a little weird too: “wait until morning and a good thing will happen, or go now and a bad thing will happen.” Okay… but the thing is happening now. Whether He goes or stays can’t possibly have an effect on the event, because it’s already over when he’s presented with the choice. That only potentially makes sense if you’re invoking the weirdness of quantum mechanics (specifically, the idea that causality isn’t necessarily temporally bound), but those ideas don’t feature in the movie at all.

@@JebeckyGranjola I haven't seen "Irreversible," so I can't make a comparison. I think it may be considerably worse for mothers, but to say more about that would risk posting a spoiler. so I was one of the people who didn't watch horror movies but when I saw the VVitch at the library I was so intrigued by Black Philip on the cover I checked it out. This channel got me into horror. I've always been shy of it, especially since I can ramp myself up anxiously before experiencing some sorta horror and it makes it way unfun. plus i have problems when the media tries to imply that "oh the bad supernatural thing exists in the real world and can come after you, yes you, the person watching right now!" But now I've watched a number of things youve recommended (I fucking love both suspirias so much. that scene in the remake with the main character doing the dance for the first time and the other girl in the mirror room lives in my head rent free (also i would like to find a better phrase to communicate that idea that doesnt imply im a landlord but idk)). I may end up watching some of these that i havent yet... probably not hereditary, at least not while my mental health is the way it is. i have yet to watch get out which i know i need to fix some day. when i first watched this video i looked up synopses for many of these, and i def did that for the visitor but i completely forget what that synopsis said so im sure if i go watch that ill have fun
Glad Mandy was made for you, 'cause it certainly wasn't made for me lol. I agree with pretty much everything else though. Happy new year and thanks for the great channel!
I'm not a huge horror fan to be honest, but I went and watched The VVitch right after this and you're right it was very good. I'll probably watch more of your picks in the future.
Some great picks and some movies I should probably rewatch at some point. Did you watch Gerald's Game? I'm a big fan of Mike Flanagan's work this decade.
Hereditary and Midsommar definitely hit me in different spots than most of the other movies on this list in terms of evoking legitimate discomfort or fear. Saw someone recommending Parasite, I definitely second that.
The short film "Mama" was based on is still one of the most terrifying things I have seen in my entire life, so that was why I passed on the Feature Adaptation. I like being scared and grossed out (The Thing (1982) and Alien (1979) are perhaps my top 2 favourite films), but I don't like being THAT SCARED! :D
That part where you put down your popcorn and forgot about it in Hereditary, it made me scream out loud; something which I hadn't done over a movie since like 1993.
I loved " the guest", the acting of the main protagonist was so believable, and this movie gainst lots from it, it's also a pretty decent action movie aswell
All of your picks would be on my list too, and in about that order (save for one of your alt movies that you placed on the alt list to avoid dupes for directors). May next year continue the power creep in the genre ;)
Why no list in the description box? I suppose it would ruin the "suspense" of the count down. But I want a list to come back to so I know what to watch.
Matt, did you see The Love Witch? Perhaps my favorite feminist movie of the decade (yeah, I saw The VVitch too), it uses the aesthetics of exploitation movies to create one of the most transgressive explorations of the male fear of female sexual freedom. Plus it just looks amazing.
Yo dude I just watched Mandy twice back to back and it was made for me too. Thank you so much. You and Will Menaker got me there, love my lefty media critics! Edit: also I don't think I fucked up the pronoun but sorry if I did! Can't remember but your she-ra video meant a lot to me! I wasn't clean when I saw it though so it's a bit hazy. My b if I fucked up.
The first time I watched Get Out when the guy goes to fist bump and is returned a handshake I thought "that is like an old person". I was so proud of myself at the end of the movie.
Figured the Witch would be pretty high on the list. I watched that one in an almost empty theater and when I left an old lady turned to me and said "that was the worst movie I've ever watched". For some reason that didn't feel very surprising. For a movie ostensibly just about a family in the woods centuries ago it feels incredibly political.
Funny, I had the same experience with the lighthouse, nearly empty theater, old woman says it was the worst movie she's ever seen. Both of those movies aren't for me, but funny we had a similar experience
I saw it in the movie house in Belfast on a tuesday night, which is when it was cheap in and it had a small number of randos who'd wondererd in off the street drunk, presumably expecting a "more conventional" (i.e. Shite) horror film. As soon as it finished someone shuoted from the back "what d'fuck was that?".
@@kohhna that sounds like a bad experience for such a cerebral movie, but I gotta say I do adore rowdy moviegoers. Best theater experience I ever had was paranormal activity 2 with an uppity crowd. Capstone was at the end when someone yelled at their friend "On my fucking god, were you not paying attention the ENTIRE MOVIE?"
Hereditary and the Witch are two of my favorites. Mama looked good, but I never saw it. I have to watch the movies on this list. Get Out was really good too.
I saw Ghost Stories as a play recently, and am discovering via this video that there is a movie. I dunno which came first, but I can say that the experience as a play was grouse. Loved it.
Train to Busan was brilliant, I like that the horror comes from how people act in different situations, and not the zombies, even though the way the Zombies move is pretty good. I felt depressed, but like in a good way after watching Train to Busan.
I know Mama isn’t the scariest movie but omg I saw it when I was like 12 and it tapped into my deepest fears of being abandoned and being unable to effectively communicate with my family all the while people were sick and distressed. God damn that movie scared me. I remember so little of it other than the children who were abandoned, the way the uncle gets hospitalized and can’t look after his girls, and just the super spooky ghost stuff
All solid choices. My disappointment with It Follows was more cos of the hype, not the film itself. My list would have to include Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, which has a similar emotional and genre shift at one point in the film as The Wailing does. I Saw the Devil was also a perfect pick, as was Under the Skin. We Need to Talk About Kevin hits in the gut right at the same place Hereditary does and I never want to watch it again. The most wild experience I had of the decade however was A Field in England. There is at least one scene that crawled completely under my skin and still resides there, and the utter pyschedelicness of the finale is amazing.
Idk why but I really like As Above So Below, probably bc its one of the few scary movies that I can actually sit through without having nightmares lol.
What about Insidious!? Thought slime will you please explain to me why you didn’t like insidious. It seems consistent with your taste and it was soooooooooo good!!
One interesting thing to note about this list: all but one of the top 10 and most of the honorable mentions are from 2015 onward. One could chalk this up to recently bias on Matt's part, but I think it's also indicative of the huge horror movie renaissance we're living through at the moment.
I was almost worried that you weren't gonna put The VVitch on the list. The movie _singlehandedly_ pulled me back into the Horror genre. It's also kvlt as fvck.
You know, I just cannot get into the arthouse style of horror making, a la Robert Eggers or Ari Aster. I mean, I guess I understand why people like it so much, but it just never really resonated with me. For reference, here's my own top 10 of the decade: 1. Get Out 2. The Conjuring 3. Train to Busan 4. Cabin in the Woods 5. Tucker and Dale vs Evil 6. What We Do In The Shadows 7. It Follows 8. Us 9. Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos) 10. Overlord Honorable mentions: Annihilation Extra Ordinary
I thought Goodnight, Mama! Was a pretty darn decent reworking of Thomas Tryon's The Other. for me, the only twists that really work are those which hinge on one character's reasonable perspective and worldview leading to an empathy or antipathy that is both turned on its head yet still resonates in its original form so that the viewer no longer sees things as they were but still understands the consistent actions resulting from someone wanting to do the right thing but not knowing how.
It's pronounced "The Five-Five Itch."
This comment is not getting the likes it deserves.

