Those were great times. I wish I could bring my kids back in time for a 70s Concert. One of the best shows I saw was Max Webster / Starcastle / Rush. On the same bill. Great show. All three bands played great. PW
I feel sorry for you if you didn't see Max Webster in the 70's and 80's. I saw them at least 10-15 times either in bars or opening for Rush. GREAT 🇨🇦 party band👍
Grew up with Max, my intellectual rock band; took people to see them on roadtrips; Minden, Cobourg, Kingston, Bala, we always had a blast. Singing our faces off to songs of teenage revolution. PGD
They were far too talented and cerebral to be so obscure. Never a household name outside of Canada and far northern US. They were fairly popular in UK and Europe. They just had bad luck and bad management.
@michaeljaeger01 I always thought there was a touch of Zappa in Max Webster. Kim Mitchell is truly one of the great, Guitarist/Singer/songwriters and so under rated, as is Gary McCracken who is way underrated as a drummer and made Max Webster's complex songs sound so fluid. This band should have got way more credit
What a great band. The first time I saw them, they were opening for RUSH and STARCASTLE at Vetrans Memorial in Columbus, Ohio. Im like, "Who is this dude bunny hopping around the stage". Anyway, I've been a MAX fan ever since then. Killer drummer too IMHO.
Some really good simulcasts around that time,City Tv must have some gems in their vault . The artists should petition to release these concerts.man ,brings back good fkn times
It was back in 74 when I immigrate to Canada and 1975 when I had the opportunity to 'feel' the power of Max Webster at the T.O City Hall bands stage... Kim Mitchel still remains at the top of my Canadian bands list among Nazareth, Triumph, Sass Jordan and Lee Aaron
This was from something that CHUM-FM and CITY-TV used to do in 1980. It was simulcast on tv and radio. I got an audio bootleg but the sound isnt that great. This was a show at the Roxy in Barrie Ontario where I lived back then. A friend of mine was at the show and took a million pictures. He gave me a couple and I know at least one is still around somwhere... wish I could find it!
A friend who is a rabid Rush fanatic introduced me to MW, this the first time I have ever laid eyes on anything they did. Eclectic compostion structure...a hint of rocco period classical and a smear of Zappa. Really good. Gutiar\vocalist makes me think of a young Brian Eno...
I was at this show in May 1980 and still have my ticket stub! I saw the band several times between '77 and '80. Always a great show. One of my favourite Max Webster shows was when they opened for Brand X and Genesis at the old CNE Stadium in Toronto. I also saw FM and Saga at the Roxy, among others of the era. Interestingly Saga played the now nightclub/theater just this past February. Unfortunately I couldn't be there this time.
DarylH56 I was there. Have my ticket stub as well. The Coronet Motor Inn on Victoria Street Kitchener was a great place to see them. Unfortunately, burned down, in the eighties I think. Went to Florida in 78 and played Max for all the American beach inhabitants. They thought Rush was good, I said I have something better.
Oh my God, this takes me back. Wow, I didn't think I'd find any Max here either...what a treat. Saw them many times also (good ol' days). I'd love to see "Oh War" here. Been thinking of that one lately. Thanks, this is great.
I remember seeing a band when I was seventeen in 1978 in Richmond Hill (north of Toronto) at the BlackHawk motel inn. The bar was dingy, with maybe twenty people there at the most and some bikers got into a fight and smashed a beer glass over someone else's head. The band however really impressed me. I still remember them well. Their name was Saga Paul
Worked sound for a band called Greystone Lion when they played the old Blackhawk Inn. Audience member threw a beer mug that broke on the rail behind me because his girlfriend was making eyes at a band member. Our manager called her friends (Vagabond MC), they showed up in colours before our next set. No trouble for the rest of the week. Go figure.
The first time I've experienced the Max Machine was way back in 1978 when they opened up for Genesis at the old CNE stadium. I've managed to scam my way to the front of the stage and got my first contact high. The second time was when they played my high school the following year. My ears were still ringing from that show. Back in the day, Max was Rawk. It's good to know that Kim's still kicking it. And I didn't know that he's a lefty until my sister asked him for an autograph.
I saw Max Webter open for Rush 3 times...(shoulda been the other way around!) Kim Mitchell is amazing. He's one of my 70's guitar heroes (along with Bill Nelson of BeeBop Deluxe and George Kooymans of Golden Earring)Thanks dude!
just b4 Rush came famous they played Bradford District High School, just north of Toronto, unfortunately I was only about 3 at the time so I never saw them
@fenderred1, sadly, I never did...too bad, too. I used to worship Max Webster, & I still think they were one of the most underrated bands ever. I'd love to get a copy of this show.
Thanks, BDD. I was confident someone would upload some Max if I remained patient. Very cool. Sincerely, a Max fan who actually lives in TOLEDO (as in "April In/sew patches on my black leather jacket and ride easy rider to")... ...We're all here to be reckless, man...
Great post! Saw Kim recently actually, got to speak with him, very humble and insightful fella. I remember Max (and Kim) like this vid, but he's a lot older now, put on a bit of weight, lost a bunch of hair, and and can still melt your damn face off with his guitar.
I saw Kim Mitchell on a local breakfast TV show over 10 yrs ago and when they brought up the Max Webster days he said he can't stand the stuff now and that made me sad.
man those songs have some good playing. Myles doesn't seem to do much in the clips he's in. I hope Kim release a Max DVD with a full concert or two and some clips! It'd be worth the "import!"
yes, tpep, those WERE the days! saw them 5 times, first time at my "high" school, AY Jackson, Toronto, 1974 I guess, with their first drummer, who greeted me in the hallway as i made my way to the john to puke. that was before microbrew, and clean ingredients, eh.
Looks like Kim on guitar, Gary on drums, and Dave Myles (any realtion to Alannah?) on bass. But who's the guy on keys? That doesn't look like Terry Atkinson.
Man, where the hell did you get this? This concert was broadcast live on Q107 or whatever the hell it was, and I, as the most fanatical living Max Webster fan, taped it, and promptly lost the tape. I had no idea there was video! Is there more? Please say yes.
Canada's ultimate party band. Saw them at least 6 times back in the 70's . Loved them
How many aging musicians out there are still blown away by how awesome this song is? Definitely beyond my playing ability!
Back in the '80's I named the family dog "Max Webster" call name Max in honor of this band!!
All of the Max Webster and Kim Mitchell material is vastly under appreciated!
Those were great times.
I wish I could bring my kids back in time for a 70s Concert.
One of the best shows I saw was Max Webster / Starcastle / Rush. On the same bill. Great show. All three bands played great.
PW
holy crap my dad was at that concert. wow, four years before i was born, i never thought in my life i'd ever see max webster on youtube... wow...
I agree, Max is an Icon!!! I've seen him open for Rush at least 15 times, and have never been disappointed. Universal Juveniles...What an album!!!!!
You do know Max Webster is the name of the group, not the singer, don't you?
It was a blast from the past, it was great, just like Max thanks for the real rock n roll
I feel sorry for you if you didn't see Max Webster in the 70's and 80's. I saw them at least 10-15 times either in bars or opening for Rush. GREAT 🇨🇦 party band👍

I agree with you, there are similarities , talent and originality
Just amazing!! Kim’s voice 🙏they were just great
Bigdaddy you're my new best friend long live Max........ty ty for the posts
What a great band.
The first time I saw them, they were opening for RUSH and STARCASTLE at Vetrans Memorial in Columbus, Ohio.
Im like, "Who is this dude bunny hopping around the stage". Anyway, I've been a MAX fan ever since then.
Killer drummer too IMHO.
Who's the tall dude with the guitar eh? 😁😁😁🇨🇦
Some really good simulcasts around that time,City Tv must have some gems in their vault . The artists should petition to release these concerts.man ,brings back good fkn times
Right on, ya i bet they have tonnes of stuff no-body has ever seen!
Who knew the greatest concert ever took place in Barrie. Wow.
Been to SOOOOO many Max concerts, it was terrific to find this! Thank you, thank you!!! Waaa acid flashback! yahew!
It was back in 74 when I immigrate to Canada

Surprisingly good recording considering the age! Wow. Good performance too.

Funny that you mention Zappa, you might be onto something there.
I was at this show in May 1980 and still have my ticket stub! I saw the band several times between '77 and '80. Always a great show. One of my favourite Max Webster shows was when they opened for Brand X and Genesis at the old CNE Stadium in Toronto.

Yeah, Max at the Coronet, been there, done that and loved it.
Awesome treat to catch this clip!

CRANK IT !
Got to see Max on their reunion tour ... but this is very cool.. tks for posting
Oh my God, this takes me back. Wow, I didn't think I'd find any Max here either...what a treat. Saw them many times also (good ol' days). I'd love to see "Oh War" here. Been thinking of that one lately. Thanks, this is great.
Saw this tour in Peterborough, I was 14 and hooked for life!!!
I've never seen Kim Mitchell in concert. And this video proves, I should. ROCK ON!!!
Nice to see someone that posts all Canadian because we have some pretty cool stuff up here.

I was there too. The good old days for sure.
Saw them in London back in the day. Bought albums immediately...