Would’ve replaced It Follows with A Quiet Place, but sure. Great list, friend!
Hereditary and the Witch are two of my favorites. Mama looked good, but I never saw it. I have to watch the movies on this list. Get Out was really good too.
Grate list, my list is largely the same with the inclusion of Gerald's Game directed by Mike Flanagan.
"The Lighthouse would have made the list but, uh, well, you'll see." goddamn fuckin killed me.
this list is definitely in my top 10 ten , lists
I saw Ghost Stories as a play recently, and am discovering via this video that there is a movie. I dunno which came first, but I can say that the experience as a play was grouse.
Loved it.
Great list!! I wanna see the whaler now. I do love a slow burn
You: Someone else who has seen and enjoyed Ghost Stories.

Train to Busan was brilliant, I like that the horror comes from how people act in different situations, and not the zombies, even though the way the Zombies move is pretty good. I felt depressed, but like in a good way after watching Train to Busan.
I knew Mandy needed to make this list.
A great list, for me though I'd have to have Lights out on my list. Or one of the Conjuring's
Cheddar Goblin was my steam display name for like a solid half a year after watching Mandy
Thank you for telling me all about these movies that i am too scared to watch! They sound awesome!
Keeeep up the good work!
What about Insidious!? Thought slime will you please explain to me why you didn’t like insidious. It seems consistent with your taste and it was soooooooooo good!!
Wachted it, liked it, set it on watch later.
Let's see how many of the movie i wach till i'm back^^
One interesting thing to note about this list: all but one of the top 10 and most of the honorable mentions are from 2015 onward.
For reference, here's my own top 10 of the decade:
1. Get Out
2. The Conjuring
3. Train to Busan
4. Cabin in the Woods
5. Tucker and Dale vs Evil
6. What We Do In The Shadows
7. It Follows
8. Us
9. Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos)
10. Overlord
Honorable mentions:
Annihilation
Extra Ordinary
Wow, I literally haven't heard anyone else talk about The Guest. I couldn't get anyone I know to watch it with me, loved that movie when it came out.
Are you me? Great list.
You son of a Babadook. I've roamed the lands for almost 3 decades
& rarely have i been intrigued by a horror movie, until you showed up!
Scaredy Matt, have you watched Climax? I think you might could really love it based on other entries on your to ten list x
Here in 2021 deciding my spooky Halloween movie ty Mildred