I have been waiting since 1981 to see ANY Max footage and you made me loose my water! Thanks for posting...MORE??????
I saw Max Webter open for Rush 3 times...(shoulda been the other way around!) Kim Mitchell is amazing. He's one of my 70's guitar heroes (along with Bill Nelson of BeeBop Deluxe and George Kooymans of Golden Earring)Thanks dude!
just b4 Rush came famous they played Bradford District High School, just north of Toronto, unfortunately I was only about 3 at the time so I never saw them
I have the whole show on DVD
@fenderred1, sadly, I never did...too bad, too. I used to worship Max Webster, & I still think they were one of the most underrated bands ever. I'd love to get a copy of this show.
Wow,this is so cool,I haven't heard this in years!

Didn't Max Webster open up for Sabbath for a few shows back in 1980?
Yep - January 1981, in the UK.
Its not the wacky clothes that get me--its seeing him with all that hair
Man, Mike Tilka's basslines really added a lot to this song.
They remind me a bit of the poppier Frank Zappa and sometimes the tubes. Saw them live once and thought they rocked!
Kim and Pye..rock on!
Great clip, thanks!
Great post! Saw Kim recently actually, got to speak with him, very humble and insightful fella. I remember Max (and Kim) like this vid, but he's a lot older now, put on a bit of weight, lost a bunch of hair, and and can still melt your damn face off with his guitar.

this is so cool. i used to live in the same house as the keyboard player he tours with now. wicked!
I wish they had put this song on "Live Magnetic Air"
Here among the cats!
'I think you got the wrong band, I don't think we play that song.' LOLOL
Bigdaddydishrags does it again!
I thought all the Wilcox was enough!!
way to go, man!
: )
saw these guys in a high school acting like they were on a world class stage. Good on ya, Max Webster..and esp you, Kim Mitchell, eh?
man those songs have some good playing. Myles doesn't seem to do much in the clips he's in. I hope Kim release a Max DVD with a full concert or two and some clips! It'd be worth the "import!"
Starcastle is back together and signed to Progrockrecords. here's the link to their page. I just wish MW would come back. They were outstanding.
Long live MAX WEBSTER..
Wow! Thanks for the memories, bigdaddydishrags!
From what I’ve read this is from an early radio simulcast/show? Did this show ever become an official live release of Max Webster’s?
awesome! thanks for posting this gem!
Oh Yea!
What was that big cloud floating in the middle of the arena. LOL. :-)
Absolutely killer fucking band.
wild tune i was a kid
yes, tpep, those WERE the days! saw them 5 times, first time at my "high" school, AY Jackson, Toronto, 1974 I guess, with their first drummer, who greeted me in the hallway as i made my way to the john to puke. that was before microbrew, and clean ingredients, eh.
LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!
use dto cover this in the late 90's. its one of my favorites...ok all of them are hehehe
awesome Love it
Cool...with Dave Stone on Keyboards.
So the guy playing in the Jersey with the long hair is Myles?
Can you still get "a million vacations". (the movie). If so, where can you get it?
I' ve been on their last German tour
makes you proud to be canadian
I saw them at what is now Nashville North In Norval. it was called the Way Jay Club then
holy crap he rocks like an animal
Well that is amazing. Is this something you might make available to others?
In any event thank you so much for posting this clip.
Sarnia...was just there a couple of months ago. So Gary plays bass AND drums?
I'm pretty sure that's Gary McCracken on the drums, great musician.
This band should've reached stardom, instead we ended up with bad 80's hair bands
my first "real guitar" was an SG very similar to the one that Kim is playing!
Looks like Kim on guitar, Gary on drums, and Dave Myles (any realtion to Alannah?) on bass. But who's the guy on keys? That doesn't look like Terry Atkinson.
No cigarettes, no patches
another first great snag
Sublime.
thats like very cool
Which albums did he play on and how would you compare him and Tilka?
@BigDaddyDishrags can you upload it to a torrent, provide a link or make it available?
Canada's secret weapon!!
I agree with totally!! Kim Mitchell is almost Canada's answer to the U.S.'s
Frank Zappa
its max opening for Rush , Kim bowo should jam with Rush next friday the
RK40 tour
3:28-ish "Tomato juice...tomato juice."
Lol
Man, where the hell did you get this? This concert was broadcast live on Q107 or whatever the hell it was, and I, as the most fanatical living Max Webster fan, taped it, and promptly lost the tape.
I had no idea there was video! Is there more? Please say yes.
The Max Machine
Absolutely fucking awesome
@rockerrod100 yes Pye was writing with kim back then!
High class tomato juice !
I meant "decals" not patches. South-of-the-border faux pas.
a 70's yawn live, but an interesting front room " light another joint"
newyears eve 1979 ???
High class better thinking it thru
Your on somebody else's PRIVATE CURRENCY of YOU.
Who's there instead of Terry Watkinson? Dave Stone?
Yep
